Port attach will do nothing to disbanded ships, how can I attach them?

Arkady -> RE: Can I attack ships disbanded in port (8/11/2006 10:14:32 AM)

you must attack with numbers or fly low ;)

cheren -> RE: Can I attack ships disbanded in port (8/11/2006 10:23:07 AM)

what's the meaning of "attack with numbers"? thanks

bradfordkay -> RE: Can I attack ships disbanded in port (8/11/2006 10:28:08 AM)

If you set your bombers to port attack, there is a chance that they will attack any shpping disbanded in port. It is a die roll, not a definite attack. Another die roll determines whether any torpedo carrying aircraft will actually use torpedoes in this attack, failure means that they'll use their best bombs.

The more different air units (not necessarily aircraft) that you assign to the port attack, the greater the chance that some will attack the shipping.

more aircrafts for the attack...as bradford said, there is a chance that ship will be hit

Listen to these guys, man.
Trust me, use enough of the right type of aircraft, and they will tear up any shipping in port!

Thanks to the fantasy ability of 2E aircraft dropping torps in the confines of every harbor and a complete lack of any anti-torpedo defences like torpedo nets. Rubbish.[8|][8D]

Przemcio231 -> RE: Can I attack ships disbanded in port (8/11/2006 3:26:15 PM)

Well but they are easy prey to the AA even in Stock[:D]

I just had Soerabaja attacked by approximately 150 Nells and Bettys and the majority dropped torps. AA was indeed effective (latest CHS) with about thirty 2Es falling but about twenty ships took torps and a few 800kg bombs. I remember asking why this torpedo ability was included and even asked for just one example of 2E bombers using torps against ships IN a port (not a roadstead like Lunga of Guadalcanal) and nobody could find one. Yet, this fantasy ability won over reason and fact and was included. This obviously pro Japanese prop was further exascerbated by the refusal to model torpedo defences, something which existed in every harbor during WW2.[8|] Hmmmmmm....[8D]

Yeah. If they'd reduce the die roll percent for IJN carrying torpedos and for B-17s hitting ships by a factor of 20 this game might actually bear some resemblance to reality. The IJN didn't have that many torpedos to give to the air force, and the B-17 had about the same chance of hitting a ship as I have of hitting a home run off of Pedro Martinez.

Hi,

Port attack can be very effective when you attack in numbers and over a period of time. I lost all the 8 BBs at PH in a stock PBEM game.[:(]

Yes the fact is that B-17's can be leathal to ships. I damaged Zuiho with three of B-17's(2 attacks in a period of 2 days) and later found it on the sunk ships list.[:D]

RevRick -> RE: Can I attack ships disbanded in port (8/11/2006 6:06:11 PM)

Searching back through my memory (already overcrowdedd) the only time I recall reading of a real-life incident of that nature was an IJN DD, I think off of Tassafaronga picking up survivors. The captain didn't even try to move his ship because he was sure that the B-17 would not hit him, but it did, with one 500# bomb. That is strictly from random access biological memory - which means it is heir to all that flesh is heir to, including confusion of ship/date/and time.

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Can I attack ships disbanded in port (8/11/2006 6:27:18 PM)

Too be fair there are a lot more B-17s in the game than irl and the IJN didn't exactly make it a habit of sailing within LBA range.

bradfordkay -> RE: Can I attack ships disbanded in port (8/11/2006 7:20:37 PM)

RevRick, I think that ALL torpedo bombers (allied and japanese) need to be subject to a die roll for carrying a torpedo, not just the IJN. This would go along way towards reducing the slaughter of shipping that we are seeing. As far as 4E bombers are concerned, just play the CHS or RHS and the numbers are vastly reduced...
