Would anybody know how widely the Calliope rocket artillery system was used in WWII?

Don Doom -> RE: T34 Calliope (6/24/2006 3:40:11 PM)

It was used on two platforms the M4 sherman and a towed version[4.5in] Used through out the europe, and possibly in the pacific.

So how "special" was it when it comes to artillery support? How rarely would I expect to encounter it in a WWII campaign in Europe (comparing it to Nebelwerfers and Katyushas, for example)?

Nebelwerfers where petty common when there was ammo for them, that is up to maybe a couple of months into 45. After that not as common.
The Katyushas where uncommon, unless you where german on the eastern front! There are some reports[just rumors] that some captured Kat's where used agaist the third army in late 44 early 45.

4.5 rockets not much in 42 thru 43, but in 44 and 45 as the supply network kicked in, very much common.
Hope that helps. I could dig up some sources if you like. or just google "Calliope rocket artillery".

If the question were "who used them"?, I could say for certain the 3rd Armoured did, and they got anything considered new, or experimental first, including the M 26...
