KG Erwin -> Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/4/2006 1:05:53 AM)

I suppose this is an age test, of sorts. I recall that in the mid to late 60s, Avalon Hill placed a few ads in certain Marvel comics -- I believe that's how I was introduced to the world of board wargames as a ten-year-old kid in 1967.

What's even weirder is that I also recall a few ads for Mothers of Invention LPs in Marvel comics. Didn't realize how subversive the comic book world really was back in 1967-68.
Anyone else of my generation remember this?

Of course, my parents unknowingly contributed to my twisted imagination -- in 1967, for birthday/Christmas presents, they bought me copies of AH's "Stalingrad" (my first-ever wargame), The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" LP, AND a cheap acoustic guitar.

Those three items changed my life.

I remember the cheesy little 2-D plastic Civil War Soldiers that they sold in the comic books. My big brother had several sets of them. I think there was a WWII set too, but was in green plastic instead of blue and gray.

Of course, they were also selling "Sea Monkeys" (brine shrimp) back then too.

Ah, the good ole' days, eh? When $1 would buy you all this wonderful stuff! And the comic was only a dime too!

Sarge -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/4/2006 7:52:04 AM)

good ole' days

Saturday afternoon I would jump on my 5 speed Apple Crate and pedal down to 7-11 and spend my weeks earnings ,

1 slurped (pre-Big Gulp days),

1 pack of Topps baseball cards (remember the gum hehe) ,

And once a month the new Sgt. Rock would hit the stand.

Now who didn’t want a pair of these [sm=terms.gif]

Not an ad, but a great photo: I still have my original 1967 copy of this game -- this is what you got -- ahistorical, but a classic slugging match, with the Germans having stacks of 8-8-6 and 7-7-6 Panzer corps along with 4-4-4 infantry corps for "soak-off" purposes facing Russian 4-6-4 infantry corps and the dreaded 6-9-6 and 7-10-4 units.

LOL, I had these. They were once part of a "comic" called "Yps" here in Germany.

These days I feed my fish with them once in a while [:D]

rhondabrwn -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/4/2006 9:13:36 PM)

Thanks!

andym -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/5/2006 12:47:41 AM)

ShermanM4 -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/5/2006 9:11:27 AM)

1. A one year supply of growth food.
2. Living Plasma
3. Water Purifier
4. A magnificent, fully illustrated manual of Sea-monkey care, raising, training, and breeding.........

[:D][:)][:D]

Dare I ask what the living Plasma was?

Caricatures show not intended to depict Artemia satina then how do you train them?

Shucks they could make a game out of this for Xbox i'd buy it! [;)]

Anyone see the Southpark episode about this? The scene where Cartman asks the old wino in an alley if he knows where he can get some "sea-men" and the old guy tells him.... [X(]

Well...this is a family site. [;)]

Cheers, Neilster

rhondabrwn -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/6/2006 5:17:06 AM)

Did anyone ever buy one of those "seven foot subs"?

I always wondered just how tacky they really were. [:D]

Zap -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/6/2006 5:49:50 AM)

I love the prices!!!!

MikeToth -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/6/2006 6:04:59 AM)

Oh man... my brother and I did have that sub....... we saved our grass cutting money to buy it. It was made of a kind of Masonite type of stuff. We put it in our pool and got in, but it absorbed the water and disintegrated. My dad was not a happy camper when it came apart , as thousands of pieces of the material clogged the filter and he made us drain the pool and clean it.

But we did save like $650,000,000 if we would have went out and bought the real thing. So I guess we got our money's worth out of it... for like 7 minutes....

Ah memories.... these photos are classic.... thanks for jogging the memory bank...

Zap -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/6/2006 6:29:30 AM)

Thanks for sharing that experience Mike, funny[:D]

LoL,buy Harpoon3 and you can control the whole fleet for all you want.[:D]
And so guess there's no refund for the sub?[8|]

rhondabrwn -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/7/2006 6:00:36 AM)

I seem to recall that they had a "space ship" version of the sub too.

Did anyone buy that one and try to fly it off the roof? [:D][:D][:D]

So what were those supposedly large vehicles, cardboard boxes? Was there anything that actually worked? I sure wanted the submarine. I think the rocket is a surplus ME163.

rhondabrwn -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/8/2006 5:48:08 AM)

Thanks Sarge... what a wonderful trip down memory lane!

Zap -> RE: Comic Book Ads for Wargames (9/10/2006 9:42:49 AM)

Sarge,

Just imagine you had one of those completely intact, with the original box. It might be worth some money.

Well, I'd pay $5 just for the chance to actually see what they really looked like!

Ooh... I just remembered another one... there was this ad for a "flying" Boeing 707. Very vividly described, but it was paper, came in a tube, and you tied a string on the wing and twirled it around your head. I actually had one of these. It was great fun... till the wing ripped out of the fuselage. [:D]

I had those dudes, they were flat and skinny.

I also got the battle of 1812 soldiers, blue and red. They were "rounded" but man, they were small.
