RSGodfrey -> What is WiF? (10/14/2006 2:11:41 PM)

A common theme in many Matrix forums is the implicit assumption that all visitors are familiar with the game. This is an heroic assumption and it would be useful if there was some basic information for those who know little or nothing about the game.

thanks in anticipation of some clarification

Richard

The short answer is that it's a hex-based, strategic WW2 game that is being converted for the PC from a very successful maps, dice and rule-books wargame. I'm sure someone will elaborate. I've got an assignment to finish. [:(]

The board game is most probably the best strategic WW2 game there is. The computer version promises to be very good.

Cheers, Neilster

You can look here for links about WiF :

My definition (that I have as an introduction at my website about WiF) :
World in Flames (WiF) is an Australian Design Group’s strategic level game of the Second World War. Two to seven players will manage the economics, and conduct the military operations of the major nations involved in that conflict, from 1939 to 1945, either as a member of the Axis (Germany, Italy and Japan), or as one of the Allies (China, the Commonwealth, France, the USSR and the USA). Complete campaign games of World in Flames can last more than 100 hours.

WiF can be played with Days of Decision (DoD) from Australian Design Group, to play from 1936 to 1946. The players choose their policy, sign treaties, negotiate economic agreements, garantee minor countries, declare war, etc... The game is three sided, with Democrats (Nationalist China, the Commonwealth, France and the USA) teaming up with the Communists (Russia and Communist China) against the Fascists (Germany, Italy and Japan).

Here is the description from ADG Website (http://www.a-d-g.com.au/)
ADG is the publisher and designer of the original WiF FE game.

WiF FE Classic Description
World in Flames is Australian Design group's international award winning game that is the strategic game of World War II. Five full-colour maps portray all the theatres of war: Europe, Russia, Africa, the Middle East, India, Asia, the Pacific, the Atlantic and (most importantly) Australia.

1400 counters represent the armies and corps, the aircraft carriers, the naval task forces and the air groups that took part. Everything you need to re-fight the greatest conflict in history.

Two to six players make the strategic decisions that decide the fate of nations. What forces to produce, where to commit them, when and how? No two games of World in Flames play the same, no strategy is foolproof, any decision may have unforseen, long-term consequences.

World in Flames contains 1400 counters, 5 maps, 2 combat charts, one Production Circle and the comprehensive ©2003 rules and scenarios booklets, that have been extensively updated and revised based on 2 million playing hours of the world's greatest game.

If you want to change the world then World in Flames is for you.

There are two threads in this forum to help you out: "Directory for MWIF forum" which is one of the top section's 6 threads, and "MWIF Tutorial" which should be near the top of the lower section of threads.

I only update the Directory text every now and then, but its content is intended expressly for people who have never visited the forum before. Its first post provides a general background of Matrix Games' World In Flames (MWIF).

The tutorial thread is a work in progress and as such it has a lot of posts related to what the tutorials should contain and how the information should be presented. However, if you go through all the posts in the tutorial thread and just read those that include screen shots, you will be able to read through the first 3 tutorials for MWIF. Those provide a general background on the game and describe the countries and the map. As I said, it is a work in progress, so the first tutorial is missing a page, the second tutorial has one page mostly blank, and I have yet to write the final 2 pages of the third tutorial. Even with those caveats, 27 of the 31 pages for the first 3 tutorials are now done. Only 16 more tutorial segments remaining.[:)][:(]

If you have a question, just post it and someone will answer within a day.

mlees -> RE: What is WiF? (10/15/2006 8:25:42 PM)

I went and checked Matrix's "games" section: http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=296

A tad less than I expected. Will that be all, or is Matrix planning on expanding on that closer to release? (And is that your job, Steve?)

This is not my call. Rather it is up to Matrix to make all the marketing decisions. I'll provide input though (the pictures were very quick and dirty by me - 90 minutes plus a couple paragraohs of text not shown in "games" section).
