Quit blubbering... 14 sys damage is a week or two in the yards...

Uh, I'd say a month. I usually figure on 1 point every other day for capital ships.

I get about 1 point a week for BBs. One point every other day on carriers would be superb!

That would probably be it. That is about the right amount of system damage from an upgrade.

Nowhere near. For the Lexington with a Durability of about 120 (IIRC) upgrade damage should be around 2 to 4 points of SYS. The only ships that should be receiving 14 points of damage from an upgrade are those with a DUR of 15 or less. Plus upgrades require the ship to be disbanded, they aren't triggered for ships in TFs.

My guess would be she got torpedoed by a Japanese sub.

Yes, the sys damage is much too high for a typical upgrade. However, that does raise a question for me. Is upgrade damage consistent or variable depending upon what is upgraded?

The only way to get to that level of sys damage in one turn though is through combat damage.

From my testing and tracking, SYS damage from an upgrade is 225 divided by the ship's Durability, then plus or minus one point. That may not be the exact formula used in the code but I have yet to see an instance that is outside that range, so I consider it good enough for our purposes.

As for what did cause the damage, I don't know. No offense intended Yava, but either you missed something or you've discovered a completely new bug. Given how many turns have been played and how *ahem* "finicky" some of us are [:'(] a whole new type of bug seems unlikely.

niceguy2005 -> RE: Simple Question about Sys Dmg? (9/6/2006 7:14:09 PM)

Who's finicky? There's no one finicky here. Right Ron?

saj42 -> RE: Simple Question about Sys Dmg? (9/10/2006 8:37:32 PM)

If it was a mine or torpedo you would have Flotation damage as well - so IMHO its not those.

I reckon you got hit by rule 6.1.25.5 - Operational Damage (but a critcal hit)

I've had a DD escorting a convoy taking the long route to Oz suddenly acquire 30 Sys Dam - most annoying

You can get a critical hit from operational sys damage??!! [X(]

You know that in the real war tens of ships were sunk by operationnal damage, from storms to friendly fire passing by ramming, explosion and fires...

But I think the real explanation is the following:

Lex Captain arriving on the bridge and telling the duty officer the High Command will send them on a raid in some days.
_ Sir, you really mean raiding a Japanese base in January 1942, without waiting for any upgrade ?
_ Yes, that is what is planned. Against Zeroes, Betties and 6 Japanese CV cruising somewhere...
_ And what do you think of that, Sir ?
_ I think it would be a pity if we had a fire in an engine room tonight, we will miss our first suicide mission.
_ I see your point, Sir, I will give the engine a special inspection tonight.
... later in the night, someone apparently set fire to an engine room using old Japanese newspapers published in Hawaii. Strange, isn't it ?

I like AmiralLaurent's explanation.  [:D]  If it is a "operational critical hit", this is the first time anyone has reported it.  Somehow I don't think that's it.  Either the OP missed something or he's found a new bug.  Either way, someone who knows what to look for needs to look at his save game if we're going to get an answer.

Dino -> RE: Simple Question about Sys Dmg? (9/11/2006 7:38:37 PM)

I remember having a WTF situation like this recently...An AK that just sailed into Seattle had 40+ SYS damage for no apparent reason.

Well, since it was just an AK and Seattle shipyards had no pressing engagement, I didn't give it a second thought, but now it seams it might be worth while looking into.

I have the saves and will check them when I get home.

EDIT: False alarm...Sorry.

True Story:
Back in the early 80s I worked at the Long Beach Shipyard when the New Jersey was being brought back "online". The reduction gear housings have covers used for inspection. When I was in the engine room I noticed that the covers were padlocked. The story is that someone in the crew put crap in the inspection holes to strip the reduction gearing and force an emergency trip to port. This was during the Vietnam war, the last time the "Big J" had been commisioned.

Oh well.

Has any BB in the game ever exploded while in port like the Mutsu did?

Only when I put enough torps and 800 kg bombs into them. [:D]
