GKar -> PBEM Event Log? (11/1/2006 1:09:00 PM)

I'm well into my first PBEMs right now, but I wonder if there's some kind of event log anywhere? E.g. I suddenly realized that Iraq has revolted, but I never got a message about it. Same for tech advances and intelligence actions, several things seem to be hard to detect when playing PBEMs - although they are visible in SP mode.

Was this in our game?

GKar -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (11/1/2006 1:12:11 PM)

No, don't worry. [:D]

MrQuiet (now proud owner of Suez) will know what I'm talking about.

Its under consideration for a patch (well, I am considering coding it anyway). Its up to Joel to decide though.

GKar -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (11/1/2006 2:42:15 PM)

Good to know, and thanks for considering. As mentioned above, it would be nice if tech advances and intelligence actions (to make it short: everything that is reported between the turns normally) were included as well. [:)]

I'll second this - it's really needed given how important events can be and how nasty it can be to miss em :)

When you steal technology could it be possible to know how much your R&D was increased?

That would be like knowing exactly what your spies managed to rob.

If so could you put that into the first patch.

Thanks

When you steal tech, you always gain one research point per message displayed so I'm not sure why you would need more than the current message.

If Jan can code the report log, it does sound like a good idea to me. Of course we'd have to figure out how a player would access the report log, but I'm all for making one available somehow. I'm not sure how easy this will be, and what implications there are when fog of war is used, but this is something to be thought about before the report is coded.

JanSorensen -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (11/1/2006 8:25:48 PM)

Alright, I envision a low tech solution where the player presses a key and the normal "information" window pops up showing a long list of all the events in the game sofar - showing the newest events at the top. I would quite likely want to keep a fixed number of events - say the latest 256 (or whatever number turns out to work).

Something like:

Spring 1941
- Coup in Iraq
- Higgins Boats breakthrough
...
Winter 1941
- ....
...
Fall 1940
...

Now, what do people think would be a good idea to have on the list? Please specify by example so I know exactly which message in game you mean.
Mind, having too much on the list makes it unreadable.

GKar -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (11/1/2006 8:35:50 PM)

- game events like the ones you mentioned
- research breakthroughs (you see them in SP with FoW on, right?)
- intelligence actions ("tech stolen" and such)

Forwarn45 -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (11/1/2006 10:17:48 PM)

Alternatively, you could just add it to the current replay function so when you review the last turn you see both what they did and what events have occurred. On the other hand, I guess it's nice to keep a log that goes back longer than that.

GKar's list sounds good to me - and I'm assuming game events include countries' production increases as well as neutral countries that joined the war - not by special event (like pro-allied countries often do when the US is at war).

Both good points!

The event log is included in V1.008, thank you! [&o]

I'll repeat my additional suggestion here so that it doesn't get lost:

One suggestion though: I really think that research advances should be listed there too ("Land Attack for Heavy Bomber increased to 6"). They are tedious to keep track of at the moment.

Jan, there seem to be a few typos in the event log, nothing serious though:

JanSorensen -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (1/25/2007 12:59:51 AM)

Please mail me a save game just before the Spring 1940 WA production phase so I can take a look.
My email is janbs@stofanet.dk

GKar -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (1/25/2007 1:12:09 AM)

Hmm, it happened in my current tournament PBEM with Forwarn, so you might need his password. I still have the saves for "Spring 1940 Soviet Union" (his turn) and "Summer 1940 Germany" (my turn) but I'm not sure if that's what you want.

WanderingHead -> RE: PBEM Event Log? (1/25/2007 2:07:33 AM)

I have already found a bug that may explain it. Hadn't reported it, planned to just fix it.

I'll send Jan the info.
