"Sub for this player" usage setting

I've been playing PureSim for many years, and I still haven't figured out what the "Sub for this player" usage setting governs. Does it govern how the player is treated when the AI manager is making out a starting lineup? Does it govern how often the AI manager pinch-hits, pinch-runs, or defensively substitutes for a player once he's in the lineup? Both? Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.
