Playing Japan against the AI in 1/42. I-169 is on patrol of the southern coast of NG. She spots and escorted AK, but doesn't attack. Her escorts though drop 3 DCs scratching her paint and spilling the captains tea. [:-]

Next day she sails straight into the harbor at PM, surfaces in broad daylight and puts 4 shells and 1 fish in an AK. [:D] The next day she stays in PM harbor despite ASW presence and puts 2 more fish in an AP.

The captain is returning to Truk to rearm and get some more tea.

This is a rhetorical question. How can a sub surface in a port and fire at will (or Tom or Harry)?

Yeah, chalk it up to strange witp engagements. Funny thing is I have my subs on computer control - I figured learning the Japanese production system was a big enough challenge I would let the computer run the subs for the first year.

Niceguy2005;
How is your game against the AI going. I am pkaying allies and am about 10 days in. I am just about ready to restart so I can correct some mistakes such as pay more attention to detail and be careful where you send unescorted transports.

I myself am wondering how it is going. I have played several games now as the allies, so have a good understanding of how the game works, except for those features unique to Japan. I'm almost petrified to touch the Japanese production system, fearing anything I do will throw it completely out of whack.

So far the AI is doing a fantastic job...of running away. Really, its the best Sir Robert impersonation I have ever seen. [8|]

All I can really say is that my goal is total map domination and I have a very long way to go. If all goes well, by the end of 3/42 I will have conquered most of the DEI, Northern China, Burma, Malaya and will be preparing to invade India and the USSR.

Hi!

Was the AK in the harbor or in the hex? "In the harbor" seems unlikely to me, but "in the hex" seems within reason since the hexes are 60 miles across.

Pretty amazing, as I never would have thought the AI would especially send IJN subs into a port. For what little I've played the new version I have seen some coastal hex (one around Taan and another around Hong Kong) allied subs hit 2-3 ships, which I found surprising.

MarcA -> RE: Whoa unto he who messes with I-169 (6/4/2006 10:24:05 AM)

According to the manual a sub can't attack a ship docked at a PT of 3+ so the AK can't have been docked. The allied AI must have kept the AK out of port or maybe the sub got there first and attacked the AK and AP as they arrived.

I have unwittingly implied something that I did not mean to imply, apparently. Mantill I believe is quite right, a ship that is moored can't be attacked. When I said sailed into the harbor, I meant the 60 mile wide hex. Technically for game purposes a ship is either at sea or docked. I choose to see the attack as taking place in the harbor (really very unlikely) but technically it could have happened anywhere.

I find sending a sub into a port a very bold move, in particular PM with a known ASW unit there. I find the AI under version 1.8 to be quite a bit more aggresive. It's making AI games more fun.

In the same game the AI just sailed a 4 cruiser TF (Boise, Leander, Pensecola and one other CL) into the Sulu sea. It very nearly intercepted a transport TF carrying a division of the Emperors finest to Legasapi.

BLUESBOB -> RE: Whoa unto he who messes with I-169 (6/13/2006 8:41:31 PM)

My favorite is the I-124. Every time I've played, that ship has sat off Manila Bay and torpedoed just about everything coming out of the bay. I'll send DD's or MSW's out to try and sink her, but she always manages to escape after sinking a couple of those ships as well. Later she shows up in the Java Sea and continues her rampage. I've made it a special mission to get the I-124 as soon as possible.

Okay, these answers to my rhetorical question (guess it was't so rhetroical after all) make a great deal of sense and tell me I need to pay particular attention to ships' status in port. Thank you.
