netgeist -> Stopping the Clock, etc (7/1/2006 10:59:53 AM)

I just picked up the game, played a few American rules games, read the PDF manual, and can't seem to find a few things that I suspect are in the game but I am missing.

For example, how do I call a time-out?

How do I do punt / FG fakes?

Onside kicks?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

- netgeist

Calling a time out is done by pressing the 3 key on your keyboard or but third button on your mouse/controller as the players are huddling up after a play.

Fake punts and field goals need plays to be created based off of those formations. I believe that there is a collection of these sorts of plays available to download from http://www.fbmax.com/  I do not know how well these plays work.

BillT -> RE: Stopping the Clock, etc (7/1/2006 11:37:01 PM)

There are no onside kicks as far as I know. As far as fake fg and punts I haven't seen any in any of the playbooks I downloaded from fbmax(does anyone know which one David is referring to?). I did experiment once with a fake fg play once to no avail.
I haven't played the game in the last two months, I'm still waiting on the next update but the last time I tried the game using a fake fg I made from the FG formation it didn't work. I chose the option FG and then chose my fake fg play. It was 4th and 3 at the opponent's 20. Even though we were able to move the ball to the opponent's 10 we didn't get credit for a first down and the opponent was awarded the ball at the 20 1st and 10.

Strange...only one time out per half?

Also, shouldn't I be able to click on a stat column and have it sort my view?

Waiting for the physical manual,

I have fake punts and field goals created for the American rules.  I did not post them to the board or FBMAX because they need modification to work with PDS2.0.  To be fair, the counter plays for the return team need to be created and tested as well.  I hope to have these ready by, or soon after, the next official public release.

The problem with onside kicks is that a kicker will give the ball his full boot unless the game is in arcade mode.  I have experimented with bringing in a special kicker to make the kick, but I am hoping that some onside kick game logic can be put in the game in the future to have a kicker kick the ball a fraction of his normal strength.

David knows that myself and a few other beta guys have created these plays.  As I stated above, my plays were not posted to FBMAX because they will need to be modified for PDS2.0, and I do not have PDS1.0 up on my machine.

We'll have to make sure that is tested.  Thanks for posting your results.

In which mode?  There should be three time outs in each half under American rules.

The stat columns are not sortable at this time as far as I know.

The manual is a PDS file.  It is easily printed.  A nice bound manual with an appendix would be nice though.

Marauder,

I set up a league using the default American rules. When I call a time-out, I am told I have zero remaining for the half....so I am only getting one time-out per half.

I've noticed some other oddities, too. In one game, my QB threw 7 interceptions. That hurt! Also, from a UI standpoint, if you accidentally select a standard play instead of Punt or Field Goal, you can't seem to go back. So, if you've used your time-out already, you're kind of stuck running a play at that point.

Thanks,

Does the little time out bar graphic show one bar or three bars when you start the game?

Sign him up to play in Green Bay! [;)]

There have been some tweaks there since the last public release, so it should not be that bad anymore, but I'm sure the skill attributes will have to be looked at in the future as well.

With that build, just let the play clock run out and select the kick.  As I recall, that is no longer a problem with the last beta build, but I'll check again.

If you see anything else, just post it.  It may already be fixed or on the "to do" list, but it may not.  It helps to have community feedback.

David Winter -> RE: Stopping the Clock, etc (7/4/2006 3:04:31 AM)

The ability to 'back out' to the offense, punt, field goal formation selection will be included in Release 3. It's been in the private BETA's for a 3 or 4 weeks.

The number of interceptions (and fumbles) in a game is something I'm always tweaking. What one person considers too high, another considers normal or too low. Different rule configurations also play a role in how many there are. One game you may have 5 interceptions, then next game you may not see any.

Sometimes one, sometimes three. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. I was very excited about this game the first few times I played it, but between this and the PDS, I am starting to feel my frustration building......

Is there a difference in timeouts between league played games and quick play games? What build are you using? What is the problem you're having with the PDS?

netgeist -> RE: Stopping the Clock, etc (7/4/2006 9:42:26 PM)

David,

This is a league I set up using the default American rules. The problem with the time-outs happens regardless of whether I play the games in league or quick play. Sometimes I get 3 time-outs per half, sometimes. one.

The PDS problem is in another thread. I cannot get motion to work at all.

I am using build v10139

Brockleigh -> RE: Stopping the Clock, etc (7/29/2006 8:10:22 PM)

I've been having a similar issue with Timeouts.

If I play a Quick Game on Canadian Rules, it gives me three T/O's. If it's a league game, just one.

I have a USFL league using US-2 Field, and it gives me just the one T/O in League play. I think if I play a Quick Game, it gives me all three, but I'd have to double check (I'm at work right now). US-2 is a standard College field, if I'm not mistaken, right? So it should be three T/O's.

I do have an Indoor league going as well, and it gives 1 T/O in League and Quick games. I believe that's standard, but correct me if I'm wrong. I don't watch much Arenaball.

... and seeing as we're on the topic of Time Outs, I have been noticing that regarless of game or field types, the Computer Opponent will call Time Outs after a Changes Of Possession when the clock is inside the Half Warning. The clock would be stopping anyways on an Official's Time Out, so the Computer ends up wasting it's T/O.
