o4r -> Can anyone tell me is this a Myth? (5/8/2006 4:16:25 PM)

I was foretold.

Long long long time ago, SPWW2 and SPWAW designer are a family.

One day SPWW2 designer decided to modify the code and now they are able to create 999 equipment, unit and formation but ,SPWAW decided to stick to the original 250 equipment, units and formation.

After which SPWW2 left and from one family we became 2.

I knew about SPWAW uses SP3 engine and SPWW2 use SP2 engine.

But, Does anybody know what really happen.

It is nice to able to create 999 equipment, units and formations though......

Not a myth, there was a split due to differences of opinion.
999 slots sounds great, but may be too much IMO, too many things to look at and choose from and alot are the basically the same thing anyway. just named different or given different ammo loadouts.
250 slots may be too low as well..[:D]

IIRC, the initial split was because the SPWW2 crowd wanted to work on OOB's as a priority, and the SPWAW crowd wanted to make the original DOS program work on Windows.
Up till about 10 years ago, all PC's came (basically) with Windows 3.1 AND DOS, (multiple OS's)
With newer versions of Windows emerging, many found SP unable to operate..
Both "sides" knew SP was the greatest thing going, and while one side was working on OOB's (for a then select few grognards), the other "side" was looking far into the future and trying to develop a platform which would give SP to a greater number of people, for a longer time.
The development of SPWW2 onto a Windows capability is both recent, and rather primitive, (compared to SPWAW's interface.)
Both have their strong points, and many of us have both versions on our CPU's........

The split also occurred along developmental lines: Matrix approached the game with a view to improving the combat models, and adding extra features (like the MegaCampaigns), while the Camo Group looked to the graphics and the player options. So, while SPWW2 has more units and improved graphics, SPWAW has the better combat models.

Ok, thank for the feedback.

So, can Matrix like SPWW2 increase the unit, formation and weapon tabular to 999 too.

I know 999 is too much but 250 really is too little.

Can't we expand to somewhere in the middle like 500?

It has been discussed, we can only hope

Well... with the launch of window version of SPWW2, this pretty bring SPWW2 in par with SPWAW now.

Hope Matrix will bring their OOB size up to be in par with SPWW2.

I think alot of us didnt play SPWW2 because it was dos game, and for me I used dosbox to play it as such it dont have that much of problem but now it is no more require to do so.

Is Matrix doing anything?

Wild Bill -> RE: Can anyone tell me is this a Myth? (5/21/2006 7:50:41 PM)

No myth. It is a long and involved story. Most of you were not around the game that long ago. As many of you know, I've been involved with Steel Panthers for over 11 years, since its beginning. That would include the SP, SPII, SPIII, expansion disks for all three, SP2WW2, SPWW2, SPWAW, and even some others.

The differences of opinion were sharp and painful at that time, and created some bad feeling that sad to say still exists in a few. myself was called quite a few things but I have gotten past that.

And no need to dig up stinking old bones with flesh attached.

The end result were two versions of Steel Panthers, both of them with certain appeal and certain qualities that are unique to each. Try them both. Try them all.

This game has survived and flourished even in the midst of newer games that have tried to supersede it. The old Queen of Battle goes on and on. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to to see Steel Panthers maintain itself in a flood of newer titles.

Matrix is ALWAYS doing something, n4r, and there always exists even more being done with SPWAW. Hang on and keep watching. You never know....[;)]

Once again Wild Bill hints at something dark and sinister![:'(]

Call it a hope more than a hint, Fogorin, but gotta keep hope alive!

I tend to think of these games alot like a Chevy and a Ford. There are those who are gonna prefer one or the other just because. They are both still cars and will get the job done for you. Some think SPWAW should be changed to be more like SPWW2 and vice versa as each has unique characteristics. I would say, would you really prefer there only to be 1 type of car to choose from. Steel Panthers forever!

[:D]

Still recall the day back in 95'96 when i first saw SP-I on the shelf of the local computer store. Dream come true. Nice to see the Dream endure and improve with age.
