KG Erwin -> Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 2:11:52 AM)

I lumped these into themes. These immediately came to mind.

Fantasy/heroism/magic

1. Field of Dreams
2. The Natural
3. Angels in the Outfield

Historical
1. 61*
2. Eight Men Out

Drama/tragedy
1. Bang the Drum Slowly
2. The Rookie

SirWolf1960 -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 2:21:57 AM)

I can't argue with any of your choices, except I'd rate "Eight Men Out" ahead of "61*."

Good list

PadresFan104 -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 2:23:12 AM)

I have 4...

1) The (original) Bad News Bears
"Hey Yankees... you can take your apology and your trophy and shove 'em straight up your ass!"

2) The Rookie
"You know what we get to do today, Brooks? We get to play baseball."

3) A League of Their Own
"Yeah, I'm just going home, grab a shower and shave, give the wife a little pickle-tickle, and I'm on my way."

4) Major League
"Heywood leads the league in most offensive categories, including nose hair. When this guy sneezes, he looks like a party favor."

PadresFan104 -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 2:25:36 AM)

Yikes, how could I forget!!!

Baseball, by Ken Burns. Not exactly a standard movie, but brilliant none-the-less.

Al

OMG, Al, how could I leave out "A League of Their Own" ?  [:o]

"Nobody cries in baseball!"

KG Erwin -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 2:34:18 AM)

As for "Major League" and "The Bad News Bears", I omitted the category of comedy/drama.  Sorry.

Amaroq -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 2:55:56 AM)

Great idea, I think I'll roll one up on 'books'.

DandricSturm -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 2:56:25 AM)

I know it's corny, unscientific, unrealistic and downright cheating, but I've always liked, "It Happens Every Spring," with Ray Milland and a great performance by Paul Douglas as catcher Monk Lanigan.

CBeasley37 -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 3:04:07 AM)

I'll put in a vote for Bull Durham and Cobb ( One of Tommy Lee Jones' best roles ).

A league of their own is still my all time fave.

SwampIrish -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 3:14:11 AM)

No particular genre:

1. 61* (I hate the Yankees, but I like Barry Pepper)
2. The Natural
3. Bull Durham
4. Major League
5. Bad News Bears
6. The Sandlot

This just got a strong endorsement from the Giant's play-by-play and color man during a rain delay in New York on Saturday; I've never seen it.

orton1227 -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 3:32:12 AM)

Bad News Bears. (old one).

The best line in the whole movie was the blonde-headed kid saying that their team is a "bunch of [racial slur], [racial slur], [racial slur] and a booger-eating moron".

KG Erwin -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 3:34:10 AM)

Dang, I'd never heard of  "It Happens Every Spring". I'll ask the library to find it through ILL.

renojedi -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 5:15:28 AM)

Perhaps a little cliche but I still love the Rookie and Field of Dreams. Willie Mays Hayes is still my favorite character from a baseball movie though.

DandricSturm -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/6/2006 1:15:09 PM)

You can look it up on IMDb, or:

Ray Milland plays a college professor who needs to make some money so he can marry his girlfriend. One day a batted baseball flies through the window of his lab and randomly mixes some chemicals in the sink. The resultant liquid turns out to repel wood. Milland as "King" Kelly, gets a tryout with a major league team. Although he has 'nothing' in warmups, no one can touch his chemical treated baseballs because bats repel them. He goes on to enjoy one great season, finally.... Well, I won't give away the end.

Paul Douglas is terrific as Monk.

For those of you who are oldtimers, like myself, here are a couple of classics...

The Kid from Left Field, staring Dan Dailey and Lloyd Bridges

Little Giant, staring Edward G.Robinson

And I have to say, two of the funniest movies I ever saw were Elmer the Great, and Alabi Ike, staring Joe E.Brown.

DandricSturm -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/13/2006 6:40:43 AM)

I was just now listening to last Friday's Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and he had a trivia question about "It Happens Every Spring." I wonder if he reads this board?

DreamTeams -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/13/2006 6:50:18 AM)

1) The Natural
2) Soul of the Game
3) Eight Men Out
4) Ken Burn's Baseball
5) Bingo Longs's Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings
6) *61
7) A League of Their Own

Claymore Cut -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/13/2006 8:06:52 AM)

By far 8 Men Out, followed closely by Major League and Field of Dreams.

Walewander -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/13/2006 1:23:40 PM)

No fans of The Scout?

"If Nebraska pitches the perfect game as expected..."

ED#29 -> RE: Favorite Baseball Movies (6/15/2006 12:44:18 AM)

I'm not an oldtimer, but "Pride of the Yankees" is one of my favorite oldtime baseball movies.  Gary Cooper was excellent in his portrayal of Lou Gehrig.

I also like The Natural, Major League (a great movie for one-liners), The Sandlot and For the Love of the Game w/ Kevin Costner.
