FlipTrac_511 -> How to achieve Decisive WP Victory in 'Behind Enemy Lines'? (6/24/2006 7:09:19 PM)

I've been playing the 'Behind Enemy Lines' scenario many times as WP and I've yet to achieve a 'Decisive Victory'. Even after textbook encirclement, wiping out the British, securing the objective, and getting a score of NATO 30 - WP 196 (ending turn 20 @ 15 min) I only get a 'Tactical WP Victory'. What am I missing here?

Also in this same scenario, at the start, I am able to drag my units into the objective area...where the British have holed up. Of course, my then surrounded and outnumbered units are immediately decimated by the defending British. I was surprised I was allowed to place units directly into the objective area and literally on top of enemy units. Bug?

FlipTrac,

1. To get a Decisive Victory you need to have a score 180 points better then your foe. In this case you got 166. To be honest it might be really really tough to get to 180. [;)]

2. This is an odd scenario in the fact that the Brit's are surrounded. The setup function in FPG is not build to handle this setup type well. We will need to have a better method in the next game allowing for multiple zones and exclusions to solve this issue. We may be able to adjust the code to prevent a unit being placed within 4-8 squares of an enemy at start. Mines sorta work that way now so I wonder if we have something broken.

Hope this helps. Thanks for the info!!

Thanks for the clarification Cap'n D.  180 points difference for Decisive Victory huh?  Looks like my WP forces will have to take Rasenbach without nary a loss...yah right!

I'm afraid I don't have a save game for that last issue I mentioned.  I've been playing this scenario with slightly differing tactics in hopes of achieving a Decisive Victory, but I may have to settle for a Tactical one.

Of the dozen times I've played the 'Behind Enemy Lines' scenario as WP, the British have never used their Tornado assets...not once.  Just moments ago I played as the British for the first time.  I kept all units within Rasenbach with the exception of a couple of recce units to roam around (turns out they did the most damage finding and engaging rear echelon units).  I held up okay at first but eventually fresh WP units wore me down from the south.  Them Russian tanks were no joke either, but I made 'em bleed for it.  Towards the end they stopped advancing towards the town and good thing too, I only had 2HQ, 1mortar, and 1 armor unit left in it.  I thought I had them beat good.  But when the scenario ended I was surprised to see how many WP units had gathered in the west.  They could've easily wiped me out.  Maybe I gave them the impression that there was a stronger defending force hiding in the heart of the town.  In the end they settled for a Marginal Victory.

FlipTrac,

I fired up a game last night to see what was going on and was engaged by 2 flights of Tornado's in the first turn or so. As for units at the end, in many cases they are units regrouping from a serious beating or as you stated not really sure of assaulting again because of the losses. It is also possible that the game ended with them planning an assault too but caught short by sudden death. Spoils of war.[:D]

Hmmm...I did have EW intensity set to medium, maybe the AI was using all available orders for ground maneuver only?  Still, I made good use of the Tornados when I played as the British under same EW intensity.

Thanks for the follow up sir.

As far as I know, the AI is not effected by the limited staff rule; so they would have as many orders as they want ... were weather conditions keeping them from flying perhaps?

Playing with the scenario editor I have been annoyed at the inability to create two seperate deployment zones myself, I think it would be fun to make a mission where you have one force in a city and have to deploy another one across the map to get there through the enemy to save them. I figgured I'd just have to the reinforcements option to do that, but it's not as nice.

Really???

I do play with weather enabled but I find it unlikely it was the cause. Like I said, I've played this scenario a dozen times as WP and not once were any of my units attacked by aircraft. The one time I played as British I was able to use air assets throughout the game.
