Well, my scenario is pregressing (Sce. 4 - stock game) where I currently have 3 CV's active. By luck and coordination I manage to stuble upon a IJN fleet of 2 BB, some CA's and escorts. Lots of planes took of to blow IJN out of the water - both Dive Bombers and Torpedo bombers.

To my surprise lots of bombs were dropped (hits scored [:)]) - but only one single torpedo. (And I bet it is hard to sink a BB using only bombs - 500 lb and even sometimes 1000 lb just jumps of the skin of a BB).

Why are my torpedo bombers afraid of loading torpedoes?

I can see that they (the torpedo bombers) are flying - but they always carry a bomb load.

What should I look for in the game?

Kindest

What's the range? Almost all the Torpedo bombers in the game will only carry a torpedo to "normal" range. Any farther than that, and they're luggin' bombs.... This is pretty accurate historically as well.

1 or two hexes. Should be able to reach that.

Isn't there a rule that torpedo bombers carry bombs when set to an altitude of 15k or above?

rudbeck47 -> RE: Torpedo-planes not using torpedoes (but bombs) (8/18/2006 11:19:05 AM)

Don't know. What I can see is that they are bombing from 5000 ft. (Even the single torpedo).

Can I set a certain altitude for the torp. bombers to increase the chance of them actually carrying torps.

Iron Duke -> RE: Torpedo-planes not using torpedoes (but bombs) (8/18/2006 12:38:35 PM)

Hi,
I don't think setting the altidute to a certain hight affects the load out of a bomber
Bombers armed with torp's will attack at 200 feet no matter what altidute you set for the sqd/group
bombers will only attack with torp's at normal range , extended range they carry bombs
bombers on port attack will take a die roll to see whether they carry torp's or bombs

Does the game model the fact that after the torpedo bombers poor showing at Midway, the USN air groups routinely carried bombs on their Avengers instead of torpedoes.  I am not sure if torpedoes became the exception to the rule, but according to Morrison carrying bombs was normal during the post Midway period.  He cites the AARs of the Cowpens and the Hornet during the Battle of the Philippine Sea (aka The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot) in June 1944.

IIRC that particularly poor showing was by Devastator torpedo bombers, and the USN switched to Avengers after Midway. Surely they would have figured that said performance was mostly due to the aircraft model, not the loadout.

Knavey -> RE: Torpedo-planes not using torpedoes (but bombs) (8/18/2006 7:11:13 PM)

I think we all know that hindsight is 20/20. At the time though, it seems that Morrison was saying that they believed the way to sink CVs was to use bombs due to the results from Midway. It looks like he is making a point that during the Marianas Turkey shoot, IF the Avengers would have been carrying torpedoes instead of bombs, they would have sank several of the capital ships that were instead only damaged due to the bombs. It seems to me that after the Turkey Shoot, the doctrine changed once again when they were going after capital ships due to the number of torpedo hits you see on the Musashi and Yamato during their sinkings.

A brief search shows that at the during the battle only the Hiyo was hit by torpedos from the Belleau Woods Avengers. The Zui, Junyo, Haruna and Chidoya were hit by bombs from the USN aircraft. They also mention some oilers taking hits, but I could not find if they were torpedos or bombs.

Jakerson -> RE: Torpedo-planes not using torpedoes (but bombs) (8/20/2006 5:42:17 AM)

It is standard procedure use armor piercing bombs in torpedo bombers when doing very long range attack.

Also Dive bombers should have smaller bomb load at extended range attacks than normal range but im not sure if this is simulated in the game.

Jakerson -> RE: Torpedo-planes not using torpedoes (but bombs) (8/20/2006 5:45:08 AM)

btw. Bombs are more dangerous to carrier type of ships than torpedoes at least historically even a one bomb hitting at fly deck could cause massive detonation among fuelled and armed planes and sink carrier when torpedo had not that chance and torpedo is more easily avoided by evaiding moves.

Feinder -> RE: Torpedo-planes not using torpedoes (but bombs) (8/20/2006 7:18:04 AM)

Yes, when a torpedo punches a big hole in the side of your ship, it tends to cause flooding, which tends to induce a nasty list. Even if your flight deck is pristine, a list keep you from conducting flight ops. [;)]

Come to think on it, "Does anybody know the maximum list you could realistically conduct flight ops with?" I would think it wasn't much, but I really have no idea.

This is something I experienced also. Below you see that jwilkerson, a moderator, says this is a known bug... Bummer.

Has anyone run into problems like this with Torpedoes? Is this a synching issue or something else? I don't think I've ever had this happen B4...

So every bomb hit and every torpedo missed - this can't be right - can it? A bad lot of torpedoes? What's really weird is that these planes almost never launch torpedoes on a port attack - it seems like only an 1/8th of torpedo capable planes ever carry torpedoes on a port attack. I wonder why?

This is fixed in the next patch, part of a continuing saga.

The first problem was Betty's dropped Torps at 15,000 feet ..

The next problem was Betty's torpedoing airbases

But testing indicates these are fixed in the next patch.

Different issue. And this was partially addressed in 1.801 and will be again in 1.802.
