Jim D Burns -> Upgrades question (8/5/2006 7:15:38 PM)

I haven’t played Crown of Glory in quite a while before this latest 1.2.25 patch, so I’m not sure if my following question is misplaced or not. I seem to remember you used to be able to choose what upgrades your nation researched. But in the two short games I played yesterday before they crashed I was never prompted to choose any upgrades.

Has the upgrades rules been changed somehow since the game was first released? I checked the readme and saw it was tweaked for the AI and upgrade checks were moved to the end of turn. But nothing in the manual or readme tells me if I should be choosing them or if they just happen automatically.

Is my memory faulty, were upgrades always chosen for our country automatically by the game?

Thanks for any help,

Jim

You need to acquire sufficient levels of barracks in order to be prompted for an upgrade.  If you open the upgrade report (from the Economic Advisor screen), it will list all the upgrades you have and also the total number of upgrades which you are allowed by your barracks.  If you are allowed more upgrades than you have, then you should be prompted at the beginning of the next season to choose an upgrade.

Jim - playing yesterday I did receive prompt to upgrade in the 1805 campaign, while testing out the CTD issue. As Russia I upgraded a significant number of barracks the first 6 months, and was prompted to upgrade. I think it's working as expected.

Thanks Eric, I am now getting the prompts for upgrades with the beta file you sent me. You may want to look into this with the recent patch as I wasn't getting them as France in the 1792 scenario yesterday. But whatever you've done in the beta seems to have fixed it.

Perhaps same "issue" to me. France 1792.
At the start i have about 4-5 upgrades ( don't remember well now, just waken up [:D] ). I improve barracks and culture so my max upgrades limit grows up but the computer doesn't prompt me: it chooses itself the new upgrades. So my upgrades list grows without i'm taking decision about it. This happened until i reached about 8-9 upgrades. Then the computer started to prompt me. I played only one match with the new patch and only the 1792 scenario.

PS: in detail combat the AI still don't know the meaning of the word "forces grouping and forces concentration". It happens that it attacks my battleline with only 3-4 units at times while it could attack with 8 units in the same time

Players start each scenario with a certain number of upgrades, so what you describe seems to be according to game design.

The AI doesn't actually know the meaning of any words; its function is based on the evaluation of a chain of matrices of data.

Maybe i explained the thing in a bad manner.
France starts with 5/6 upgrades and a max upgrade levels of about 6. So i start to build a lot of barracks and culture. Month after month my max upgrade level grow...but when it reaches 7 or 8 i'm not prompeted too choose the upgrade. Then i watch again the upgrades list and i see that the computer added other upgrades without letting me to choose. The number of upgrades is ever equal to the max upgrades level and this is ok, it works.

Really ? [:D]
Actually it was a words joke, a kind ( i hope ) way to say that AI in detail combat doesn't maneuver its entire army at the same time but launch into attack operations single groups of only 2-4 units for each assault.

I'm seeing the same behavior. Only Austria appears to be able to choose its upgrades in the first few years of the 1792 scenario (I only see reports for it choosing something on the turns pop up report, no other countries are listed until they begin to grow larger, eventually more and more begin to choose for themselves). Only after a year or two (and many new barracks or provinces added) am I finally prompted to choose my own upgrades. This has happened with France, Turkey and Russia for me, all 1792 starts. The AI does choose my upgrades for me during this period though if I am due any.

It is possible to start with more upgrades than you have the barracks to support. This may be causing the behavior you're seeing. I'll check into this and see if maybe this is what is happening; this would explain why it is nation/scenario specific. (I'm surprised no one has reported this before now.)

My response was likewise a kind bit of dry humor.

The AI doesn't like to send its units into "kill zones". Often this works well for the AI, but sometimes it does lead to the AI attacking only in fragments. We've been tweaking the values every patch, but no single set of parameters seems to cover every circumstance adequately. Also, the AI likes to get its units into line formation before closing to attack, and sometimes units don't close to attack because they are trying (and failing) to form lines.

gdpsnake -> RE: Upgrades question (8/11/2006 1:45:45 AM)

One problem I've found:
I am prompted as France to select an upgade.  When I do, the next time I get prompted to do a new upgrade, an older upgrade I had already selected shows up for selection again.  It's like I'm at a max and picking one knocks another previously reasearched one off the list.
Wasn't this bug in the earlier versions and hasn't it been fixed yet either?  I'm finding all the same bugs/hassels in this version game that I had with the released version in this latest patch.  Is it just me?

BUMP,
Any answer on the upgrades dilemma with old upgrades getting relisted?  (Previous post.)
