Summary of Operations 2/5/43 Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 101 days. North Pacific: Jap surface TF appears at Attu Island - took on a small PT-boat flotilla (one PT sunk, the others departed without firing a torpedo), then bombarded. Light casualties to U.S. LCU's on Attu, no significant damage to base facilities. Though compared to early and mid-1942 in the South Pacific, I actually have the means to defend the Aleutians against a Japanese move. I have no objection to Pillager sailing into an "Arctic Midway" - let the game come to you, then play it. Repair of base facilities continue in Adak - port damage still 44, airfield service damage 13, runway damage 0. Once this is repaired, Adak is again fully operational as a base. Transport convoys have departed the U.S. for the Aleutians with whatever LCU reinforcements, supply, and fuel that can reach their destinations before 3/1/43. Also allowing time for these transports to get out of the area. If Pillager is coming, I want the decks cleared. Central Pacific: U.S. submarines reporting Jap air patrols quiet near Kwajalein, light air patrols around Pago Pago and Canton Is. Several sites are being considered for activating an advanced base for U.S. carrier ops - locations considered are looking at the possiblilty of an "Arctic Midway" in mind without over-committing to the North Pacific. U.S. carrier TF's remain at Pearl Harbor refitting as many escort ships as can be done within the next 7-10 days. Refits on CV's and larger escorts (BB's, cruisers) are being held off until the 4/43 upgrade. Refit activity being done with the possibility of combat activity in late Feb or sometime in March '43. Short term planning is emphasizing a possible "Arctic Midway" sometime in 3/43. Sigint report of 2/5 includes entry indicating Jap 6 Naval Construction Bn located on Marcus Is. 6 Naval Const Bn was transferred to Marcus from Takao. Jap recon flight over Penhryn. Summary of Operations 2/6/43 Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 100 days. North Pacific: Airfield damage in Adak base fully repaired - still 41 port damage. Central Pacific: U.S. submarines continue reporting very light Jap air patrol activity. Otherwise quiet. Several bases in the Central and North Pacific areas (all port size = 3 or larger) now being prepared as staging locations for U.S. carrier ops if needed. All of these locations having sufficient fuel and supply on hand to replenish carrier TF's, also capable of flying naval search aircraft and as emergency refuge for damaged ships. These bases also in (slightly out of the way) locations less than obvious to Japanese eyes and ears. South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, otherwise quiet. Australia: Jap recon flight and bombing raid (airfield strike) on Tennant Creek. AAR follows. With the shortage of replacement P-40E & Hurricane II fighters, I had to strip several front-line locations including Tennant Creek of all fighter cover. Summary of Operations 2/7/43 Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 99 days. North Pacific: Base facilities in Adak base fully repaired and operational. Central Pacific: Preparations of forward bases for U.S. carrier ops continue - auxiliary ships, transports with supply and fuel are enroute to these locations. U.S. carrier TF's remain at Pearl for now refitting escorts. U.S. subs in the Kwajalein area reporting light land-based Jap air patrols (G4M Betty & Ki-49 Helens). A submarine minelaying TF (11 subs) reached Kwajalein and added to the minefield. Two of these subs struck mines, SS Finback reported sunk after hitting a mine. There's now a sizeable quantity of mines laid in Kwajalein base - both U.S. and Japanese. AAR follows. View of the Big Picture #9 So much for the "soft underbelly of Burma" theory... The recent carrier debacle off Port Blair amply demonstrated that. Plans had been considered to launch an amphibious invasion in this area. No exact time for this offensive had been set (it definately had not been planned for the near future) but Moulmein was set as the probable projected landing site. Possible initial landing and follow up forces in this move would have centered around three U.S. divisions (7th, 40th, 41st) and at least one U.S. Corps HQ transferred from the U.S. West Coast to Southeast Asia command (this is why I have 10K political points lying around) with MacArthur in overall command from HQ USAFFE (already in India). Other LCU's available to reinforce this offensive included fully rebuilt LCU's evacuated from Singapore (6th, 8th, 12th, 15th, 28th Indian and SSAF Brigades) as well as other LCU's now occupying defensive positions at various locations in India and Ceylon (including 7th Australian Div, 18th British Div, several more Indian Brigades, plus other units). Following initial landing at Moulmein, parts of this force would have deployed to take Tavoy and Rahaeng as blocking positions against Japanese relief attacks from Thailand and Indochina. Objective of the main force would have been capture of Rangoon from the rear, followed by a roll-up of Japanese forces in Burma from south to north. Supporting movement of Allied ground forces into Burma from Imphal and possibly Chittagong was projected to be the "anvil". Main intent of this plan was the encirclement and complete destruction of all Japanese forces in Burma (particularly ground forces), liberation of Burmese territory a distant second on the agenda. At least for now, there is not a soft underbelly to Burma. Better two carriers than an invasion force. While this practice occasionally leaves forward airbases undefended, it also leaves the Japs hitting an "empty bag". Airfield damage is easily repaired. What has been implemented in the India/Burma theater is a two-layer system of air bases. (1) Forward airfields from which combat missions are launched. These airfields only requiring the capability to receive aircraft moving up from the rear to attack and to launch the actual attack itself. Only limited recovery of damaged aircraft returning from combat missions is done at forward airfields, most damaged aircraft recovered in rear-area bases. (2) A network of designated rear-area bases to which front-line squadrons are transferred back to once depleted from combat mission(s). These rear-area bases are set up with HQ, aviation support elements, and large stocks of supply sufficient to quickly get both planes and pilots in a squadron fully operational and accomplish this without interference from enemy attack. The criteria I've used to determine an air squadron's depletion is 50% or more damaged aircraft and/or a significant pilot fatigue level. Location of rear-area bases is such that squadrons can easily transfer to them from forward airfields (operational planes in a squadron flying, damaged planes moved separately by rail in the same game turn). Rear-area bases are also beyond the reach of possible Jap air or naval bombardment attack. The two-layer system as operating now is capable of bringing a depleted squadron to full operational status (all planes undamaged, zero pilot fatigue level) within 3-5 days after transfer to the rear, using few or no replacements from the pool. The rear-area base network in India is now capable of handling 12-15 squadrons (either fighters or bombers) at a time on a continuous basis. What started as an experiment will in time become an assembly line. Back to the war... Jap air bombing attack (ground strike) on Myitkyina, light casualties reported. Alfred, Appreciate your reply and a correction on my part is also due... After going back and examining further, I have three RAF Air HQ's scattered across bases in NE India and HQ U.S. 10th Air Force is also moving into this area to help out. Most every Allied air base in NE India (both forward and rear-area) is within command radius of one or more of these Air HQ's. If I'm correct, nearly all Allied air operations in the NE India theater (both combat missions and "recovery" of air units at rear-area bases) should be receiving support from at least one Air HQ. I have no idea (seen nothing on this) whether two or more Air HQ's can combine support for air unit(s) flying a combat mission, repairing damaged aircraft, recovering pilot fatigue/morale levels, etc. If such an effect from multiple HQ exists, my situation in NE India would certainly apply.

Recent Japanese air attacks on Tennant Creek have resulted in only light damage to airfield facilities that is quickly repaired. While very few Allied planes in Tennant Creek have been destroyed by Jap attacks, the Jap raids are continuously damaging significant numbers of planes on the ground. A factor behind the current situation in Tennant Creek has been lack of fighter cover (CAP) over the base - this due largely to the recent shortage of replacement P-40E planes in the pool. Four USAAF fighter squadrons (all P-40E) had been based in Tennant Creek, three of the four squadrons were transferred out of Tennant Creek to rear-area bases in southern Australia when the number of P-40E's in the replacement pool were almost exhausted. Allied fighter squadrons are returning to Tennant Creek from bases in southern Australia - the 3 USAAF P-40E squadrons transferred out earlier, plus four RAAF fighter squadrons equipped with Kittyhawks and Hurricane II's. These squadrons now in Alice Springs reparing damaged aircraft (transfer to Alice Springs from southern Australia bases was by rail) and are expected to fly into Tennant Creek within the next 2-4 days. Even with the return of USAAF P-40E squadrons, supplies of P-40E replacement planes in the pool remain tight. NY59Giants, As far as setting objectives for my air HQ's, I set assigned objective for these HQ's generally to the base where they are located. I set air HQ objectives this way as a "default" since I didn't see anything in the rules or elsewhere on the effects of assigning air HQ's to specific objectives. I figured I could do no wrong (and perhaps nothing right either) by setting an air HQ's objective to the base it is located at. Since air HQ's have an objective like any other LCU, might as well set the objective to something even if there's no known point in setting it to anything.

NY59Giants, I posted a series of situation map screen shots following the 2/12 Operations Summary displaying Japanese controlled areas along an arc from Marcus Is in the north through Fiji in the south. These maps showing detected or known port and airfield sizes for Japanese bases, also locations of known Jap LCU's. I will have to put together a similar map of Noumea/Solomons/New Guinea area, also maps of Allied positions in Central and South Pacific area. I've actually been a straggling a little (3 days behind) with AAR reports, need to catch up on those too.

View of the Big Picture #10 - U.S. eastern Pacific front With the capture of Canton, Samoa, Fija, and Noumea by Japanese forces in early and mid-1942, the primary (historical) Allied route of communication between the U.S. and Australia/NZ was completely erased. This situation left all major base locations in the southern Pacific under Japanese control and only Penhryn, the Society Islands, and several other small bases remaining in Allied hands. None of the bases still under Allied control in the southern Pacific were occupied with significant air/ground forces nor had any significant stocks of fuel or supply on hand. With no bases in the southern Pacific capable of supporting Allied LBA or naval forces, any form of Allied transport shipping moving westbound from Panama City or the Line Islands, or eastbound from New Zealand would be unescorted, uncovered, and subject to Japanese attack with no warning. Except for single-ship TF's moving independently via the Panama City sea channels and the southern map edge, virtually no sea communication existed between the U.S. and Australia/NZ throughout 1942. One end result of the strategic situation in this region was the South Pacific theater as it historically existed was not a "going" entity. HQ South Pacific entered the game stranded in Auckland with virtually no units to command, and virtually no way of transporting South Pacific command reinforcements arriving in the U.S. to reach bases in or near the historical theater area without a high risk of unopposed Japanese interception. With all U.S. land and air reinforcement for South Pacific command "backed up" at bases in the eastern Pacific or on the U.S. west coast, the decision was made to move HQ South Pacific out of Auckland and transport it eastward across the Pacific to join the "backed up" air and ground forces under its command. HQ South Pacific was transported in fragments during the summer of 1942 from Auckland via Panama City and Los Angeles (recover elements disrupted in transport and re-unite the HQ as a single LCU) to its current location at Palmyra. In a similar manner, many of the air and ground reinforcements belonging to SW Pacific also "backed up" in the eastern Pacific and on the U.S. west coast. With HQ South Pacific deployed to Palmyra, a new theater was formed to start out of the Line Islands area to operate side-by-side with the Central Pacific theater along that theater's southern flank. Forces in the new theater include the "backed up" air and ground units of South and SW Pacific combined under South Pacific HQ. Approximately 80-90% or more of all U.S. forces beginning the game in the eastern Pacific or the U.S west coast, or arriving as reinforcements in the U.S. since 12/41, have concentrated in an area between the Hawaiian and Line Islands. While it makes future developments a bit more obvious for Pillager, I do have the advantage of operating on "interior lines". Central Pacific: Reports from U.S. subs indicating contacts with Jap air patrols continue at Kwajalein, quiet at Canton and Pago Pago. Jap patrol flights from Kwajalein include G4M Betty, Ki-49 Helen, and carrier-based aircraft (Vals & Kates). It appears that Pillager has kept at least part of the KB in Kwajalein. While it is very unlikely that a second attempt to hit the KB at anchor in Kwajalein by surprise attack is possible, the situation continues to be watched. If there is a second chance, it will be taken.
