TOCarroll -> HQ Support Squads? (8/19/2006 4:19:31 AM)

What are HQ support squads? I looked in the manual, but cant decide if they are the organic artillery, infantry, trucks and what not assigned to the HQ unit, or the "Supply Thingie" that extends radius from the supply head (or source). You know, the circle that half black and half white, and actually quite usefull in telling you what group it helps; black and white on green or white and black on green. [8|]. Or are these squads something else entirely?

I'm am really not trying to sound stupid (but what DO you expect with a Homer Simpson avatar?), but I'd like to know if HQ support squads are actual physical units, or equipment attached directly (and internally) to the HQ itself (e.g. if The HQ takes losses, the penalty taks effect, vs if this unit related to this HQ is eliminated, the penalty accrues.

Many thanks, oh all wise ones. [&o][&o][&o]

They represent the logistical assets of a formation. The more you have, the higher your formation's supply distribution efficency will be (up to 100%). So the more support squads that an HQ losses, the lower the formation's resupply rate will be (down to a minimum of 50%).

If I understand your question, I think you are missing something on the most basic level. They are a type of equipment assigned, just as any other, to a unit. When assigned to an HQ, they determine the formation supply efficiency, based on a scale formula used by the engine. The number of support squads that are in the HQ is input in the scale formula to derive the net supply efficiency for the formation. Thus, if some of those squads are lost due to combat, pestilence, or movement stragglers, then the supply efficiency drops proportionally within the range of values from 50% to 100% of the nominal supply efficiency determined by the full compliment of support squads assigned to the HQ.

In the scenario editor, they are found along with the Infantry type equipment, like Rifle Squads, Engineer Squads, et cetera.

Thank you very much. I am working on a scenario, but most of all, learning how much I DONT know about the game's internal workings.[:(] I gotta say, the mechanics are even more elegant that I thought! [:)] And I have been playing this game since 1999. (Well playing TAOW1 WOTY & 2). Since Matrix got hold of it, Elmer has got a LOT more smarts. Definitely worth the price of admission. [:'(]

It's all a learning process. Good to see bright, inquisitive minds getting into scenario design.

On the whole I like to keep my HQs stripped down unless they're likely to get thrown into action out of desperation; support squads, command groups and trucks where appropriate.

What if you have a Soviet infantry division, say, in FITE. Do support squads have any effect?

Support squads have no special effect except in HQ units. They can of course still fight in other units, and also draw replacements away from the HQs where they are needed.

It seems that the number of support squads are automatically adjusted, anyone knows how its done? I guess its dependent on the HQ and scenario size, any other factors?

It depends on the formation supply level. If you say change from 100% to 75% the number of squads will be reduced accordingly.

Ahh yes, forgot that, thanks Erik [;)]
