republicofpepsi -> Constant Crashing (10/15/2006 3:05:17 AM)

I just installed War in the Pacific and patched to 1.802 immediately. The game began crashing before I could even get to December 8, 1941. I removed the game and reinstalled and just applied the 1.8 path...same problem. I renamed the Sound folder to nosound as I had seen in the forum, and it seems to be working now....but I want to be able to play with sound.

When the sound was enabled, there was no distortion and everything ran well...until the ctd.

My system:
Windows XP Pro SP2 with the latest patches
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (i tried running the game with affinity set to just one cpu..didn't help)
2gb ram
eVGA 7800GT (latest drivers)
Soundblaster Audigy

Any ideas?

I think you say you reinstalled (from original image?) and then applied 1.8 (was this comprehensive 1.8 or incremental? How large was the patch file?)

I installed "WarInThePacific-SetupReleaseDR-v150.exe" that was given after I purchased the game and then the the 1.8 comprehensive patch, it was 73.7 mb.

Edit: Just to confirm I reverted the SOUND folder from NOSOUND back to SOUND and the game crashed during the very next combat phase. I did notice something, with sound "enabled" combat is very sluggish before it crashes. With sound disabled combat is fluid and smooth.

So has sound ever worked for you with WITP?

republicofpepsi -> RE: Constant Crashing (10/15/2006 5:54:43 AM)

I just installed the game today, and cannot play longer than 15 minutes or so with the sound enabled.  I've tried with the 1.5 downloaded version, and after each of the updates I mentioned.  Each time the game crashes if I have sound enabled.  With sound disabled, I have yet to have a crash.  I'm going to look tomorrow for updated drivers for my Audigy, to see if that resolves the issue.

So it seems like sound has never worked for you. And I do believe that is the case for a number of others, not the majority, but at least a group. I would presume that there is a incompatability issue, though I'm not aware of any investigations (though some may have been done before I got involved), I do know that sound in the game was reworked immediately after the game was released. But to my knowledge, it does work for the majority of players (like it works for me - though after several years of listening to it - I often run with it off - replacing it with some nice background music of my choice !).

This could work for you it did for me.
Make backups before you do this.

1.Rename file extensions.
Open a command line box in sound folder(M$ has a powertoy that makes this easier
CmdHerePowertoySetup.exe)

type in command line:
(from -> to)

"ren *.sfx *.wma" to rename the extensions to wma

2. Then using dBpowerAMP Music Converter (dMC)http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
it's free, convert wma files to wav 16 bit 2 channels 44100 khz.

3. Then type in command line:

"ren *.wav *.sfx"

and you are done. After doing this I've never had a crash since.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

War in the Pacific is so incredibly awesome..even without sound...it's the game I've been looking for for soooo long. I walk around at work now thinking of strategies... My last turn yesterday the Prince of Wales was on fire after a bomb hit to the turret, all I can think of is how to get her proper air support so history doesn't come true... I need her and the Repulse to drive off the Harauna bombardment task force...or is there another way...*ponders*

lol

Nothing has worked so far. :( Does the game care which version of Media Player I have? That's the only "odd" thing i can think of concerning my computer.
