Syagrius -> How to win with such lousy moral as the Ottomans?? (11/6/2006 10:34:29 PM)

I tried my first game as Spain and then Turkey. I found out later that those two countries have bad moral for their troops, especially Turkey. Gee, theses guys are always on the retreat! Did somebody managed to win games with Turkey? I guess I will try it out with Britain, they seems to have better moral.

The "simple" way to do better with the Turks is to avoid war for the first two years, while you increase the morale of your forces via higher morale replacements.

Allow forage losses to reduce your at-start troops to about 50%, allowing higher morale replacements to fill in. Also, build new divisions wherever you have increased barracks and (for Art) factories at or above 5 levels.

A decent number of your divisions should be around 4.0 morale after 2 years, along with better Artillery and upgrades you've taken to improve morale (for example, Patriotism). Your irregular cav is very difficult to improve; I keep them out of fights and use them exclusively for charges against disordered forces.

After about 4 years or so, your Army should be roughly the equal of any non-French Army (History buffs shudder).

For what it's worth.

Hi, I have won games as Ottomans. I never left Turkish terrority and fought a few wars with Russia when they tried to invade.

First raise your training levels and change draft ages to 17 to 35 years old.
Second disband all irregular cav (to save money)
Third put all units inside a city (cheaper cost)
Don't have forces in excess of forage capabilty in any region.
Increase art and barracks to where you can produce Corps and slowly add units to these to increase movement and use leaders.

I start my games in 1792 and by 1800 the Ottoman Army can defeat other armies. I score points for population happiness and defeating invasions. By 1810 I am in first or second place. After that it's a matter of winning battles. Do not accept invitations to provide protection to areas that you cannot march through friendly territory to reach or that will result in war with a major power prior to your military containing at least 3 Armies with 3 corps each. (I assign 1 Cav Corps and two infantry Corps per Army) and place one in Eygpt 1 in Capital and have 1 for field in European regions of Empire. In major wars they all move to scene of action. Fight all battles yourself because you'll do better then auto battle results.

Spain is another nation that is easy to win with provided you stay out of alliances that involve you in wars early in game. The hardest nations are prussia and Sweden because you will be invaded early on (Prussia begins at war with France and Russia often stabs you in back while your former Austrian Allies desert you.) Sweden is less exposed to attack but also has few places it can expand into without a war with at least 1 major power.

I would love to arrange an online game where every nation was human player controled to see how COG performs under those conditions.
