Monter_Trismegistos -> Most effective minefield in game. (7/5/2006 11:33:14 PM)

I always thought that mines are underrepresented in game. Until in another game on second day of war near Palembang two british D-class CLs struck one mine each (one of them instantly sunk) and few days later also AK hit two (sunk), and another AK was damaged by one. Quite effective for a minefield laid by two IJN minelaying submarines... so 5 mines hit from 40 mines total.

What are your records from two categories:
a) number of ships sunk on single mined hex
b) best ratio: mines hit to mines used on single hex

gonna need help from RUPD on this one...but two places in our game come to mine..

Andaman Is. had 99 mines...can't remember what they hit exactly, maybe Tom knows but i believe it was around 2 AP's and 3 DD's

Then there is Rangoon which i dont' remember how many mines i had there...but i did score hits on a DD, CA, and CV in one turn

AmiralLaurent -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 2:05:43 AM)

I had a rather effective minefield off PH repulsing first Allied bombardment TF... but it had 20 000+ mines. AFAIK 1 CA and 1-2 DD were sunk.

Sneer -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 3:31:54 AM)

i had 10k + minefields and no enemyship was hit
it is luck

I'm curious how big minefields were IRL...I recently read on a website about Japanese planning and projected minefields at the start of the war and we're talking somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000-5,000 mines per area...I'll see if I can find the site again.

Found it...from pre-war japanese planning... http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/monos/152/152app01.html

Outline for establishing mine Barriers after the conclusion of the southern operations

Its been admitted by the developers that mines are deliberately scaled back in effectiveness in WiTP because of concerns over their usage in Uncommon Valor.

At Andaman: 4 DDs, a PC, and an AP sunk. One AP still sinking. [:@]

On the plus side the mines were gone by the time I took the base. I guess I managed to hit ALL of the mines during the landing.

All the ships at Rangoon survived but it put a serious dent in my plans.

Sardaukar -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 4:12:53 PM)

I have had bad experiences with my own offensive minefields... Mental note, it's dangerous to amphibiously invade enemy bases you have mined with your subs...[:D][8D]

RUPD3658 -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 4:15:48 PM)

Been there done that. I have hit more of my own mines then Kenny has. [:(]

Sardaukar -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 4:20:28 PM)

Can live with puny VH2 mines or Mk 10s hitting my own ships...but Mk12 etc. are bit different story...

rtrapasso -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 6:12:13 PM)

i've had enemy ships strike a mine when as little as 3 mines are present... however, they seem to avoid the big minefields... [8|] [:D]

treespider -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 6:27:08 PM)

Ahh but what is easier to find and thus avoid - 3 needles in a haystack...or 13,000???

I'd venture if there were 13,000 you would be more likely to notice that they were there and take more care to avoid them....whereas you might not notice the three and thus not take care to avoid them.

Lost 10 ships to VH2 mines so far. The Dutch are a real pain.

Sardaukar -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/6/2006 6:39:12 PM)

Unfortunately for IJN, Mk12 has twice the punch compared to VH2.... at least in CHS. I doubt they changed mine values from original, though. Bigger stuff like Brit Mk XVI (or something) and US Mk 12 can devastate even CA. Fortunately for IJN, only Argonaut can deliver those Mk 12s (among subs, that is).

Well, that's my theory - i've gotten pretty good success out of very small minefields, much better return on investment than the big minefields generally.

One exception was Wake Island - the mines slowed things up so that the CDs did a real number on the invasion fleet.

AmiralLaurent -> RE: Most effective minefield in game. (7/7/2006 1:41:17 AM)

It SEEMS to me that when a transort TF will have MSW included, and if the MSW sweep the last mines of a given field (that is what was laid bya TF once), the flagship of the TF will hit a mine of this field almost every time.

At least it did so in previous versions, or so it seemed to me, and now the MSW also sailed in TF of their own, and losses to mines are less severe IMOO.

So if the above is true, a dozen of small sub-laid minefields will be far more efficient than a 5000-mine single field laid by all ML/DM of one side combined.
