Four Montreal pitchers combined to shut out LA. Gary Carter's three-run homer in the first inning provided the game's only runs as the Expos took a 3-2 series lead with a 3-0 victory at Olympic Stadium.

The Montreal quartet of David Palmer (3 1/3 IP), John D'Acquisto (3 2/3 IP), Steve Rogers (1 IP) and Jeff Reardon (1 IP), "limited" the Dodgers to eleven hits, while walking five and striking out nine.

Game six shifts back to LA, with Scott Sanderson and Jerry Reuss taking the hill. They were the starters in a memorable game two, won by Montreal 12-11 in twelve innings.

Pedro Guerrero's infield single in the bottom of the seventh scored pinch-runner Ken Landreaux with the decisive run in the Dodgers' 3-2 victory over the Expos. Dodger starting pitcher Jerry Reuss pitched seven strong innings and collected the win. Dodger closer Steve Howe survived a scare in the ninth, but retired the side and earned the save. In the ninth, Montreal had speedsters Tim Raines and Ron LeFlore on base with one out, and Al Oliver and Tim Wallach coming up. Oliver grounded into a force play, leaving runners on the corners. Wallach flew out to end the game.

It all comes down to a game seven, with Montreal's Randy Lerch and LA's Don Sutton taking the mound. Montreal took last season's title in dramatic fashion, scoring five times in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Houston. If the Expos hope to repeat, they'll have to win game seven on the road against the experienced veteran Sutton, who held the Expos scoreless for 6 1/3 innings in game three.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/12/2007 10:26:20 PM)

Don Sutton, Burt Hooton, and Alejandro Pena repeated their game three performances in game seven, combining to shut out the Expos on six hits, as the LA Dodgers won their second championship with a 4-0 victory in game seven.

LA's Dusty Baker opened the scoring in the first with a solo homer. Following a Baker double in the seventh, Reggie Smith smacked his fourth homer of the series. Mike Scioscia added an RBI single later in the seventh for the final run.

As expected, Montreal's John D'Acquisto won the Cy Young Award and San Diego's Dave Winfield (.284, 41, 125) took home the MVP trophy.

After an interesting 1982, it is time to d-load version 1.60 and see how the pitchers fare. At least D'Acquisto and Randy Moffitt, two of this assn's odd statmakers, are both retiring this off-season.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/15/2007 3:51:23 PM)

Upon further review, I'm stuck with Moffitt and his superhero END of 1 for one more season. In real MLB, he was granted free agency, so he will stay with Houston. John D'Acquisto has "retired" following his Cy Young season.

It looks as though this assn will be put into the deep freeze for awhile. There are odd issues with pitcher recovery. I'm now using 1.60 and starting pitchers are making too many relief appearances. I guess this falls into the category of "be careful what you ask for[;)]", since reliever appearances are down.

I just can't, in good faith, continue an assn where starting pitchers are making relief appearances the day before their scheduled starts.

Now, it's on to a 2006 Atlanta Braves replay. I will manage the Braves and see if I can take them to the postseason and lose, just like Bobby Cox did from 1991-1993, and 1996-2005.

Although it may be a logistical nightmare, I plan to start every team with their ACTUAL opening-day rosters, then make roster moves for each team just as they happened in real MLB. I will choose "no injuries" and "no AI trades" so I can keep the day-to-day rosters accurate. I will just "demote" a player when they go on the DL in real-life, then "promote" them when they return to the roster. It will take a lot of effort to set this up, but should be fairly smooth once I get all of the roster moves into a calendar-type format.

As for this NL No Free Agency Assn, I'll probably play it out until the All-Star break, then put it into hibernation until the next major PS release or patch addressing the pitcher recovery issue.

Skipped over 1.61, then d-loaded the 1.62 patch. Starting pitchers seem to be completing more games, but are still making way too many relief appearances. Through the All-Star Break of 1983:

Pittsburgh's Bill Madlock leads all hitters with a .347 AVG. Montreal's Andre Dawson follows at .333. Atlanta's Bob Horner has 20 homers and 60 RBIs. Montreal's Tim Wallach has 16 homers. Horner and Dawson share the RBI lead with 60.

The Expos' Bill Gullickson is having a great season. Gully is 15-1 with a 1.75 ERA, leading the NL in both categories. St. Louis' Bob Forsch has a 1.80 ERA (9-1), and Pittsburgh's John Candelaria is at 1.96 (10-2). Along with Candelaria, Pittsburgh's Lee Tunnell (10-2, 2.30) has 10 wins to trail Gullickson by five. Steve Carlton paces the league in Ks with 119. Gullickson is on his heels with 118, surely headed for a Cy Young season.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/26/2007 5:01:23 PM)

1983 regular season complete.

Bill Madlock won the batting title at .322, followed by teammate Jim Morrison's .309 and Andre Dawson at .308. Rookie Darryl Strawberry took the HR and RBI titles with 32/100. Mike Schmidt and Jack Clark finished with 27 HRs. Dawson was second in RBI with 97.

LA's Fernando Valenzuela captured the ERA title at 2.22 (15-8). Other notables were Lee Tunnell (15-6, 2.43), Larry Christenson (8-11, 2.44), and John Candelaria (15-6, 2.44). Bill Gullickson tailed off a little in the second half, but still easily led the NL in victories (22-7, 2.58). Mario Soto of the Reds was 19-6 (2.98). Steve Carlton led in Ks with 219, followed by Valenzuela with 207 and Soto with 200.

The assn ran with version 1.62 from early May until the end of the season. I noticed some improvement in complete games, as three pitchers ended up with 7 and three others finished with 6. The reliever appearances were in line, as the league leader had 73. One issue still in need of a band-aid is relief appearances by starting pitchers. Too many of them are making relief appearances on the day before their scheduled starts. They will pitch one or two innings, then start the next day and do poorly.

Montreal should have an advantage in the series, as Cincy ace Mario Soto pitched on October 2nd. Although the series starts on October 7th, Soto is showing "Completely Exhausted" and 1%. The Reds send Bob Shirley (9-11, 3.73) to the mound against Bill Gullickson for the Expos.

Johnny Bench's solo homer in the top of the 8th broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Reds a 1-0 lead in the series. Bench's RBI single and Joe Morgan's sac-fly put the Reds on top 2-0 in the first inning. Montreal tied the score on RBI singles by Tim Raines in the fifth and seventh innings. Cincy reliever Rich Gale picked up the win. Jeff Reardon was charged with the loss (which I guess is better than being charged with armed robbery).

The Reds send lefty Joe Price (11-9, 2.80) to the mound. The Expos counter with veteran Steve Rogers (13-15, 3.86).

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/26/2007 5:32:27 PM)

Tony Perez blasted a pinch-hit three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Expos to a 7-4 win over the Reds, evening the series at a game apiece. Perez' blast, off Reds' reliever Charlie Puleo, broke a 4-4 tie and made a winner of Montreal reliever Tom Dixon. Bob James pitched the ninth and earned the save.

With the game tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh, a Tim Wallach throwing error gave Cincinnati a 4-3 lead. Wallach redeemed himself in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to tie the score.

In the eighth, Puleo struck out Manny Trillo, before allowing singles to Al Oliver and Chris Speier. Perez, batting for pitcher Dixon, homered to the opposite field. It was bittersweet for the 41-year-old Perez, who had spent his entire career with the Reds, before being traded to Montreal before the 1977 season.

The Montreal Expos proved to be rude visitors, as they broke out the heavy lumber in a 14-7 victory in game three. Montreal pounded out 19 hits, including 12 off Cincy ace Mario Soto, who lasted just 3 2/3 innings. Soto was charged with 6 earned runs.

For the Expos, Tim Wallach was 4-6 with 3 RBI, Andre Dawson was 3-4 withn 2 RBI, Tim Raines was 3-5 with 3 runs scored, Gary Carter was 3-6 with 2 RBI, and Chris Speier was 2-5 with 2 RBI. For the Reds, Johnny Bench swatted two home runs in a losing effort. Bench also had a sacrifice fly and ended up with 4 RBI.

Montreal starter Scott Sanderson picked up the win, allowing 3 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Charlie Lea pitched the final 3 2/3 innings.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/26/2007 8:37:49 PM)

Game Four: David Palmer (8-4, 2.45) vs Frank Pastore (16-8, 3.48).

The Cincinnati Reds evened the series at two games apiece with a 6-3 victory. Frank Pastore held Montreal to three runs on six hits over 8 innings. Joe Morgan drove in two with a double in the first. Dan Bilardello knocked a solo homer in the sixth. For Montreal, starter Dave Palmer lasted only 2 2/3 innings. He allowed 6 hits and 3 earned runs. Andre Dawson had a two-run homer for the Expos in the eighth.

In game five, Bill Gullickson and Bob Shirley will again take the mound.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/26/2007 9:37:53 PM)

.......or maybe they won't. Both Gullickson and Shirley are showing up as Completely Exhausted, at 8% and 10% recovery, respectively. It will be Rogers and Price on three days' rest. Both are "Feeling Good" at 82% and 78% respectively.

The commissioner is "Feeling [&:]" about the pitcher recovery at the moment.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/26/2007 9:53:31 PM)

Steve Rogers shut out the Reds on 5 hits as Montreal blanked Cincinnati 11-0. The Expos take a 3-2 series lead back to Canada.

Manny Trillo opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run single. Montreal plated another run on a Cesar Cedeno error to go up 3-0 early. Mike Vail's two-run double in the fifth made it 5-0. Trillo drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to make the score 6-0. Montreal tacked on five more runs in the ninth. Jerry White smacked a two-run homer, Rogers hit an RBI double, and Tim Raines drove in the final two runs with a double of his own. Cincy starter Joe Price took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in 2 1/3 innings.

In game six, Mario Soto and Scott Sanderson will take the mound.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/26/2007 10:04:13 PM)

Dave Collins singled up the middle, scoring Dan Driessen in the ninth with the game's only run as the Cincinnati Reds evened the series with the Montreal Expos at three games apiece.

Both starting pitchers were excellent. Mario Soto allowed only 3 hits in 7 innings, while striking out 7. Scott Sanderson allowed only 3 hits in 6 innings.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/26/2007 10:21:42 PM)

For the second straight season, the Montreal Expos suffered a shutout in game seven. Bob Shirley and Frank Pastore combined to scatter nine hits and the Cincinnati Reds captured the title with a 5-0 victory.

Dan Driessen opened the scoring with a solo homer in the 4th. Johnny Bench's sac-fly in the 6th made it 2-0 Reds. Cincinnati put the game away in the top of the 8th. Driessen drove in run number three with a sac-fly. Bench and Joe Morgan connected on back-to-back homers to account for the season's final scoring.

The Cubs' Leon "Bull" Durham took MVP honors for 1983. Durham batted .304, with 20 homers and 68 RBI. As expected, Montreal's Bill Gullickson won the Cy Young Award. Gullickson finished with a record of 22-7 with a 2.58 ERA.

motnahp -> RE: The NL No-Free Agency Assn (7/29/2007 4:14:43 PM)

This assn will be on hold for awhile, as I get into a 2006 Braves replay.
