ORIGINAL: dh76513 Hmmmmm, I knew Howard (Key's grandson) was imprisoned for treason in Fort McHenry, but I did not know he was shot and killed by a Union General. So, please do tell? I'm sorry, I misspoke - it was actually Key's son Philip Barton Key who was shot by Dan Sickles in 1859 in Lafayette Park, across from the White House. Key had been having an affair with Sickle's wife, and the murder trial set a precedent with the first use of the insanity defense. His defense attorney was none other than Edwin Stanton, who later became Lincoln's Secretary of War. Sickles is one of my favorite Civil War figures. You won't find a more colorful character.
