Spring 45

With Russia occupying Rumania the Germans can never hope to gain the initiative, this is deemed unacceptable. With what turns out to be the largest single engagement of the war, battles unfold for the oil fields off the black sea. Almost 100 units clash as Russian units end up falling back after seeing most of their armor and heavy guns damaged or destroyed.

A favorable result for the Germans, it looks like regular infantry has learned how to effectivly avoid fire as the war continues.

Japan

The alarms are raised as sub fleets approach from the north, even more improved models ( 2 att 4 evas) threaten Japanese shipping. One sub is damaged in the Sea of Japan but north they prove more elusive.

In the south its Japans turn to play raider and transports are attacked but veteran naval units still defend the area with fighter support forcing a hasty retreat. Subs also spot wallied taskforce forming at pearl but perhaps not sea worthy yet?

China and Russia both kept in check this turn and it allows the Japanese room to focus on the encroching wallies navy.

As the turn begins, the Red Army moves into a fairly strong position at Kiev and licks its wounds after the defeat in Rumania.

But in the West, the Allies commence a bold (and somewhat desperate) offensive dubbed Operation "Northwind." Identifying relative weakness in Denmark and a token position in Poland - and also considering the bulk of the German army is busy in the Balkans, FDR and Churchill approve a leapfrog offensive. I learn a bit from my mistake last year and pummel the artillery in Denmark - guarded by one AA. First, a wave of fighters comes in to soften up the attack. Then an all-out aerial bombardment successfully finishes off both artillery. Here's a bit of the combat detail from the second air attack involving the bombers.

The situation near the end of my turn. Can the Allies take out Germany and Japan in time, or will the clock run out? I think Tim will make it tough, but the challenge will be fun. [:)]

Timmeh -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/5/2006 10:14:30 PM)

Summer 45

With large numbers of German infantry still recovering from the victory hangover in Rumania, General Disarray is the only one available when the phone rings...

With landings in Poland and Denmark by troops with better support units than the germans can field spells disaster for all of germany. All available units counter attack into poland and its left with only its infantry ( 7/8 now, equal to German inf[X(]). Desparate orders to fall back can only partially be filled but destroying the armor ( 10/9 ) and arty ( now 11 attack !) may just save an assault on more territory from Poland next turn?

[image]local://upfiles/19119/F38476B4AC09417BB7DCE2E697F5AFD4.jpg[/image]

A full 10 units wait on trains in Rumania, and militia scurry about spreading rumors of Russian retribrution attrocities. Units recalled from everywhere scramble to defend the Fatherland [:(]

German production also in chaos, 24 units spent this turn, but partisans start rearing their ugly heads now and damage not the facility but the rp's on the way to the factory in several territories [:-]. It looks like Germany can hold while the wallies reinforce, but how many more months can the Germans hold off the wallies now that they can strike the capital?

Timmeh -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/5/2006 10:31:41 PM)

Japan

The lights go out in far south but the spidey sense sez the carriers are still there, Japan attacks into Rangoon but fails to dislodge wallied inf. Subs off Formosa are sent packing but all 6 heavies required, only 1 wallied sub left in operation. Inland China is attacked again and reduced to 2 reg.inf and a handfull of militia, this frees up several veteran inf in China for redeployment.

Siberian conductors should probably avoid booking holidays as its sure to be denied by managment in the next few months [;)]

Japan sends more troops to overcome inferior weapons, with China incapacitated Japan's attempts to hold here are improved.

[image]local://upfiles/19119/1494E8751DA84F2E93BFA9EF8971CF8A.jpg[/image]

A 2-1 infantry advantage for Japan here but its expected that Russia will max out rail reinforcements over the next few turns and risks Japan falling into the low teens in production shortly... China can't help which , err, helps! me that is, and are the wallies in danger if they redeploy to assault Japan's RP from the south when victory in Germany can't afford any delay?

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/6/2006 1:27:27 AM)

Things are really getting interesting! At the start of my turn, I decide to move on East Germany. The Red Airforce is called in to help soften up air defenses. A bit of a disappointment here.

But the Soviets have an edge on the Japanese fighters and we have more luck in the East.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/6/2006 1:32:05 AM)

And then a surprise. After being pro-Allied for quite some time, the Greeks decide that Summer of 1945 is the time to join. I would have liked them earlier, but I can't complaint given the German deployment! It's kind of funny, becaues it was totally chance that they picked this turn to join - but in real-life terms it would make total sense given the way the war is beginning to turn in Europe and the weak German forces nearby.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/6/2006 1:34:56 AM)

It not us then who, if not now then when? Because each troop in a territory cuts down on op-fire, a combined amphibious invasion and invasion from Poland looks like it has a good chance. The Allies begin with an air attack.

[image]local://upfiles/16405/3C2E5A1DF37E4F0F9B3F1E844B6007D2.jpg[/image]

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/6/2006 1:38:02 AM)

The troops from Poland dramatically lower op-fire but I think we still lost 3 units in the course of landings to the heavily suppressed German artillery and/or the air that is remaining. I think most of this was to automatic hits and that the last unit I lost was an armor unit from England. I regret trying to add him to the invasion. But I did not want to risk failure. This is shortly before the actual attack.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/6/2006 1:40:34 AM)

And Berlin falls to the Western Allies! Talk about alternate reality.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/6/2006 1:45:10 AM)

The Allies also liberate Western France. The heat is on Germany at this point - but I think it might be very tough taking what I need to force a surrender. Also at the end of the turn, the Allies get the bomb (pretty close to historical schedule actually)! Japan is still healthy, however, and forcing them to surrender also may prove difficult.

Timmeh -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/7/2006 2:14:02 AM)

Fall 45

All out panic takes over in Germany and 'General Disarray' is replaced with 'General Chaos' ! [;)] With the fall of Berlin its all but over for Germany, troops are split between W.Germany and Chechoslovakia, but with Berlin in enemy hands if another core German territory falls we must surrender.

I might hold out untill the Winter of 46' but after the result in Berlin in the summer my confidence is shattered... The wallies will need to take either W.Germany or Chechoslavakia this turn to give them an extra turn to reduce Japan's production to force a surrender there as well.

Timmeh -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/7/2006 2:19:50 AM)

Japanese infantry do manage to recapture Rangoon from the wallies in the fall but news from Germany is cause for concern. The poopstorm thats sure to be unleashed here when Germany surrenders isn't fully realized by dug in Japanese troops yet...
[image]local://upfiles/19119/308ED5D5A2D34AFD865809BA788A7A43.jpg[/image]

In game terms, I desparately need to hold onto Germany this turn or risk losing the war altogether ! Japan will surrender if she falls under 10 pp ( 19 now) and if Germany can occupy the allied effort for one more season, Japan would only need to hold onto 10 Production for another 3 months after that to force a draw, six months and the end of the game and a minor victory (highly unlikely now [:(]).

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/7/2006 6:02:12 AM)

A relatively quiet turn as I see I have little chance of taking out Germany. The Russians settle for moving into Hungary in force and taking out the militia guarding Rumania to secure the rear.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/7/2006 6:06:34 AM)

In the West, the Allies reinforce East Germany. Truman and Churchill also approve dropping the bomb on West Germany in an attempt to end the war sooner rather than later. (I actually feel a little guilty about this.) Only a few turns left, and at this point I don't expect to win next turn (Winter). That means the only realistic possibility of an Allied victory (a marginal one) is in Spring - thanks to the favorable odds shift since the Axis didn't reach their high watermarks. I don't want to jinx myself, but I think this game is more likely to end in a draw or even some type of Axis victory. We shall see!

Timmeh -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/7/2006 8:24:34 AM)

Winter 46

German misery is at an all time high, with the death toll climbing Germany enters 46 beaten and bruised. AA cannot hold back the new super weapon Churchill and his cronies have unleashed on an unsuspecting German nation...

Meager attacks into Hungary fail to produce enough casualties to be hopeful of lasting till spring. With German population cut in half from the bombings very few new troops are available. A mysterious shortage on white linen reported all over Germany.
[image]local://upfiles/19119/A41389945AFF4527B8E02E488AC2235C.jpg[/image]

Managing to survive till now is more than expected after the gamble into Rumania caught German troops out of postition. Having to defend Austria now spreads the Germans thin and I think about the woulda, coulda, shoulda's [;)]

Timmeh -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/7/2006 8:34:15 AM)

Japan

Wallies CAG probing Japanese defenses last turn.

This Fleet pulled back to saftey but they'll be back... American CV task force also spotted off midway 5 BB and 3 CAG's coming soon to a Japanese held area near you!

Timmeh -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/7/2006 8:46:58 AM)

Japan's fortunes lie in large part with the Russian coast, if Russia breaks through, holding onto 10 production would not be easy. American and British forces nibbling away in the south or even attempting the bull rush to cull Japan is just a matter of time now.

I try to defend against combined arms here and load up tac air to blunt the Russians attack. I expect another feint next turn here as Russia used its rail on troops, I cant see the supply chain but I suspect Forwarn can't bring the 50 + supply needed for a full scale assault but we'll see.
[image]local://upfiles/19119/8AC458CB023B4548B82E97ADEA8AFDDF.jpg[/image]

A real nailbiter now, I cant really judge the wallied capability to strike but strike he will. Long turns for Japan now, short ones for the Allies I would imagine. What and how much Forwarn45 can shift over to attack Japan now will decide if this game goes the distance or not.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1x1 Total War Tim-Forwarn45 (11/8/2006 5:52:12 AM)

Winter is a tough time to attack, and Germany will hold this turn. The Russians do attempt a low odds attack into Austria. I think it actually ended even a bit worse than predicted. Looks like the pic is too large to attach - oops. Ok so after toying with the idea of a low odds attack on West Germany, the WA opt to learn from Russia and wait instead. Reinforcements are called in. In the Pacific, the Allies hit part of the Japanese fleet with a large carrier strike.
