Garfieldthecat -> Newbie WiTP question (5/29/2006 4:21:35 AM)

Hello,

First off, wanted to say hello, I've played the old Pacific War (original and Matrix version) off and on, and finally have gotten around to purchasing WiTP to play. I've kept putting it off because of it's complexity, but I just can't resist anymore. [:D] Let me give a big thanks to Matrix for all their work on both games!

I'm reading the manual, and tutorial, and am getting ready to start some small test games to figure out what to do. My question is about all of these mods that I have been seeing on the forum, such as CHS, RHS, nik mod, new maps, etc...

Is there a summary of what these mods do? I realize that they all are attempts to tweak the game into a more realistic historical layout, but any details? I've read through recent forum posts, and gone to several of the fan sites, but there isn't anything that lays out all the mods next to each other.

And, after playing through the tutorials and the like for a while, and I start my first AI "campaign" game of the entire war, should I play the default matrix version, or should I go with one of the above mods for more realism?

Thanks for the help!

I think there is a thread where someone tried to explain all the mods before, but I think at the moment there are two really popular mods that I have personally played, CHS and NikMod.

CHS is an attempt to change the ships and units of the game to truely reflect the actual ships that fought. the original does this to to some extent, but they cut a few corners when it came to exactly how many guns were on some ships, some ships that never were included that should/could have been and the true arrival times of ships. thats where CHS comes in, if you are a fanatic and it erks you that some ship you fancy has eight 14inch guns, instead of the true six 15inch guns, then this is the mod for you. its basically an order of battle change, but no modifications to the actual game engine have been done.

NikMod on the other hand mostly changes the mechanics of the engine to get different results. there are a number of changes, but the biggest thing is the air combat values have been altered. this gives different air combat results than you'll find in the original, typically less bloody. in the original, if you put up 200 fighters on CAP, nothing is going to get through your defenses, but in NikMod some attackers will slip through (as you might expect they would). another big change is the effect the AA fire. in the original, you can group all the japanese AA guns in the game onto a singl;e hex and if the allies attack with heavy bombers a few thousand feet off the ground and they won't shoot a single plane down. in NikMod its danagerous for planes to attack AA defended regions at low altitude.

my advice is to play the original for awhile to get the feel for it and then start trying the others to decide which you like best. also I might advise you to try some of the smaller scenarios first, since you're likely to restart your game frequantly the first few times anyway.

I agree to get a feel of the game first. You are going to restart several times during your learning curve(which is longer than you think). Once you test drive and get a feel then you can decide how to customize. The manual is only to give you an idea of the game mechanics, do not take it as gospel. You will learn quite a bit in the forums.
