Timmeh -> AAR - A World Divided teaser (completed) (7/20/2006 3:55:44 AM)

Welcome to my Axis vrs AI teaser to GG's WaW A World Divided beta test. Some things shown or discussed may change as the guru's are still putting this puppy through its paces so please bear that in mind. Also please post comments/questions in the campanion thread in this forum so we can keep this one lean and easy with all the purdy screenies.

I chose the Axis and decided to play the regular full campaign with total war ( just so its easier and I dont look stooopid but you can play slight varients of the full campaign that are intended to give the AI a little nudge with either the Axis or Allies. And as I'm playing the axis I wont be able to show you the cool effect of the wallies having the choice to square off US vrs Russia should they cause both axis countries to surrender before fall46. but there is still lots to see : )

here is the scenario screen.
Then on to the German summer 39 turn.

Germany summer 39

Germany looks to Poland as the need for cheap new land grows. Germany decideds to abide by the secret 'partition agreement' its signed with Russia and will leave the Baltic States and Eastern Poland to the Russians to keep Russian War Readiness from increasing and with it Russian production[:-]

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:09:57 AM)

After Poland falls Germany decides to annex Denmark aswell, but waits for its ambassador in Yugoslavia to persuade them to like us more[;)] At a cost of 5 supply Germany attempts and is successful in brokering a trade agreement and is assured that (for this turn anyway) Yugo will lean towards the axis and send its resources all to them.

Side note: if you look at the right side you'll see the War Readiness bars for the Wallies, by attacking neutrals and the wallies themselves increases this bar so as to add an element of uncertainty as to when the Wallies will DOW the Axis.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:15:23 AM)

To back up a little I'll show the poland attack and then the yugo screen in the next post, notice that yugo leans axis now instead of balanced so it will no longer split its resource harvest. All for Adolph...All for Adolph[:D]

look at the battle odds screen here and you'll see the germans have achieved a crucial new condition here. Because they have brought elements of tac air, inf armor, and arty and the defender hasn't they achieve 'Combined Arms Bonus' of +3 attack.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:17:05 AM)

heres the only other battle for teh Germans turn one, this also points out that yugo is now gone from balanced to leaning axis.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:30:06 AM)

Germany ends its first phase by regrouping most of its units to address Frenchy and their silly outdated treaty. At this point I also address another new feature, Spys Signal Intelligence and Security. I wont delve too deep into the mechanics but basically it envolves spending supply to increase your chances of stealing technolgy advances that you trail in or revealing FOW with signal intelligence and of course Security to stop the other guys from doing it to you. The Germans spend 15 supply to increase security to 12 ( the Russians send 9 spys at germany to start so it should help reduce any tech thefts)

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:40:24 AM)

Japan summer 39

here is the starting set up for Japan, with the reworking or the naval game ships can now travel 5 move points at a cost of one so for 6 supply i can move my Cag and 3 BB's to punish the Chinese coastline.

[image]local://upfiles/19119/37F39F14852040FFBE152CA17C7AC286.jpg[/image]

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:45:28 AM)

another important battle element to mention now is supression or disruption points. What used to be hit or miss by some attacking units is now resolved with suppression points instead. After an intitial attack by 2 cags and a BB notice the suppression number in the Chinese units that were attacked, this will effect them in later attacks.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:46:41 AM)

and now again after the heavy bomber and another BB unload.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:52:43 AM)

Japan then sends ground units in destroying the 6 militia at a cost of one damaged inf. Japan consolidates a defensive line and ends its move phase. With the limited production Japan starts with I pause several units to start tech upgrades instead, with the tech cap of one point per catagory until 41 its important to my stragegy to start heavy bomber land attack to destroy the Chinese factories and I want to tech subs up a bit to disrupt the wallies reinforcing Australia ( my main mid war objective ) I also que up 3 heavy bombers to reach 5 total.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 4:59:51 AM)

the first turn now over notice how my spys got lucky and stole 1 point of research for heavy bombers, because the spy vrs security roll was successful in that one instance Japan gets a freebie cause she has at least one point invested and was behind who she tried to steal from.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 6:57:33 AM)

Germany fall 39

Notice how Russia has assumed control of Poland and the Baltic States.

I decide against Norway at this point and will wait to attack the low countries next season to split France's defence for a spring attack. Germans redeploy enmasse in W.Germany.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 7:00:19 AM)

Ending the movement phase notice how germany's leaning and pro neutrals send RP's and supply to the cause. Almost all of Germany's forces are poised to strike west.

Germany's production screen, I shore up bombers and tanks for barbarossa.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 7:11:33 AM)

Japan fall 39

also a quick turn, light bombers and cag hit rail but the heavy bomber misses the factory in chunking. Yamamoto moves his CV's north of wake and then some light unit and supply shuffles to finish the phase.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 7:22:59 AM)

so ends the 30's as next turn a new decade will arrive, this shot shows the end turn summary for the wallies. Notice my spies have stolen intelligence data from the Wallies so i will be able to see his spy/security/signals values in the next turn and that will help take some of the guess work out of how much the AI is spending on this aspect of the game and I can react accordingly.

Interesting stuff...keep going...keep going. [8D]

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 8:40:11 AM)

Germany winter 40

As noted last turn the Germans have revealed the Wallies intelligence data. I raise german sigint by 12 supply to 10 to increase my chances of revealing enemy units beyond regular spotting range. I decide to wait until spring to attack France as my inf evasion, armor attack and evasion are all one point away from a tech increase and the frenchies arn't goin anywhere!

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 8:43:58 AM)

again notice the war readiness ( WR ) on the right. my attacks on denmark and poland plus a random point or two a turn have been added. because my spies haven't revealed it I only get an estimate of what the wallies could be but I spied the actual Russian number this turn.

my ambassador in turkey has been recalled! if you noticed the number in brackets by the neutrals, its their volitilaty rating, the higher the number the easier they are swayed. Turkey is a tough nut to crack.

No image for the German end turn but all forces are mobilized in W.Germany for the French invasion next turn.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 8:53:27 AM)

Japan winter 40

Japan starts building 4 subs and deploys its 3 heavy bombers in Japan. With another tech steal my bomber land attack will increase and I'll be able to hit the Chinese factories (which i missed again this turn) I did manage to suppression damage the 2 militia and inf in the last Chinese coastal territory but it took all my air and the 3BB's/ 2 DD's for a total supply cost of 12 to do it. No other Japanese activity to report.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 8:57:38 AM)

another end turn summary, notice the yugo revolt ! one of the random events that can occur if conditions are right. For Yugo its having it leaning or pro axis and its then checked for each turn, too bad for me its happened so early but not as bad for me as for the units there when the germans are done in france!

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 11:12:35 AM)

Germany spring 40

I'm kicking myself for not attacking the low countries last turn as it looks like the AI is getting cocky and has kept a few british troops in france. With a winter attack on the netherlands I might have been in a better position to scare them back to England.

Here is my move into the low countries, and I'll show the new combat results screen in the posts that follow.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 11:17:06 AM)

notice the inf 240 with evasion 5 gets attacked by the stuka, the roll total is divided by the units evasion for a total of 3 suppression points. now follow the unit 240 as it battles in the following pic. I really like the detailed pop up explaining the results.

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 11:18:35 AM)

next i attack into France and suffer the consequences of waiting last turn with heavy arty losses (note: tweaks are in the works to address possible targeting issues with arty)

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 11:26:53 AM)

at the moment vichy is declared the Italians are checked to see if they will join the axis right away ( a 33% chance of happening , wooot for me ) otherwise I would have to wait until turns end and from then on each turn a 75% chance exists that Italy will request to join if they haven't already

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 11:30:02 AM)

I now control the Italian forces, notice the units have little flags to identify them now. how cool is that. almost as cool as some of the unit upgrades changing to newer icons to reflect the tech increase .... wait for it, its coming in a few turns with the german armor [8D]

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 11:35:58 AM)

on the coolness topic I'll back up a bit and explain the stars some units have. units have a chance with combat success to become advanced (silver and +1 to combat) and elite (gold and +2 )

One of my inf that survived france has become elite and I plan on using it to take on Russia by itself, i figure 3 or 4 turns and it should be in moscow [X(] ... [;)]

Timmeh -> RE: AAR - A World Divided teaser (7/20/2006 11:48:20 AM)

with western europe locked down I decide to launch my 3 german and now 2 Italian subs on the wallies. Sub combat has been revamped to give it a much more realistic feel and changes have been made to encourage dispersing them and discourage attacking surface ships in large groups or grouping large numbers together. When a sub lines up to attack a region with a surface ships in it and it targets a surface ship there is a 66% chance it wont engage it at all. if it targets a transport it will always shoot.

subs also are now using the suppression attack for op-fire so mobilty of fleets is increased and it results in a more fluid battle to kill transports. also if a sub is attacked during a turn and survives it is considered 'driven deep' and will not continue to op fire for the remainder of the turn.

the same suppression is used aginst them with cag op fire aswell as the next pic shows, I gained 5 (half way to its damage threshold) so I opted to port it in france rather that give the transport an easy shot at humiliating it [:-]

I'll give some more details on sub combat as it arrises.
