What do you usually use for a map source when you design a moderna-era scenario? There is a number of good tools available in software form and on the internet but the problem in the end is superimposing a hexgrid onto the map. I have tried using the map included in Encarta 2007 by copying the map to Photoshop and then superimposing the hexgrid. But the Encarta map is rounded, it is projected as a globe, and the pieces want fit together. Any good tips where I can find good terrain data for 5 and 10 kilometer hex scenarios??

Thanks!

Already tried http://maps.google.com/ ?

There are two useful tools available for helping to convert your maps to toaw, one at TDG: http://www.tdg.nu/download/odd.htm - with ODD's map scaler you can superimpose a hex grid at any scale you like on your map, and one at SZO/XG's Toaw Zone: http://toaw.xtreme-gamer.com/?p=10 - this excellent programm by Bob Cross ([&o]) calculates the longitude and latitude of each hex on the map. Have a look at it.

The ODD utility is excellent for superimposing a hex grid once you have designed your map. For a 10km map of France which I have in progress I constructed a simple conical 1 degree grid and add the terrain by distorting 1 degree squares from Microsoft world atlas. When the map is finished create a bitmap and use ODD for the hexes.

Google Earth- which gives you the latitude and longitude of the mousepointer- plus Bob Cross' Latlong program make a formidable combination.

Wow ok! This seems like the way I wanna go. Did you copy terrain from Microsoft Encarta? Could you please explain in some more detail how you did it? Did you copy the terrain from Encarta to ODD or what?

Thanks!
