btaft -> PM defense strategy (8/28/2006 5:57:30 PM)

I am relatively new to the game but I just started a new sc17 and have tried to work up a strategy to keep my CAP from constantly being butchered in the early going and to keep PM supplied. Just interested in some feedback

1) Only fly CAP to protect supply ships coming into or leaving port. Keep grounded and rested at other times (bomb damage seems to be small compared to being gutted by the Zeros
2) Heavily mine and sub patrol PM to protect against bombardment missions
3) Move several AA groups to PM to provide defense in lieu of CAP
4) Allow operational/flak losses to eat up IJN bombers (An assult by 70 zeros and 5 Bettys is not something to be terribly worried about)
5) Heavily mine and sub patrol GG as well
6) Use LBA for Naval attack to pick off damaged bombabrdment ships and transport fleets

Any feedback is appreciated

You might want to try and station some costal batteries at GG and PM, they would fire at bombardment fleet. The IJN is bound to combine their bombardment fleet with minesweeper,so that they would/could clear your minefield, thus causing great damage to your airfield/port.

Thanks!

I had forgotten about those.

I will have to move those before the AA groups

Try too fly your cap higher than your enemies if the
aircraft will allow it.
Rotate your aircrews constantly, every few turns untill
they are well trained above 60+% exp.
don't fly them in thunderstorms especially if fatiuged.
You can fly in troops with transports too Gilli Gilli and P.M.
and also use fast transport with DD task forces too supply and
reinforce the bases..
You can hold the bases against the AI but if a determined apponant in PBEM
wants the base then no matter what you do you can't hold it, but I used too
reinforce it too slow the apponant down...
Try too bomb the airbases that the apponant is flying from so that you can
cause him op losses also..

Against the AI, the first thing to do is to load up 2 brigades + HQ of the 7th australian div and ship it to PM ASAP, give the transports a couple of MSW as escorts (AND air transport, with C-47:s, the New Guinea brd from Cairns + some supply, to Buna to prevent jap capture of that base). Then use Lexington and Yorktown as sneak raiders against jap ap:s and bombardmentgroups, avoiding jap cv:s until better cv-fighters are avalible. If you have the opportunity, use Lexingtons or Yorktown figthers as LR-cap over PM to help the LBA, and get some experience.

Hardegen,

Some pretty good advice. I was finally able to get something to work for me that I was happy with:

1) load 7th div on APs and marshalled it offshore
2) Make IJN pay a heavy price on the APs attempting to take GG with CV task force. You will still lose GG but you will take it back soon.
3) Keep clear of the IJN CV TF and wait for it to return to base, once this happens use your CV TF for air cover on the transports and unload the 7th div at GG and retake
4) Build up the airfield at GG to size 2 and base the A-24 squadron + CAP fighters there.

I think the best possible way to defend PM from the bombardment patrols is to have LBA at GG.

Lopo -> RE: PM defense strategy (12/19/2006 2:25:53 PM)

Btaft,

About PM defense strategy my opinion is: why hold up PM and lose troops, planes and ships?
If your Japanese oponent want to take this base, he will take it... and GG too keepin USN from having air support.
Reinforcing PM in order to slow down IJA is a mistake (in my opinion) against a good player. In early July IJA can attack overland PM with enough fire power to take it in two days despite air strikes and 7th Div. opposition... And during '42 USN CVTF can do nothing against IJN CVTF composed by 10 CVs and CVLs. Troops and planes in PM can be easily cut off from their supply bases by naval action and then these precious forces would be out and lack for Australia's defense.
Lose PM isn't so important in the beginning of campaign (scenario 17 and 19) because USN must survive keeping open ports like Noumea, Brisbane, Townsville and Luganville (the last two are less important but can autorise Japanes auto-victory, LG is more realistic than TV).
In conclusion, hold up PM isn't for me a real concern and when I play USN I evacuate this base because I consider that my opponent wouln't attack me with insufficient forces... That is what I learnt hard way by playing against veterans...

Take care

Lopo is right. Put up a fight for it by all means, LBA and subs can take a toll on his invasion fleets..........but any competent player will take it sooner or later (I once managed to lose it before the end of May 42 in one game!) Any additional ground units sent there by the Allies will die....best to keep them in Aus for defence until your strength has built up to go on the offensive.

Once he has PM it makes a good training target for USN medium and heavy bombers. He will soon find it difficult to keep in supply. When playing as the IJN I usually take it as quicly as possible but then leave only perhaps one division in place to defend it. Do not station any fighter units there as once the airfield is closed it usually stays closed as lack of supply halts any repair operations[:-] Better to LRCAP PM from Buna or Gili-Gili.

tocaff -> RE: PM defense strategy (12/20/2006 2:20:13 PM)

I try to get as much as I can out of PM while suffering as little in loses as possible.  This means that if AC are the only "safe" way out I'll use it and leave the Kanga force there along with whatever won't fit in the planes along with those final damaged AC.  Later my LBA will make PM and/or GG a living hell for the Japanese and keeping those bases in supply will become more and more difficult as '43 and the Allied atacks begin.  Remember that the bottom line in the Pacific War was something that the Japanese never had a chance or winning, called attrition.  Whatever the Japanese take in '42 the Allies should recover in '43 and more, not to mention the Japanese loses in shipping, planes and LCUs.  Survive the first 6 months as the Allied player while minimizing your loses and then get aggressive is the name of the game.  The only thing thing the Allied player needs to decide during the first 6 to 7 months of the game is how aggressive or passive the defense will be.

Marc gto -> RE: PM defense strategy (12/24/2006 6:41:44 PM)

i agree with abandoning pm...almost impossible to hold and sure is hard on your transports..evac what you can and use it to train lba..
