Willard -> Demo?? (10/25/2006 8:46:44 PM)

I am not a big fan of hex games.
I own HTTR, COTA, Civil War Bull Run and Take Command 2nd Manassas to name a few.

I did not own Crown of Glory as I am not convinced on the hex issue.
However, the subject matter of this game interests me greatly.

Will there be a demo for this game?

Thanks!

Twotribes -> RE: Demo?? (10/25/2006 9:03:36 PM)

The game doesnt use hexes except for detailed battles as I understand it. It uses regions/provinces, which is how crown of Glory works.

A Demo would be nice.

I know that a demo has been considered, but do not know what has been decided. I'll let you know.

It turns out that there will not be a playable demo, though there will be a flash tutorial.

there are two things hard to find in this world, virgins in Hunter st Newcastle and Matrix demos[:D]

Gil R. -> RE: Demo?? (10/26/2006 7:58:40 AM)

My understanding is that this isn't a Matrix thing -- this is an us not trying to delay release of the game so that we can create a demo thing.

Jonathan Palfrey -> RE: Demo?? (10/26/2006 9:29:30 AM)

At the moment it sounds so good that I'll buy it without a demo.

Understandable but while you will of course have cash flow sooner by not delaying, you're likely to lose out on future
cashflow for the people who are on the fence. Certainly not a criticism as you have to judge what your cashflow looks like but I think the long-term benefits outweight the short-term cost. If you are simply cash-strapped, hopefully you will revist the decision shortly after launch so you can convince people to buy who are on the fence and just need to see an example of the product.

I wouldn't bother with a demo if I were making this game, either. Screenshots tell the story clearly enough. Actually, demos are more likely to persuade me not to buy a game than the other way around.

The biggest game juggernaut of our time, World of Warcraft, doesn't feature a demo.

Not true. They do have free previews from time to time. I don't know if they always have one but I know they have had free events. It's not even a very good analogy because you are comparing a subscription service to a one-time pay service.

Financials aside - which I understand if you can't afford it - if you believe in your product, you make a demo. It's a simple enough equation.

Jonathan Palfrey -> RE: Demo?? (10/27/2006 6:45:28 PM)

It's a rather interesting question, and if I were a game publisher I suppose I'd have to try to research an answer. Demos can have different effects on different people.

1. "I'm uncommitted; I try the demo; I'm hooked; I buy the game."

2. "I want to buy the game, but the demo's available, so I try it. It's disappointing. I don't buy the game."

3. "I'm a cheapskate with undemanding requirements. I never buy games; I just keep downloading and playing demos. Whenever I get sick of one, there's another coming."

Whether it's worth making a demo or not depends, I suppose, on what proportions of people fall into each of these different categories.

ericbabe -> RE: Demo?? (10/27/2006 7:23:41 PM)

Strategy wargames are in a niche market and so some sales principles that apply to the mainstream game market do not apply to games within this niche.  One of these differences seems to be in regard to demos: the advice I've received from Matrix in the past is that demos that they've done did not seem to generate enough sales to warrant the extra work required to produce a demo.  (Unfortunately we don't make quite enough money yet to throw away thousands of dollars on principle.)

If we get a major retail distribution deal, then perhaps the dynamic may change.

We do hope to release a flash file that functions as a sort of not-playable demo/tutorial.

It's a shame but I get it. Just keep those AARs coming then. :)

goodwoodrw -> RE: Demo?? (10/28/2006 4:48:27 AM)

I guess its a line ball decision to do a demo, plenty of fors and againsts. The game I have played the most is in the same niche or at least the small market of strategy/wargames. The game was CMBO I played that beta demo more than most other games. Battlfront was happy release a demo months before the actual release of the game, it certainly didn't effect CMBO sales. Anyway I'll buy FOF demo or no demo.
