Great_Ajax -> Amazing Game (12/1/2006 6:17:28 PM)

I just have to say job well done to Western Civ Software and Matrix Games! I just recently within the past couple of years became interested in the War Between the States (Mama thumps me if I call it the Civil War. LOL) after doing some family research. I have been looking for a good strategic wargame for the period and this game has proved to be the exact game that I was looking for. I was concerned that it would be overly difficult, as it looks like Forge of Freedom falls into the "Easy to Learn and difficult to master." In my first game, the bastard Yankees seiged several of my Miss. R. forts before I could fortify them and in the summer of '62 are pushing into VA. The tactical and strategic options are incredible. So my hat goes off to the gentlemen responsible for this outstanding game. BTW, I'm an Alabama boy and my mother's Gresham side fought in Georgia Infantry Regiments (2nd and 31st) with the Army of Northern Viriginia and Jackson's Corps. My father's Marshall side fought with Illinois Regiments in Tennessee and Mississippi.

Trey - well put, and my sentiments exactly (despite what I think about the cover art!).  I agree 100%.  Another hats-off to Matrix and Western Civ from Alabama (Huntsville in this instance!).

Thanks! Good to hear!

Hey Gil and rest of the Team,

Whilst I patiently wait for the quick fix siege patch, just wanted to say a well done to what I think will be an outstanding game.  Ive already had some great detailed battles where the AI has surprised me a couple of times and other times is smart enough to stay put and wait.  Strategiacally, the AI seems on their game too, where they will not push the envelope if not required.  All in all, a vast improvement on CoG on all levels.  Good manual too (index anyone?).

So well done.  Now hurry up and get that bloody siege patch out (I thought it may of been a auto-save problem, turned it off, thought I was in the clear but no luck).

ericbabe -> RE: Amazing Game (12/2/2006 9:56:47 PM)

Thank you all for the very kind remarks.

Siege bug seems to be fixed.  I'd like to look at one or two other problems that are being frequently reported, then we'll try to get a patch up as soon as possible.

elmo3 -> RE: Amazing Game (12/2/2006 10:26:42 PM)

Yes, thanks for a great game. Don't let the nit pickers and designer wanna-be's get you down!

ericbabe -> RE: Amazing Game (12/3/2006 2:19:16 AM)

The feedback ultimately makes the game better, I hope.  Just be sure to point out what you like as well as what you don't like!

elmo3 -> RE: Amazing Game (12/3/2006 3:09:15 AM)

I agree, feedback is valuable Eric. However the tone of a few people here when giving their feedback has been pretty rude. Just wanted you to know your efforts are appreciated.

Queeg -> RE: Amazing Game (12/3/2006 3:17:13 AM)

Agreed. I'm having a great time with this game. The depth is amazing. Great job.

Agree with all sentiments here.

I've been having a great time (siege bug excepting) all around. While I miss some of the diplomatic efforts (understandably so given the game setting) of COG, this is another winner.

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: Amazing Game (12/3/2006 6:12:34 AM)

Worth the buy.  I would recommend it if your interested in the civilwar at all. [;)]

Steely Glint -> RE: Amazing Game (12/3/2006 7:15:25 AM)

The game is worth buying but boy does it ever need a historical mod.

Absolutely agree. [&o]As it sits, the game is great and will be good for a lot of replay. But I am still looking forward to the Historical Mod.

rogeur -> RE: Amazing Game (12/3/2006 10:10:32 AM)

I agree, great game. Glad i bought it.The manual is big and has lots of info.
It's also the weak part i think (the manual).Abcense of the index is one.
Also i would have liked to see examples in it.I mean, lots of things are obvious
for americans i guess, but for the rest of the world, they aren't.
A digital map would be nice, so we all can find the states and places.
Am i whining ? No, i'm not, just have some constructive thoughts.
Altough i paid 75 dollar for it , i'm very pleased with this game.
I really enjoyed the AAR . Made me wanna buy this sucker even more.
Thumbs up guys !

ps liked the macromedia tutorial very much .

I too want to thank you for your efforts.

Top shelf...............when a few of the hist things are fixed then it will go......... TOP SHELF

Great_Ajax -> RE: Amazing Game (12/3/2006 6:27:40 PM)

I was really getting into my game by thrashing the Union armies in Kentucky in the summer of '62. After that I seiged Lexington and Frankfort by Jan '63. Then the game crashes. This game definitely has the "just one more turn" mentality but I have to put it on standby until the siege bug gets fixed.

Siege bug seems to be fixed in our testing. We'll try to make a patch available within a day or two. There are two or three other things I'd like to address.

Great_Ajax -> RE: Amazing Game (12/4/2006 1:06:12 AM)

That would be outstanding! Thanks a bunch. Can't wait to get back to the game.

Hi Rogeur,

FYI, I'm working on a reference map that will be useful for everyone. We'll probably make it available in the following forms:

1) a digital .jpg or .pdf version available to download for free
2) since people will also want a 'nice' printed version, and it's too big to print on a home printer, we'll probably also also offer it as a 23x35" sized poster print.

Glad you're enjoying the game! It's the positive comments that keep us going!

Hi Rogeur, here is a map for your reference. Because the boards have a 200kb max size, it's somewhat small. I'll see about finding hosting space for the larger, higher resolution file.

incbob -> RE: REFERENCE MAP (12/10/2006 4:20:28 PM)

Just thought I would add my comments as well. I purchased COG and quickly found out that I just couldn't seem to "get into it" and it seemed for me difficult to work with and control.

I knew the quality of FOF would be good based on COG, but wondered if I would have the same problem. Reading the AAR's and the manual though let me skip right into Advanced and I agree that it had that just one more turn. I find, when I turn it off, I am starting to go..."Yeah, but what if next turn I do this?"

Love the game....much better than COG and would actually like to see a COG II using FOF's ideas....thanks for finally making a Strategic Level ACW game that rocks. [&o]

MorningDew -> RE: REFERENCE MAP (12/10/2006 6:46:13 PM)

Addng my two cents...same thing with COG. Knew there was something awesome there, but could never find it. With FoF, I found it immediately (OK, actually as soon as the seige patch was out[;)]). I finished my first full game (Basic) yesterday, after one turn had the UI down (and felt it was intuitive) and was looking forward to playing more.

Great job.
