I notice a province in the western part of North Carolina called "Southern Smokies." To be 100% correct, the Smokies are only a very small part of the much larger Blue Ridge and Appalachian chain. I actually was backpacking in the "Southern Smokies" province this past weekend - but was nowhere near the actual Smokies. If it's just a really easy cosmetic change, I would suggest "Southern Blue Ridge," or perhaps "Appalachian Highlands," or simply "Highlands."

This is very cosmetic, but geographically incorrect. Hope that helps - thatnks again for all the great information coming out!!!

Wait I see "Northern Smokies" now too.  My suggestion is "Northern/Southern Highlands."

I don't know Andy. I would think the smokies basically include area's as far as knoxville and a big part of western North Carolina. The locals consider the area The Great Smoky Mountains, even if it is not in 'the park'.
I too just got back from the area of Southern Smokies last month. Spent a week in the area around Cherokee NC, and Bryson City. Had a blast. Got away with just the wife and did we ever have a good time. Did a little hiking, train ride and a great drive up the Blue ridge parkway to Ashville. Biltmore was cool. The Nantahala Outdoor center was neat also, white-water rafting and all. Took hwy 129? back home and went through the 'Dragons Tail' 138 turns in 11 miles. There were Ferrari's and crotch rockets GETTING IT on the turns. Crazy.

Anyways, what do the others think? Anyone from the area?

I rode Dragon 129 earlier this year and got carsick driving!!! You are right - it is a fantastic area.

I've hiked extensively in the Appalachians - hiked the AT in 1995 and love the Smokies.  Some of the finest scenery and mountains between Georgia and Maine - if not the country!!!

The Smokies are the area between the Little Tennessee River (the 129 highway you spoke of) on the south and Davenport Gap (the TN/NC border on Interstate 40) on the north.  The other ranges in the areas are various names - to the south the Stecoah/Cheoah range and the Nantahalas, and to the north other ranges, the Roan highlands, the Black Mountains, et al.   The Smokies specifically refers to that area I described earlier (outlying towards Knoxville and the Bryson City area as you noted).

Again this is a very minor point, but technically I think it would be more appropriate to call it something like "Highlands."  Definitely not something that will stop my praise of this game!  I just figured Gil and them other Yankees didn't know no better.

True, but they do make a nice game.

"Highlands"? That sounds like a Scottish game. If ever we do, say, Sean Connery vs. the Loch Ness Monster I promise we'll have a province called "Highlands."

I'll look into this later. I can't tell from these posts if this is an unambiguous mistake or just something mildly wrong, or not really wrong at all.

We're having a bit of fun - but it's mildly wrong.  Either way it's of little consequence, just a cosmetic thing.  No sweat.

FWIW, this province originally began as a single province called "Smokies" and was split later on.  Unfortunately nothing involving "Blue Ridge" or "Appalachian" would work, IMO, since even the Blue Ridge extends all the way up into Virginia.  "Highlands" is interesting, and we would have considered it earler, but unfortunately it is too late.  Thanks for the suggestion, though.  :)

I don't care if it is called Mt. Fuji, bring on the game!

regularbird -> RE: Southern Smokies (11/15/2006 7:02:02 AM)

Mt. Fuji it is!

andysomers -> RE: Southern Smokies (11/15/2006 6:03:19 PM)

Mr. Z - I agree with you about Blue Ridge (which technically end at the Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania) and Appalachians (which technically end in Quebec, and even then run underneath the ocean).

Smokies (or Mt. Fuji for that matter) is something that I can certainly live with -- no big deal whatsoever.  Thanks for hearing my suggestion.

FWIW, I like "Southern Smokies" because it is colorful and evocative. I hope Matrix keeps it.
