Going through my assets for the 400th time since I started the game, still not sure exactly what I should be looking for. I have gone through them in fine detail. I must be an imbecile as I don't really understand what I am supposed to doing with said info. Bah....[&:]

The learning curve is kinda steep. Once you accept that, you'll be willing to take a step back and flow with it. First thing, do the tutorial. Do it more than once if that helps. Next, do an 'unofficial' game against the AI. I mean that you will throw the game away after some number of turns, so don't worry about it. You might do this several times, improving the way oyu handle things each time.

You're going to find that things come together a little at a time, so you need a bit of practice. If you try and start with the full campaign you will get very frustrated because of the things you 'forget' to do or don't know to do. Ask specific questions on the forum when you really need help.

Good luck.

after a couple of games like yours, I finally figured out one aspect that I could understand. then I took all the data and compressed it to that one facet of the game and played that with my next game.

for example, I quickly gleaned the importance of having divisions for land combat. I printed out the land units and filter out everything but divisions. I then 'understood' my next game where my divisions should be and why they were important.

after the next game I figured out another aspect and the next game incorporated that and so on and so on... it'll take you probably 4-5 games lasting a month or two to really start to grasp the full scope of the game. you'll get the feel for the enormity of the game, just don't expect it quickly.

get organised![8|][:D]
always play your 1st game as an Allie -unless you have a UV background or are very willing to come unstuck bad 1st time around[:'(]

OK -this works for me

1/SET AN OBJECTIVE
ie -i want to take this place, or I want to hold/defend this place

Now, get the assets
a/ naval air support? -build a CV task force -send it
b/ naval surface support -build if you can several surface groups send it
c/ these need fuel - build a replenishment group -load it with fuel -send it
d/ You need some repair assetts, if available -send em
e/ Now send the troops you need -combat, engineers, base forces, a HQ if possible, AA and artillery -load em, and send em -with escorts!!!
f/ These guys need supplies -build a carge task force -load it and send it!
g/ Some extra fuel will be needed -send some tankers
h/ Now the base needs some air -find a fighter group, a bomber group, and very important, some recon -numbers depend on size and location of the base in question!
i/ ahh, lots of planes -better find another aviation support group -send it
J/ a AS ship and some subs are always useful
K/ minelayers or minesweepers are also very handy
l/ supplies -sure you sent some -better send some more (you will need em[;)])

All done?
OK, thats canton island done, now repeat for the next 50 places "you must hold at any cost"[:'(]

Above all -get organised -and set objectives
ANY UNIT DISPATCHED without a purpose is a wasted unit!

have fun -it will not take long to learn the force -the dark side takes longer!

Hey thanks guys. Really it helps a lot. I am going to try and jump in on the main campaign. If for no other reason than my printed tutorial manual I left in North Carolina. Bah. If i am not getting it by then i may have to take a step back and do it. I guess I am trying too hard to have my first game be perfect. years of playing KP and BiN I guess have pushed me there. Thanks again.

ny59giants -> RE: So here I sit... (5/25/2006 5:53:42 AM)

I did the tutorial first followed by one of the Solomons games as the Allies. It helps to grasp game mechanics through these before being overwhelmed by a full map game. This is the most complex game I have even played (over 30 years doing so). [&o]
Try one of the smaller ones for a while before going big, because your first turn in a full map will be the most important one for some time.

Agreed 100% with this.

There is plenty to learn doing one of the smaller scenarios...and lots of fun to be had too.

Important piece of advise, don't try to control everything at first. I don't mean use computer control - never do that. I mean pick some stuff, experiment with it, run the turn and see what happens. If you don't like the result go back to a save and try again. It is absolutely impossible to learn this game cold off the bat, it takes practice, practice, practice.

Hey thanks guys. Really it helps a lot.

No, it doesn't. Your pain will only increase, not decrease, with experience. This game has a lot of - ummm - "features" that will confuse, bemuse, and abuse you for as long as you choose to play it.

The only advice I have is that the first turn is the big problem (just like the first blank page is the big problem for beginning writers). It takes forever (particularly on the Japanese side) to wade through everything, even in small scenarios. Once you get through it, ensuing turns are quicker to execute, and the game seems much smaller.

WitP is not as big or as complicated as many try to make it seem. There's just a lot of rigmarole to be dealt with, but you get that on track pretty early, and it flows from there.

And here I thought it was a phrase we were supposed to complete...

So here I sit...

...broken hearted
tried to s**t, but only farted.
Later on, I took a chance...
Tried to fart and s**t my pants.

bigmed1204 -> RE: So here I sit... (5/26/2006 4:06:20 AM)

Lol. I was hoping someone would catch that. you win......a picture of louie anderson in the buff. congrats my friend.

Cap Mandrake -> RE: So here I sit... (5/26/2006 7:15:35 AM)

bigmed;

It is imperative to learn (or already know) the ship type abreviations and their purposes

Ditto aircraft nomenclature. You need to know a Brewster is a crappy fighter with good range and a Spitfire is a good fighter with crappy range. Nells are made of balsa wood impregnated with lighter fluid and B-17's are well nigh invincible. You will soon know the Hudson range is 10 hexes and the B-25C is 8. Wirraways are flying coffins..etc etc

Without trying you will memorize the geography, but you do need to study where the high value resource areas are.

I would suggest you start as Allies in the Dutch East Indies scenario vs the AI. If you insist on doing the big show..go as Allies to start..you will be a pale remnant of your former self if you try to do the 1st Jap turn and dont know what you are doing.

One other thing, if an air group starts on a carrier..dont move it...even if the carrier is damaged..it may cause your skin to break out in horrible pustules and the clocks all to run backwards.

That must've been for waterproofing, right? [:D]

bigmed1204 -> RE: So here I sit... (5/26/2006 3:09:13 PM)

I wonder, is there a place where one can download a list/database of fighters ships etc, that tells nationality and such?

JReb -> RE: So here I sit... (5/26/2006 3:19:07 PM)

Try this site. Has lots of downloadable files. Even these files take some studying.

Yes, quite effective to prevent intrusion of water in to the balsa wood...and very effective to inhibit termites. The technique was the winner of the Wright Bros. award for advances in aeronautical engineering for 1935. Tragically, the flaw with the design was not appreciated until early 1942.

Terminus -> RE: So here I sit... (5/26/2006 5:10:45 PM)

Similar to the shipbuilding methods of ancient Rome: bone-dry oak planks, tied together with hemp rope and weatherproofed with tar and bees wax...

KA-WOOMPH!

Good description. I'd say it applies to most of us Japanese fanboys.[:D]

treespider -> RE: So here I sit... (5/26/2006 6:13:51 PM)

My suggestion...Goldilocks and the Three bears...

Don't worry about the big picture....it will take care of itself.

Don't worry about the details...they will take care of themselves.

Worry about completing operations ....Pick an objective,...any objective.
Assign resources to achieve that objective.

After assigning resources to deal with an objective pick another objective...any objective and so on...

If you get to an objective that you can't assign resources to, don't worry about it because if it were important enough you would have picked it sooner...
