okay, i am a newbie, but am loving the heck out of PSBB!!!!i have totally scrapped playing my SOM, although i still like the board game for grudge matches. But, i saw a thread the other day that says it is more realistic to go with the 35 man versus the 70 man (like i have set up). what is the reasoning behind this. any input would be great, there are some real smart cats out there with good advice and tips. i really enjoy reading the forums[:)]

I guess its all just an opinion, but I think the 70 man roster is the best. I'd love to have full minor rosters as well as multiple teams per level. You couldnt give me enough players.

I'd like to hear the argument about 35 man rosters, too.  I am just going on it out of faith in the higher sim powers, but am curious.

if you do a league using real players and you go higher than 35, you run a major risk of having fictional players in your league.  The only way i've figured to get around this is to contract.  For example, if you do a league with 30 teams, contract it back to 28 so you can keep all real players.

makes since, but i really like to fact of having all levels of minors full of players, it makes it so much more fun to watch these players develope. But then again, a few fictional players really don't ruin it for me, so thanks for all the input.  Man i LOVE THIS GAME, maybe i will start a blog on my association, jsut hope my fictional Cubs are better than the real ones.....right?

I'd say the 35 v 70 debate is all about fictional players vs real.

If you want to ensure no fictional players, you need to play with a 35 man roster (or contracted, a great suggestion, rowech).

If you're going all-fictional-players, there can be no doubt, more, with a deep minor league system, provides a rich experience.

However, two things start to happen with very large roster sizes.

First, you start getting "ridiculous" budgets. Quality minor leaguers ask for low-end major-league salaries, even if they're going to be sitting down in AA or A - so you can easily wind up with a total payroll of $250M or more just 'playing naturally'. To allow that, the game gives you huge budgets - $300M is not uncommon, when real ML teams are spending less than $50M on their major-league salaries. (I can't imagine they're spending $200M on the minors...)

Second, combining the two, it becomes too easy to 'player hoard', stockpiling on great young talents. Finances aren't really limiting to you, and with the 70-man roster limit, you can load up your minors with quality youngsters. The unlucky ones, who aren't developing in your system, you can trade away for other quality youngsters.

So, I think the game may actually be *harder* with a smaller roster size, 50 or even 35.

Maybe I havnt played enough seasons with my 70 player roster. But every season leaves me with with very little $$ left over to get anything done. Maybe a couple good players from the Amateur draft, and MAYBE one good FA and my finances are down to a couple mil. I play with the lowest team finances.

Amaroq -> RE: 35 man roster size (7/20/2006 10:18:30 AM)

True enough - I think if you play on the low-end finances, you get a much better experience; if you play middle-to-high finances, its not too much trouble to re-sign the players you want year after year.

So I guess the moral of the story is if you think PS is too easy, and/or you need more challenge, Pick your team with the lowest finances. Seems like it would solve alot of "complaints".

I'm enjoying playing a fictional 12-team association with small-market teams and 35-man rosters.

I only sim games, I sim a week or month at a time, and I'm not interested in meticulously managing the minors.

The 35-man roster, after about 8 years of history, has become a challenge to manage as player salaries have escalated. I try to work on developing one or two young players at a time and get whatever else I need from the free agent market, though because of financial constraints I can't just sign anyone I want. In fact I've reached a point where there are some high-priced players in their lower 30's, with tremendous ratings who are going unsigned completely, and that is fine with me in my association. Too bad for them if they price themselves out of my league.

I'm able to win consistently, but I'm not able to completely dominate the association.

The small association and rosters makes the game sim faster.

I know the way I'm playing isn't for everyone, but maybe it shows the flexibility of the game.

I did have one problem. In the 8th season, the game hung up while one of my teams -- Birmingham -- was thinking. When the same thing happened again I took a look at Birmingham and found they had four injured players and a shortage of pitchers and money and apparently the AI just couldn't sort out the situation. I temporarily took over Birmingham and traded a couple of extra catchers for a couple of weak pitchers and solved the problem. Ironically, that same year Birmingham beat my team in the league playoff.
