Pure Sim produces great "last names", but if you want a little more variety in "first names" try this site out:

Boys Names

Cool.[:)]

However, it still doesn't have enough names. BTW, PureSim does a poor job of outputting first names. We need to have the name files to be "editable". So we don't have so many:

John
Jonathan
James
William
Matthew

We need:

Jon
Jonny
Jonnie
Johnny

Jim
Jimmy
Jimmie

Matt
Matty
Mat

etc, etc, etc

I agree. I made a suggestion a couple of months ago that maybe this could be added to the XML file in the same way team nicknames and colleges are listed. Then you can edit and add whatever you want for name generation and add weights to make certain names appear more often. Not sure how difficult it would be to change the code to look in the XML when generating fictional names, but just a thought.

I would like to get to this as well, but there are a number of other issues to consider.

The ethnic composition of MLB has changed dramatically, and whether we like it or not, names tend to be ethnically linked. I find it as disconcerting to see a 1901 association populated with Hispanic names as I would find it to see a 2006 association without any Hispanic names, for example. The world has changed.

Patterns in name selection also change with time - a certain abbreviation for 'Richard' was an appropriate short-version of a name in my father's day, but would have been met with schoolyard derision by the time I reached gradeschool.

If we were going to do this 'right' it would include
- links between 'ethnic background' and 'name'
- links between 'year' and 'name'
- percentages of each 'ehtnic background' at each 'year'
