One of the very few things that I did not like about the original WAW were the (in my view) unrealistically high combat losses or kill ratio. Whereas high number of combat losses may be realistic in some WWII battles, while playing WAW I found a big disproportion between my WAW-battle losses and those losses of real WWII-battles (..in relativ numbers of course). Would it not be a great improvement in WAW (word dev.) if battle results were somewhat more realistic and reflected the outcome of real WWII combat?

I understand what you mean but I think you may be overlooking something. In the real world all units need a constant stream of reinforcements to replace attritional loses. In WaW on the other hand units that are not hit require no replacement. Now, if you want lower battle loses you likely also need to add such attrional loses that needs to be replaced constantly. Otherwise you end up with both sides growing far too large as time passes because the ratio between loses and new units gets wrong. I doubt that would make the game more interesting though.

Excellent point Jan. The replacement factor should be considered somewhere and it is.

I get Your point Jan. Sorry for being so pushy, but I’m still not completely happy. Just one example : Last weekend I played WAW and just before I was about to turn of my notebook (it was late) I decided to launch suicidal attack on the allies. I took an axis force in north africa (tunesia) and attacked an equally large allied force stationed in algeria (both sides infantry with allies being slightly superior in terms of quality). I knew that this attack was bound to fail but I did not expect nine of my units (that’s all I engaged) to be wiped out completely whereas the allies did not lose a single unit. A strong decimation should have been the result but not complete elimination. A replacement system has indeed been implemented in the game. What I like about it is the fact that one can repair damaged units. I think the designers should have put more emphasis on this replacement system rather than having to produce new units every time a unit gets eliminated. It would have made it more realistic. Furthermore I think that the game could be slightly optimised if the designer included more decimation levels for units and that units could be replenished (possibly in the field as opposed to being moved to the production screen – maybe similar to what they did in Strategic Command). On the other hand maybe there is a good reason for keeping the combat and replacement system the way it is….just sharing ideas.

When a unit is 'damaged' in the game, it goes back to the production track and a point of population is added to the nation's pool (representing what is left of the unit). The unit is placed on the track half as far as it were be being built from scratch (so, a damaged Infantry or Fighter unit comes back at the end of the turn and for only 1 additional pop point). This is an abstraction of the difference between 'damaged' and 'destroyed'. The number of 'destroyed' units isnt all that high in actual game play unless you are cut off or the enemy has an overwhelming advantage. As for what happened in your North Africa attack, it could have been a number of things but I'd have to see it to really be able to tell you. Do the WAllies have higher tech than you? Was it just really bad luck on your part?

One of the things that really spoiled the original for me was the huge number of units left in Berlin or Tokyo at the end of the game . Frequently in East Germany by 1945 but have to fight an almost ww1 attritional battle to finish the game { if playing to bitter end} How could all these troops / planes / boats guns etc be supplied without oil or access to materials outside Germany. Is there some why to make units degrade if not ALL supplied . Or damaged units can only come back x number of provinces held { i.e. you hold 4 areas and lost 5 damaged units only 4 could return and the other is lost. As the game stands if you can't cut units off early on then you really need a big technology advantage to win. {and i know historically many armies on both sides were cut of and destroyed etc , but imagine the entire German army / airforce pulling back to Berlin intact . Very Impressive but how would it be supplied with oil / food / parts etc} What can be done ?

There are several changes in the surrender conditions. Now, as long as you have 2 out of the following 3 regions, Austria, Czechoslovakia and East Prussia, you only need to take West Germany or East Germany to force German surrender. This effectively takes away the big stack defense. Realistically, Germany did hold out for about 3/4 of a year after the Allies broke out from Normandy, so it should be possible to hold out for a limited period. Getting the A-bomb allows you to force Japanese surrender without invading the mainland of Japan. You shouldn't see a big stack surviving in the same way in AWD as it might have in WaW.
