Sorry folks but I have just GOT TO turn this into something useful.

1.  I am playing the Campaign game starting with Aug 42 and here I am in LA with 140+ AKs.  Which is more efficient, loading and moving an 80 ship TF or 10 TFs at 8ea or 80 TFs?

2.  What about unloading at a size 5 port using these 3 styles of TFs?  I am guessing that the game mechanics will treat the separate TFs differently that if I was unloading the 1 giant TF.

3.  If I understand the way loading works, I cannot load three LCUs onto 2 ships even if the ships have the load capacity.  I think that is what the error message is trying to tell me.  Any comments?

4.  Port Moresby is getting hammered from Lae.  I don’t mind so much, I am winning the attrition battle.  I moved up a P-39 squadron from OZ to help, resulting in two squadrons in the base.  A turn or two later, the original squadron disappeared leaving just the one I transferred form OZ.  Did all of the planes get shot down in the first squad, causing it to disband?

Before I sigh off, one last comment.  Because I don’t know RaverDave or Ron I will just have to be generically rude to them.  Carl gave me permission.[:D]

The two of you may consider yourselves insulted.  No to badly insulted though.  I don’t want to get a reputation for being nasty.  And I am not that clever.

I hope someone reads this and answers . . . .

And Ron seems to thrive on insults too.

Don't try to insult Terminus - He is very clever and if all else fails he starts typing in Danish...

From LA to PH, your're probably fine at moving in the large TF. A lot less clicking.
The reason you would use the smaller (or individual TFs), is that the targeting routines will either ignore, or send large-ish attacks vs. the single-ship TFs. Example, escaping Manilla. A bunch of single AK TFs will more likely to be ignored, or if they are attacked, you'd get 20 bombers against a single ship (which would kill it, but it's better than 20 bombers vs. a TF of 5 ships, where you'll likely lose all of them as well).

Ships unload individually. 20 ships unloading in on TF, is the same as 20 ships unloading in 20 TFs. You unload at a rate of (Port Size * 100) + 400 per day (or 12 hours, can't remember) for each ship.

True. A ship may only carry all or pieces of just one LCU or air unit, plus supplies.

Was the original sqdn a "fragment" (meaning "24 FS/2")? If it was a fragment, it will try to rejoin the parent (the "24 FS").

1.Are you kidding - 80 TFs??? even a micromanagment freak like me wouldn't do that. I would say that it depends on circumstances. If you loading unit into ships it is better to have more ships:

- you will loose less troops if your ship is torpedoed with sub (since less troops is loaded on single ship)
- you will have benefit of loading/unloading troops in one turns (IIRC if you want to load/unload troops in one turn you must have at least 2x capacity in the TF but also must have lots of ships - sorry dont have formula for that)

if you moving fuel, supply to the frontlines than 10-15 AKs in one TF seems ok to me... you don't want to found yourself in situation that 2 inf divisions which are desperatly needed on frontlines arrives on West Coast and just realise that all of your AKs are in Australia or somewhere....

3. yes you are right - you can load only 2 LCU on 2 ship, 3 LCU on three ship etc....

4. not an expert for Allies but i suggest that you check in the Air units screen if this dissapeared unit is still on the map and then try to locate it. If not, then you are in problems....

OH, Feinder "smart ass"[;)] was faster than me... and more informative

I think that Pauk has hit on an important concept here. If you use huge convoys, your ability to switch gears on the fly is greatly reduced. My supply convoys are generally between 5 and 15 ships. Invasion convoys can be much larger, using the "bring so many ships that the troops load/unload in one day" theory.
