henri511 -> Retreating? (6/12/2006 5:45:11 PM)

Perhaps I missed something, but I find it extremely difficult to retreat (playing the Rommel in Africa scenario - more on that later).[&:] Now I fully realize that a retreating unit is subject to taking damage, but that is not what I mean. What I mean is that after an enemy attack, some of your units will fall into reorganizing, and so become impossible to move. So let's say that you realize that your offensive has petered out and that you need to retreat, how can you do that if the enemy attack that has just convinced you has put a number of your best units into reorganization? For example, in my battle, the 21st Panzers, with a strength of something like 18-21 had somehow been put into reorganization (howdahell the British managed to do that is beyond me...) at the moment I decided that Rommel should hightail it back to Tobruk, but doing so would condemn my best armored unit to encirclement and death. So I have to stick it out for one more move until 21st can move, but on the next move, I take even heavier casualties and a retreat now could be just as bad. [:@] Rommel was an expert at the mobile defense, but how can you carry out a mobile defrense when you lose an important proportion of your force with each retreat? OK, in this particular scenario, I waited too long to retreat, and should have used Rommel's successful idea of using the Italians to delay the British while the Panzers headed back to lick their wounds.[:-] Here is somethig else that I find unclear. It has been suggested that all artillery be put on tactical support at the end of every turn, and it is often necessary to change the mode of many units before and after battles to minimum casualties, limited attack, and so on. Is there a way to do this for more than one stack at a time? If not, following this advice could take the better part of a day to make a single move when many units are involved. Also is there a way to see the mode of units without calling up the unit information screen? Man, I had forgotten how complex this game is! [:'(] Henri
