Nomo Ootp -> Future Versions.... (7/7/2006 4:49:33 PM)

I feel that customization is what makes baseball sims great - each of us has our own ideas on our baseball universes. so here are some things I was thinking about for future versions of the game.....

One thing that I think would be great for future versions would be the option to use our own name and origins files. It could be set up as a option in association set up where if checked you then have to have a valid file in place to have the field replace the ones used by the program. I don't think that it would be hard to code - simply use the ingame database if an option is not checked, otherwise build the list from the names/origins files..... To see an example of what I am writing about see the OOTP mod "The Originator" by Dave Williams. I have used this with all my OOTP leagues because I did not like the names distribution within OOTP. I have also created my own namesets and origin files......

Example would be a name file with a firstname and lastname set, another would be locations files. I was thinking about this because I play a lot of regional and foreign leagues and would love to be able to do this easily. I envision a screen where it there is a label that has Player Names Set with the default be set to "Puresim default" but then to have 5 or 6 groups of text boxes with a browse button with selections for FIRST NAME file, LAST Name file, Origin File, WEIGHT. It would be cool to have hispanic names coming from hispanic countries and have it weighted to your liking, or to have players from Japan or other countries with legitimate names and origins. The reason I would like to see 5 or 6 of these groupings would be because I could see a current MLB structure have players from USA (hispanic names and non-hispanic names), Dominican Republic, Japan, Venezuela as being the primary locations. This would only have to be run on new players or all the players in the inaugural draft......

Regards,

Steve

I believe the name probabilities are included in the XML file.

Team and city names.  I think he is referring to player names, and that isn't in the XML.  It would be huge-o if it were.

I asked years ago for a names.txt file that would be referenced and that we could change.  A la FPS Baseball Pro.  And you just weight a certain name like Smith or Cabrera or Cabrera or Cabrera or.... according to the odds you want it to surface as a name.  This was done by repeating the name a series of times in the list.

What, man? And this affects gameplay in what way?

lol - I guess it is for the anal-retentive of us.  Stop buggering me - I am sorting out the universe.  [;)]

I would like to play a German League - all players from Germany with all regions coming from within German states. This is just one example. Another would be not to get so many modern names in historical/fictional leagues that start in the dead ball era. Do I really want to see 5 Terrells in 1901. I have a historical names list that I use, a Wisconsin origin files, Czech, Dutch and German name files that I created along with 30 other locations and names files to use with the originator. Also I just had a league with 3 Mary's and 2 Shirley's in it..... Those I wanted to get rid of.......With custom names files it is easier.....

Realistic names files makes the game more realistic. Does not affect the gameplay at all - but is a nice thing to have for fictional leagues.... One could argue that why do we have historical leagues setup when using REAL player names that are Authentic have to do with the affects on gameplay. The answer to both is REALISM, which is what we are trying to get from our own little fictional or historical league..... You may not want the name sets others may.... One in particular is taken from the Lahman Database and to take all the players that played before 1920 and create a last name and a first name text file. I have done this for another game to create a historical dead ball era name set for my own use.... Names come out with historical accuracy.

I agree that this is something that I would like to see, and I think I brought it up at some point in this forum. [;)]  It's not a gameplay issue and certainly not a priority, but if the coding is not too difficult it would be a help to those of us that run fictional leagues.  The BBPro utility BBNames that allowed the editting of the name text files is the kind of thing we are talking about.

Ok, guys, I understand. Wasn't trying to bust your (base)balls or anything. [;)]

Yeah, I gotta say, can't imagine too many modern-day players with names like Dummy Taylor or Blackie White or Jiggs Donahue or Three-Finger Brown, but in 1901, well, as Lou Reed said, "those were different times" ...[:D]
