spence -> WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/5/2006 10:34:00 PM)

As an American my ship was always personified as a SHE. I vaguely recall Sean Connery as the Russian Captain referring to his sub in "Hunt for Red October" as HE. Since so many other languages are native to the folks who frequent this forum I was wondering just what sex your language would have your ship would be? Or would it just be an it?

Terminus -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/5/2006 10:35:05 PM)

It's a She in Danish, as well... Same thing in German...

In Croatian ship is a "HE" (I think same in all Slavic languages as well)... only you "English" could consider ship a "SHE"... [8D]

I know the Soviets use He, but you already stated that.  I don't know of any others.

Always she in the UK.

pauk -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/5/2006 11:06:09 PM)

that raises the next question:

is there any language where is ship personified as "it"?

I suspect that would be Danish, but.....[;)]

invernomuto -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 12:57:58 AM)

In Italian it depends on ship class:
Subs (sottomarino), always HE. For me it was a bit odd when on this forum you refer to sub as a SHE.
The generic word for ship (nave) is SHE, BUT some classes are HE.
For example, cruiser (incrociatore) and destroyer (cacciatorpediniere) are HE, so you could refer to this ship as HE.
Carrier (portaerei), Battleship (corazzata), always SHE.

Ursa MAior -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 1:02:01 AM)

[sm=Cool-049.gif] There are no sexes in hungarian for items (or even for persons he/she is the same word, only it is different) or for absolutely anything. We dont differentiate between 'male' or 'female' words. So if someone would call his ship 'she/he', that person would be treated as not mentally healthy or at least overpassionate over an object. IIRC it is the same in finnish.

That"s why it is hard for us to learn ANY foreign languages since ours is SOOOOO different from all other spoken languages (neolatin, slavic, germanic etc.).

pauk -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 1:02:44 AM)

So you have two gender, a neutrum (IT) and a non neutrum (HE/SHE)?

John 3rd -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 1:18:36 AM)

I thought that the Germans referred to their warships as HE.  I remember the DAK BIsmarck being referred to as a HE in several books.  Am I wrong there?

How do the Japanese refer their warships?

Interesting. Did a little research on Hungarian. Finnish is the most common other language in your branch. You might find this link interesting. I did: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_languages

AmiralLaurent -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 2:03:40 AM)

In French there is no rule about which word will be female and which will be male (there i no "it").

As for ships, carriers, battleships, cruisers, DD, DE, PC, AO, TK, AP, AK, LST, SS, CS, DM, DMS, MSW will be HE.
PG, PT, barges will be SHE.

You just have to know...

Even more simple. Õ which means a third person (living excluding animals and plants, basically used only referring to persons or maximum for pets or creatures with a soul), ez/az meaning it or this/that (everything not included before). So someone to suppose his ship to have a soul means very-very deep connection. In hungarian What is it? What is this/that? is the same Mi ez/az?
Oh BTW we use is/are only in special cases. LOL. According to the grammar when you speak of something you automatically suppose its existence. Not to mention we 'stick' letters to the root of words instead of putting them in a specil order. IIRC fiaiéi is world recorder word having 5 vowels in a row (it means things which belong things owned by his/her sons). [:D]

Strange language.[;)]

Bombur -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 3:39:01 AM)

In Brazil a ship is He

Zorfwaddle -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 4:27:41 AM)

Strangely enough, the noun for ship in russian (КОРАБЛЬ) is masculine, but has a traditional feminine ending (a soft sign). Another word for ship (СУДНО) is neuter. Go figure...

bradfordkay -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 6:00:55 AM)

Here's the traditional answer...

WHY IS A SHIP CALLED "SHE"?

A ship is called "she" because,

There is always a great deal of bustle around her;

There is usually a gang of men around her;

She has a waist and stays;

Her rigging cost's more than her hull;

It takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good;

It is not the initial expense that breaks you,

It’s the upkeep;

She can be all decked out;

It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly;

And without a man at the helm,

She is absolutely uncontrollable;

She has her topsides, hides her bottom and,

When coming into port,

She always heads for the buoys.

scott64 -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 9:44:15 AM)

it's an it [:'(]

Sardaukar -> RE: WHAT SEX IS YOUR SHIP? (7/6/2006 3:34:05 PM)

Finnish is doesn't have he/she difference either...same language group than Hungarian.

BTW, when Bismarck sailed first time her captain said they should call her male since nothing as powerful cannot be woman... Well, we know how that maiden voyage ended...
