Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/28/2006 8:12:17 PM)

the Union troops close in and charge, and either pin me in place and do damage, or I sidestep them, and then am out of place and flanked for the next Bde coming up

Charges work, charges can be dangerous, charges can be down right nasty, but charges can get you slaughtered when they don't work

but....

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/28/2006 8:14:57 PM)

back and forth, they break up my line, my other troops knock them back, regain or change faceing and they charge again and break my line, mostly I got Muskets and Minies, so I do not really have stand off power

so got to take what they dish out and then hammer them when I can, a tight nasty little battle

(and those are the fun ones)

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/28/2006 8:18:24 PM)

what is really odd in this campaign, I have been working so HARD on the battles and getting my camps and resouces set up, that I have almost no reseach going, it is pretty much what I had at the start, with out a little help from over seas, I would really be hurting

I have 2 Upgrades so far, hasty Entenchments and Sharpshooter

(which to be honest, if you can only have two, those are not bad ones to have :)

the Union has 10

which really could mean I may be in trouble down the road

Naw, but it is nice to have something to worry about

Arditi -> RE: AAR II (10/28/2006 8:30:25 PM)

Keep up the interesting aar's Sarge.  Great stuff; I check the boards frequently for updates.  When did you serve?  I am an old Marine myself.  Semper Fi back at ya.

Greyshaft -> RE: AAR II (10/28/2006 10:55:05 PM)

On the hospital screenshots the map of Florida seems quite distorted in the south [&:]

Also , what are the units in the tactical battles with blue flag/white cross?

Thanks

come on - don't worry ... be happy [;)]

by the way, 6000 men in a confederate division is not bad. During second Manassas most divisions had 4500-5500 men available. Only AP Hills light division had 9000 men or more available...

on a second thought, there might be a lot of brigades in that division you were talking about.

I really like the setting and game design, also graphics are very involving - like it. I hope the AI won't be a cakewalk [:)].

Arditi -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 4:18:15 AM)

there are two flags like that, but I don't think I have shown the one Div in combat, so not sure which one we are talking about

there is the Missouri Sterling Price flag, Blue with red outline and white cross on the left side of flag, or there is the blue with the white cross in the middle which is the Alabama Inf flag

Missouri_Rebel -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 5:39:46 AM)

Yeah...haven't seen the Price flag yet so it must be the Bama Inf. flag you are talking about, a design stll in the state flag today.

I have a question;
Can you zoom in? Or better yet, out, in the tactical map? A zoom out feature seems to be needed quite often considering the size of said maps.

Mo Reb

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 3:55:10 PM)

here is Prices

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 3:56:27 PM)

and speaking of Flags here are some of Divs

hmmm, I will have to look, to be honest, I do not know if you can zoom or not, it could be helpful :)

Andy Mac -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 4:25:04 PM)

One of the thing that bugs me in COG is the length of the field to name units how big is it in FOF larger I hope ?

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 4:43:16 PM)

Ahhh

I think it depends on what screen or report you read

on somethings it looks like it is cut down, but then on the screens and reports it comes out right

so like the pic above, a number of my units have names that do not really show, but in the reports and on the map they do

LOL, I hope that comes across better then it reads to me :)

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 6:23:04 PM)

been a time of Rest for both sides, rearming and building of forces, with a lot of little side actions going on

England kind of likes me, but France and Europe like me lots

the union moves down and takes a peice of Virg, and I move Lee out to try and snach a Arty battery moving to another army

the Union decides to make a go for Wheeling again

I got some toys set up for him now

[image]local://upfiles/1438/345E4C20DE314DD1A95B6E4BC64C9415.jpg[/image]

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 6:30:48 PM)

I dont like this set up, it is strong and could be great, but only if the Enemy comes right at me, I expect him to loop around and take the VH to the Northwest and then march down the road at me, so I drop some troops to slow him down if he does

[image]local://upfiles/1438/680B8167C6604ABABBF6339D7836935B.jpg[/image]

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 6:34:01 PM)

so, what does the Union do, they come at me from the side of the front

and to the south, I do not give them much chance to close in, I got Hill on the Hill with some Withworths, and 2 Bdes are in hiding armed with Spencers

a sharp short fight (lasted two days)

I really need some upgrades

my Divs are all earning Flags and names now

[image]local://upfiles/1438/D15FB24CC73842238E7B74D778B50330.jpg[/image]

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 8:33:52 PM)

every once in a while, you get the perfect battle field

Rivers and swamps with a nice hill

got my cav and Arty blocking the road, the other troops are dug in behind a river, no charges today

on the hill, in the center is a Bde with Withworths, and on his flanks two Bdes armed with Spencers

and with a prefect terrain and good firepower, it is a slaughter

Robert E comes though again

the Union takes another hit to there Nat Will, and I am making lots of friends overseas

if the Union does not act fast, things are going to go down hill in a hurry

be glad when winter set in, my boys need some rest

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 8:36:52 PM)

just to the side at the top, you see part of my 4 Bdes of Cav

and with all of those Union troops turning there flanks and rear to them, is a RED FLAG waving in the breeze

Andy Mac -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 8:42:27 PM)

You always seem to be able to take the tactical defensive on good ground if you are given time which is great does the AI ever just set up and wait for you to come to it in COG it always seems to attack is it the same in FOF if yes thats going to be dissapointing as sitting on a hill with patience and set up arty is going to benefit the union a lot. i.e. is a Gettysburg even possible in the tactical battle or will the AI always try to force the issue

andysomers -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 9:22:08 PM)

I'm excited - Zachariah Deas!!!  I used to renact with the 19th Alabama Infantry - part of Deas Brigade.  You never hear mention of him anywhere except orders of battle it seems.

AS

Andy Mac -> RE: AAR II (10/29/2006 10:37:35 PM)

Isnt that one of those too good to attack postions ?

Unless you had to attack I would sit back or try to flank on the left did the AI send the Union straight at your dug in centre without adequate Arty support ?

pixelpusher -> RE: AAR II (10/30/2006 3:08:21 AM)

Quick graphics note:
One of the things that is been improved upon w/ the Forge engine is the implementation of seasonal terrain graphics. If you look at Sarge's screenshots you can see how the terrain and trees, etc. are gradually changing from summer to fall. The trees turn color and lose their leaves. Eventually it will be winter. It all happens fairly smoothly.

No, if the AI is on the Defence, it tends to stay in place, or move within its lines, it will try and shift forces to where they are needed

some times, the AI will make a rush, but as in WWII, it is more when it knows it don't stand a chance

I think the AI is much better then COG, but all the battles I have with it, I can still pretty much out think, out plan it

plus some of the setting, if you think you have too much time or not enough time, you can set all battles to be at close range or at long range, mine is sit on normal right now

Kewl, I am glad I guessed right with the battle flag for his Unit :)

Renacting ? shounds like that could be interesting

you should start a new post and tell some tales

tall or not

it did try to flank to the other side, but I had enough troops that it really didn't find the end of my line, the map edge is screwing up any movement to the other side

plus I not sure if you can see it from the mini map, but the rear area is a major swamp

so all in all, it was pretty much channelled to come at me

to be honest, I think that Hill defence screwed up how the AI seen the battle, if my line had been totally on the riverline, I think it could of fought a better battle

it was trying to flank the hill, but the rest of my line was in place to counter that

one hassle with me doing a AAR to show off the game, I am not the type to set up for a battle wrong, I got too much of a combat background and been a player too long, to do so

marecone -> RE: AAR II (10/30/2006 6:19:40 PM)

Those divison falgs a beautifull! Very nice job. Also like that seasonal graphics change.

Good job

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/30/2006 6:35:13 PM)

oh, I love the Flags, in fact I keep harping for more

it really does give the game a better feel

and helps on the battlefield

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/30/2006 6:38:17 PM)

well it is now into May of 63

the winter was pretty quiet with both sides healing there wounds and training (the Union got lots and lots of upgrades, but I got some good ones also)

the Union has been building a line of forts, I waiting too long, those are going to be murder to break, so guess I better go in and bleed them down some before hand

I was hoping to get France to join the war, have had them so close so many times, but now they are starting to drop away, so I think I better get some battles in and make them love me again

Robert E and boys are heading to Cinic, and a major party is planned on the other side of Kentucky

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR II (10/30/2006 6:40:08 PM)

well, this is what "should" happen

out numbered in both battles but should be able to make some noise
