Moreover, it wouldn't surprise me if Sidney-Melbourne arrivals were also shifted to one of unoccupied bases. Raverdave will be the one to know…

Whatever, Sydney was taken around 10th April so I belive most of the reinforcements that matter (INF units) should have arrived by then.

The Reason that Sydney was so lightly defended was due to the fact that all of the Aussie troops were at the FRONT LINE, which is PM, Darwin and I have one Division in NZ. After Honda took Noumea the logical conclusion was that he was going to march on NZ to cut the US-Aust SLOC, so I loaded the troops out of Melbourne and Sydney to help defend NZ. I guessed wrong and Sydney has fallen. I certainly don't see myself as being "incompetent".......but I have been out smarted !

If I remember my history correctly, Prime Minister Curtin fought hard to get the 6th and 7th AIF Divs back from North Africa to defend the home country. General Blamey initially used the 7th AIF Div to defend 'The Brisbane Line', should the NE coast of Oz be invaded by the Japs. It was only the pressure put on PM by the Japs advancing over the Owen Stanley Mountains that got one Brigade of said Div moved to PM in July 42 to support 30th Militia Bde. With the stalemate at Gaudalcanal late in 42 the balance of the 7th was moved to PM to start the joint Oz/US advance on Buna. The Japanese Strategic Goal (in April 42) was to cut supply lines to Oz from the US by capturing PM, Solomons, Fiji and Samoa to force a capitulation. If that didn't work the IJA were considering plans to launch an invasion in '43. If the Allied player doesn't adequately defend strategic locations then thats their lookout. If the Jap player lands on the SE coast of Oz - with their flank protected by bases in the Solomons and New Caledonia - then I see that as an acceptable extention of historical Japanese aims. Fortunately Midway changed that. It seems to me, in this game, their 'Midway' off Nomuea went the other way and allowed the invasion of Oz to proceed. Well thats how I see it. There was no warning that Honda (and who would have expected it?) would shift his interest towards Australia. Granted I would have expected it AFTER NZ had fallen but this was not the case. I think that Honda will find it Melbourne a bit harder to knock over as there are three Divisions and one Brigade tasked with defending it. Also he has to worry about the 6 divisions that are marching towards Sydney from the north. In taking Sydney and Noumea (as well as his assault on India which btw I gutted the RN in it's defence) Honda has lost a total of 102 ships with well over 50% of these APs. Inaddition to that I estimate that he has another 50 to 100 or so APs in various states of damage. His ability to continue moving large amounts of men and supplies has been crippled. It is going to be interesting to see how he can keep up his supply needs to Australia and the South Pacific.

Cool! Since we're opening the decks, here are my thaughts. 1. APs - no problem there. My major troop movements have been completed. In India, the losses were only slow AKs and APs. In Sydney operation I have so far lost 2 DDs and a PC. Sydney harbour is huge + small repair yard so the damaged ships are reparing nicely. 2. You do NOT want to march on Sydney and you do NOT want to defend Melbourne. Take it from me[;)] As I said, little Raver WILL learn Japanese language as obligatory in primery school[:D]

If war was so predictable and military strategy infallible - then war would be redundant.
