Take out the low countries with inventory from eastern germany.
People say on your first turn you have to take out western europe. seems the only way to do that is to move troops that are next to poland into the low countries then move tanks into france.

But there are only 3 transports. How do you get the troops there?

I think they ment the other western, germany doesn't have the means to take out France or Britian on turn one. Poland turn 1 then the world...

Here is the post I got it from. It's out of the top 10 things all players should do in the regular forums.
Specifically how do I get 4 troops to invade low country?

For Germany on turn 1, here are 4 Must Do things:

Attack Denmark with 1 Infantry (duh!)
Attack Netherlands with 4 Inf, 1 Arty & 1 Flak (You'll want the arty & flak there for turn 1 protection anyhow, the odds are 0.81 attacker losses and 4.74 defender, you don't want any Inf surviving and retreating to W. France!)
Move your Stuka from W. Germany to Netherlands, THEN use it to attack the arty in W.France (you NEED it IN Netherlands to threaten England next turn!)
Attack W.France (after the arty is knocked out, use Bombers if neccessary) with 5, 6 or 7 tanks as suits your fancy :) If 3 get damaged , you will have a long and difficult game :(

The rest is up to you! Good luck!

This sounds like WAW1 to me. That starts in 1940, so it is quite different from AWD "Total War", which starts in 1939. That course of action looks roughly correct for "Scenario I - 1940 Start" in AWD, however.

For Total War, the typical sequence is something like:

1) Summer 1939, take W Poland. Move everything you can to W Germany.
2) Fall 1939, move everything you can to W Germany.
3) Winter 1940, take the Low Countries, set up your forces to allow a strong blow to _either_ W France or E France, while ensuring that W Germany is safe (this would typically mean a lot of infantry+art in TLC, a bunch of armor in W Germany).
4) Spring 1940, take either W or E France, whichever seems most appealing for whatever reasons. The combats being roughly equal, it is better to take E France because the 3 factories in W France will produce for Germany that same turn.

Whether you take Denmark before Spring 1940 or during Spr 1940 or later is up to you. There are good War Readiness based reasons for postponing Denmark at least until the formation of Vichy, but eventually you will probably want to take it to defend the Baltic sea lanes.

Does the AI play differently with fog of war ON?  So far I've only played with fog of war OFF and the AI seems to be able to block my every advance at the Russian front.

Actually, its really irritating that the Russians can impede your prgress so unfairly just by placing militia everywhere in the beginning.  You waste precious movement killing them and 2 turns later you're on the path to being toast (aka stalemated at that front for ~8 turns as the Russians continue to build up their strength.  I'm able to build up 20 units at Romania, 20 units east of East Poland  with 6-7 units north of them and 10 units at Finland and the Russians are able to delay you long enough to make the whole effort for naught.  And every time you make a bit of progress at one of the points along the line... they are to magically railroad everything into a strategic block position.  Their railroad capacity seems limitless no matter how far away they are shifting units.

And I'm not understanding why for example, my 5 infantry, 2 tanks, 1 artillery and 1 bomber cannot just coast through 4 militia 2 bombers and 1 piece of artillery.  I dont understand why crappy defenders like "militia" still require huge overwhelming force to take over.

No, AI play is the same. In fact, FOW doesn't apply to the AI (it can see everything regardless).

As to the Russian militia, I'm afraid that is just part of the way the game works. I assure you that it is in fact possible to win the game even given the existence of Russian militia.

Note that if you give the Russian AI a difficulty advantage it gives them free supplies. I.e. it becomes incredibly easy for the AI to repair infrastructure. It can play quite different against a person.

The fact that they slow you down so much is one of the reasons that you really want to make a big turn 1 punch. The further you get in turn 1, the further you are (surprise!), and by knocking out some of the population centers you also reduce the amount of militia you will face.
