tc237 -> New Unit and Weapon types? (12/5/2006 6:05:24 PM)

Can we add new Unit and Weapon types?
I've tried adding a new unit using the AcwUnit.txt, inserted a new line (27), used the same values as an existing unit.
It doesn't show up in the unit production list.
Is there anything else that needs changed added?

What about for a new weapon types?

ericbabe -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/5/2006 6:43:50 PM)

Adding new unit types and weapons to this list isn't possible, as these require quite a bit of hard-coding in the game.

Gil R. -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/6/2006 1:37:35 AM)

Not to mention additional graphics.

What are you trying to add? If we like the idea, we might be able to add it in a patch.

tc237 -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/6/2006 3:50:02 AM)

Actually can't remember what the original idea was [8|]...
I was gonna try and just make more classes of river gunboats, ships etc...
I'll try changing some of the "uber-weapons", since there were only 4-5 ever made, and for me personnally I won't ever play with those. Not sure exactly what I'm gonna do yet though [8D].....

How about the Riverine Ironclads? The ones that knocked out Ft. Henry, and ran the Vicksburg Batteries? Unlike the South's few efforts (the Arkansas comes to mind) these were built in enough numbers to actually make a "squadrons" since the game likes to deploy naval units in 10's.

The Gunboats unit in the game represents them.

funny just the other day I was watching a show about these, and was shocked at what they looked like

alot of them looked just like the Merrimac, and then they mentioned that a lot of the gunboats were really captured CSA boats

now I got no info on how many is alot or even a few, but it was a interesting show

Ironclad -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/7/2006 7:59:51 PM)

Yes, I'm reading a book on the civil war navies and am surprised at the number of captured Confederate ships utilised by the US Navy. They include one that became the flagship for a major US Riverine flotilla.

tc237 -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/7/2006 10:01:45 PM)

I've been reading some on Union River Ironclads also (for a TC2M mod), that's what got me thinking about adding more variations/class types to this game.
Guess it can still be done by the Weapons upgrade.

The Union River Ironclads of the Cairo/City class did sort of look like the Merrimac.
They were built in Carondolet, MO and Mound City, IL from September 1861 - October 1861, and were Commisioned and in operation by January 1862. There were a total of 7 built: USS Cairo, Carondolet, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Cincinnatti, Mound City, St Louis(Baron De Kalb) at a cost of $89,000 each (what's that in game $ [;)])

These boats were used as the "strike force/fort busters" and were not used for daily patrolling/convoy escort etc...
That task was left up to the almost 100 tin/timberclad gunboats built during the war.

Ironclad -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/7/2006 11:31:10 PM)

Formidable ships given the opposition. The one that sticks in my mind is the Carondelet for doing the first run past Island No 10. But all of them were heavily engaged through most of the river conflicts.

If you are doing a list, there were also a number of US river monitors introduced from 1863 onwards.

Are you reading Blue & Gray Navies, by Spencer C. Tucker? Just started reading this book myself.
Seems there was a USS Carondolet and a CSS Carondelet [:D]

I just got the 4 Osprey books on Civil War River Ironclads and Gunboats (buy 3 get the 4th free[;)]). Initially purchased while working on a TC2M Ship mod, but they'll do to get this game straight.

were are the admirals in this game?

nmleague -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/20/2006 6:14:15 PM)

Back in the late 70's early 80's a company named Yaquianto (sp) did a board game called Ironclads, and I think a sequal.  Always thought they were great games and would have liked to see someone do a high quality graphics computer version of them.  I think I still have both versions.

Be interesting to compare the price and weight of iron in each of these with the same figure for the MONITOR. Want to bet the game "costs" are wildly skewed?

christof139 -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (12/23/2006 4:52:56 AM)

Similar to the City Class, or Pook's Turtle's or Ead's Boats, were the Essex (small), the Benton (large), and the Eastport (large). the Eastport was a Confederate ship being converted to an ironclad and I believe wa captured by the Ynaks in Eastport, Tn.

I think Eric mantioned that he had Paul H. Silverstone's book "Civil War Navies, 1855-83" of the US Navy Warship Series. I have this book, and it is the only book a person needs for excellent descriptions of the ships in the ACW. Osprey also did a good job with plenty of paintings and schematics, but Silverstone's book is THE book for stats including armaments used by the ships at different times. Many photos in Silverstone's book.

I have to get this game, but I won't get it before X-mas now. I had to rebuild my 'compooter' to faster specs with more RAM and a better video card etc.

Have a great holiday Season and good to meet you all, Chris, a Yankee from Detroit
(a past friend of mine once owned a small apartment building located on the site where the 24th Michigan Volunteer Inf. Regt. of the Western Iron Brigade initially camped and drilled while mustering. Just a neat thing. Intially there was an Eastern Iron Brigade, of which I believe the 14th Brooklyn Zouaves or Chasseurs were part of, and that Brigade was I believe Phelp's Brigade during the 1862 Maryland Campaign. This was known back then, but there was no animosity of the two Brigades having the same unofficial title, and both brigades issued lapel pins that looked very similar. They fought side by side at South Mountain and Antietam, and at Gettysburg also I do believe. Another neat tidbit. The 4th Michigan (Zouaves) handily defested Wheat's Louisiana Special Battalion of Zouaves, the Tigers, I do believe early in the war in Virginia methinks. There is a good re-enactor site of the 4th Michigan with a good amount of info., and humor.

I'm Looking at getting this game, been Civil War Freak since I was 10. I still have bothe the Ironclads Games from Yaquinto. I had asked year or so ago if Matrix would do a game like that. It was made for computer. orginal game had a billion dice rolls if you had any fleet operations. After movement gun fires to hit, where to hit penetration then damage. Critical hits and all kinds of modifiers for crew exper, range, armour, shell or solid, powder charge. It was a great tactical game.

As far as opening my eyes to just how many CSA ironclads they had (a bunch) and how badly they were used. (Arkansas, doing so well running the USA fleet abve Vicksburge, and keeping the Fleet at bay there and then to be used a support ship on a bad land campaign and to be blown up after being run aground on a mud bank.) Some of the power these vessels was enormous considering where they were. The Arbermale sp. Was really feared because no USA ironclads could get in the area to operate and a ship with only 4 gun 2 of which were almost anti personel terrorize that area and caused the Union to abondon conquerd areas. Then the poor Atlanta that met a twin turreted monitor on her maiden fight and was knocked out after about 6 shots by the monitor and was capture and used by the north extensivly.

If the south was able to get thier 2 big ironclads finished at new Orleans Farragute might have not been able to run the forts. That is one reaon why he attacked so early. That and the high river water made the chain blocking the river vulnerble.

thanks for listening.

christof139 -> RE: New Unit and Weapon types? (1/19/2007 5:58:26 AM)

Yeah, the South needed good staem engines for their Ironclads more than anything else. They preferred to use their own made and excellent 6 to 7 or so inch Brooke Rifles, that were very good, the equal of anything being made at the time. The 4 guns on the Albemarle included Brooke Rifles, and they may all have been of this type, just trying to remember off-the-top-of-my-head without going to a book or other reference.

The South had a few partially and/or lightly armored Gunboats too, such as the CSS baltic at Mobile, the Barataria and Diana in Louisiana, and also the CSS Missouri, built in Shreveport, Louisiana with a center wheel like the Ead's Turtles. It leaked bad, never saw combat, could barely manage to move upstream against the current in the Red River, had only 3 guns but at least one was an 11-inch Dahlgren I do believe, and was only used as a transport and escort ABOVE the Falls and Rapids of the Red River at Alexandria, never seeing combat, but I like this leaky boat. It is a 'what if'.

Neat stuff. And lots of neat ship to ship and ship to shore actions in the Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas areas.

Chris
