alfrake -> zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/20/2006 5:57:35 AM)

Due to escorts joining only the second strike, my Zuikaku's squadron of Kates has been reduced to zero aircraft (and 3 surviving pilots). I pulled the Zuikaku into Truk in order to disband some land based Kate units into the carrier squadron. But I cannot do it.

While the screen lists "transfer to base" as an option, and lets me select Truk, nothing happens. My guess is this a coding logic mistake caused by the squadron having zero aircraft. It will not let me get just one aircraft as that option is greyed out (despite Truk having 50k+ supplies). If I turn replacements on, I'm sure it will pull a full unit of Kates. But if I then disband other units (with trained pilots and planes) into that squardon, it will be massively overloaded with planes and presumably stop flight operations. I cannot transfer the new units onto the carrier and then disband.

Any ideas on how to get around this?

PS I just noticed the Hiyo's squadrons have all switched themselves to 4th Fleet. Yet the Junyo's squadrons are still independent. Both carriers were built on the same day (yes, literally) and have never separated from each other. They both spent identical time disbanded at Kwajelein where the bug apparently hit the Hiyo only. How silly. [&:]

have you tried to put the land based plane unit on board your carrier and then disbanding it?...

I think that should make the trick

also, you can always use the "get one plane" button (I think it gets out of the grey if you set reinforcements to allowed), you get ONE kate, put the unit on the ground and then do the disbanding of the land based kate unit....

dtravel -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/20/2006 9:03:54 AM)

If you put the Zuikaku into a TF, then you can transfer a land air unit onto it.  You can then immediately disband the carrier back into Truk.

alfrake -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/21/2006 6:17:51 AM)

I can put the new squadron on the carrier. I cannot disband the new squadron into the old carrier squadron. The get one plane button isn't available on any carrier I have in the game, even when it logically should be, in TF, in port, whatever.

dtravel -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/21/2006 6:23:14 AM)

I have no idea what's going on in your game then, Alfrake.  You need to get an official someone's attention and send them the save game to look at.

I've never been able to disband a unit into a carrier unit while both were on the carrier. You have 2 options. You can transfer the carrier unit to land (which you can't do without planes in it) or turn on replacements and wait a turn to get aircraft into the daitai. The problem there is that you'll fill up the daitai with aircraft in a turn (assuming sufficient planes in the pool).

Are you using 1.801? If so, you should be able to add individual planes. Add a plane or two and then transfer the daitai to Truk. You should be able to disband the other unit into them then.

ny59giants -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/21/2006 8:00:12 PM)

Are the planes CV "capable" or "trained" that you are trying to use from the base??
It may not make sense, but with WitP there are some strange ways to do things. [:D]

jolly_pillager -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/22/2006 3:25:49 AM)

Turn accept replacements "ON"

use the get plane button to get one plane

transfer to Truk

disband land based unit into carrier unit

transfer back to carrier (if it will let you)

turn replacements "OFF"

end turn.

OR

Set replacements "ON"

get enough planes to refill the sqdn

disband a float plane unit at Osaka

use the get pilot button on the Kate sqdn to fill up on named pilots

end turn

BZZZZZZZTTTTT!!!! Please re-read the original post. Get plane button not available.

BZZZZZZZTTTTT!!!! Please re-read the original post. Player specifically wants to control replacement aircraft.

I'm sorry. Both of your answers rely too much on common sense and the way the program actually operates and are therefore disallowed. Thank you for playing War in The Pacific and have a nice day.

jolly_pillager -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/22/2006 9:44:25 PM)

The reason that the Get Plane Button is greyed out is because he has replacements turned off.

If he were to turn this "ON" he would again have the ability to add planes one at a time with the get plane buton. Getting pilots is a different issue, of course...but would not be difficult once he got a plane in the sqdn.

Hmmm. *re-reads original post* Could be. Okay, I take back half a BZZZZZZZTTTTT!!!! (But I'm leaving the rest just on principle. [:'(])

More seriously, yes Alfrake should turn replacements on to see if the get plane button is restored. If so then grab one plane (or three, he has three pilots), turn them back off and do whatever movements/merges he's trying for.

I'm not sure all these gyrations are a good idea in the first place. I understand Alfrake's desire to have good pilots on his carriers but he's flirting with serious bugs moving air units on and off of carriers like this.

jolly_pillager -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/22/2006 11:36:24 PM)

Wouldn't bother me at all if his air groups decided to make up their own TO&E [;)]

Might make up for the Enterprise going down with all hands (including Halsey) after stealth Betties using laser guided torpedoes put 6 fish into her [X(].

Seriously though, carrier down time to replace air crew was a fact of life in WWII...it's the reason that the Zuikaku missed Midway, and it would be moderately unrealistic if he could replace his entire bomber contingent on two carriers a mere 3 days after I killed them all.

OTOH I have the feeling that trained Japanese pilots are becoming a prize commodity by now (early July, '42) and moving them from a ground based sqdn to a carrier doesn't actually make more of them...just makes his ground sqdns less capable, so...<shrug>.

alfrake -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/24/2006 6:32:07 PM)

Turning on replacements does not cause the greyed out "get one airplane" button to activate in this case.

Conceptually, I assigned these squardrons to carrier training months ago. [:)] I'm trying to be smarter than historical and plan for loses in advance.

Kwajelein doesn't need Kates to defend it. Feel free to come visit if you don't believe me. :)

Mike Solli -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/24/2006 6:36:04 PM)

I had a similar problem a couple of turns ago. I had some units at a base that had plenty of supply and the add a plane button was greyed out. I couldn't do anything to get it to work. I finished the turn and sent it to my opponent. When he sent my the turn back, everything worked fine. Have you tried ending the turn and trying again the next turn? Give it a shot. It worked for me.

alfrake -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/24/2006 9:32:34 PM)

I have discovered the magic button!
I rolled the turn over and it didn't seem to help, but I got lucky and figured it out. Well, sort of figured it out. After much trial and error (and saving and reloading) I believe this is accurate:

1. Disband the carrier into the port.
2. Go to the ship screen. Click the Carrier. Click the Air unit on the Carrier. (you MUST access the air unit in this manner, any other way of getting to the air unit doesn't seem to work).
3. There will now be an available option at the bottom "set TF to group location". I have no clue what that means, but after clicking it I can get individual aircraft.

dtravel -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/24/2006 9:48:01 PM)

*mutter* "set TF to group"????  WTF? *mutter*  Alfrake, you've got something really screwy going on with your executable.  It may be time to copy your save games to backup, delete, defrag the drive and re-install.

michaelm75au -> RE: zero aircraft carrier squadron (6/30/2006 2:34:27 AM)

It would appear that the "Get plane" button does not show for ship based groups. Something to do with supply.

It will be corrected, hopefully, in 1.8.0.2, if no-one can think of a "cheat" by using it.[:D]
