A Roman bireme. You can tell by the two rows of oars sticking out the side...[:'(]

Feinder -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 8:59:59 PM)

I rather thot the outhouse on the side was clever...

Capt Cliff -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 9:21:36 PM)

Except for the guy stand on the ways below it! Hope he don't look up![:D]

Mynok -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 9:26:40 PM)

Makes you almost wonder if it is really a lift of some sort rather than a dump....... [:D]

Wait, has anyone actually guessed yet?

bradfordkay -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 9:29:56 PM)

Looking at the sweep of the bow and foredeck, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it's a Yamato or, failing that, a Japanese heavy cruiser...

jrlans -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 9:36:26 PM)

Looks much to small for Yamato. Looks like a CL to me; hard to tell with out gun or a completed superstructre though

Apollo11 -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 10:37:09 PM)

Hi all,

Hmm... this can't be naval combat vessel...

Feinder -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 10:47:26 PM)

According to the rules of the Mystery Ship threads, the ship must

a. Appear on the OB given within stock Scenario 15 of WitP.
b. Not be of type AP, AK, or TK.

She most certainly fits the bill as a "combat vessel".

I know... but look at the ships lines and the superstructure... 99.99% looks civilian to me...

Erm, that's not the rear end of whatever boat that is. I'll go with treespider on this one...

treespider -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 11:09:27 PM)

Actually i was wrong it is Zuiho.

Feinder -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/14/2006 11:11:13 PM)

Shoho = nope.

Of course, Japan was known to convert civilian ships to something more "combat useful". But my pics can come from any time during a ship's carreer.

Why am I giving y'all hints? You guys usually get these in short order. It's only been 2 hours...

See.

Y'all didn't even need any help.

Congrats to Treespider!

The pic is actually the sub tender Takasaki, before her conversion to Zuiho.

509th Bob -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/15/2006 8:14:07 PM)

I'll take your word for it about the Zuiho.  Personally, I thought it looked like the African Queen, on steroids.  I looked and looked for Humphrey Bogart, but didn't see him in the photo.  At least the African Queen sank something! [:'(]

Feinder -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/15/2006 8:19:11 PM)

A good site for pics is...

HazeGray.Org

If you poke around, some of them are are of the the vessels, before they were converted (as Zuiho). Some during fitting out etc.

Enjoy.

Nice one Feinder.

niceguy2005 -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/15/2006 8:23:36 PM)

If you ever find a picture of the PGs, in paticular one of the more unusual ones, being constructed I would love to see it.

Feinder -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/15/2006 8:47:55 PM)

PGs -

Believe me, I've looked.

That famous pic of the B-25 dropping on the "small escort" is the closest that I've seen, where anyone has even attempted to id the vessel. I've seen it labeled as several different subchasers, and as as a PG. But only in ones and twos, and nothing to coorrobberate against.

Nice one Feinder.

It's either an outhouse, or more likely, a trash dump.

Notice the chute that extends down from it. Also notice, on the dry dock floor, a container (ancestor of the dumpster?) can barely be seen in the photo, placed to catch the debris that drops down.

The chute is to remove any "arc" to dropped stuff. (Thrown trash will retain a little lateral momentum, and may miss the dumpster.)

Terminus -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/16/2006 5:47:12 PM)

Roofers use that sort of thing too when working on taller buildings...

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Mystery Ship #39 (8/16/2006 6:09:45 PM)

Infiltrate a few OSHA squads and all IJN production would have collapsed.
