Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:25:59 PM)

oh boy

I have never seen that !, in fact, I never have seen France go to war

hmmm, didn't you say, Texis dropped out of the war ? that could be interesting, as that is where the French will come from

only thing I would really offer on your game, you started your advance too soon, your troops were really not ready yet, roger on taking what you can, but don't go into action if you can avoid it

good AAR

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:30:55 PM)

Hehe, yep, France joined the war after Texas had stood down -- but France is still deploying in Texas. So far I see two or three French brigades there. And yep, I started my offensive too soon. Hehe, I was eager to fight! [:D]

So have I set some sort of record -- first player to get France *and* Britain to declare war at once? Look at the bright side: I save 60 money or more a turn on diplomacy.

Anyway, my eagerness to fight continues, so I besiege Fort Henry mostly because I'm curious to see how gunboats work. Whee, fun! The boats pack a big artillery punch. And so far the CSA has not sent in any force to stop me. For those new to FoF, this shot depicts my besieging infantry, the defending fort, my "siegeworks" (formed when you start a siege), and my gunboats.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:35:18 PM)

Anyway, I get down to business in the famous Civil War Battle of Brooklyn! LMAO! I'm loving this game. [:D] For once I'm on defense, I guess because I'm defending my city there? Also, I got to choose the type of battlefield involved, and I had some element of surprise, all of which was fun. I chose an urban landscape because I recently acquired the Urban Fighting tech.

The CSA rushes at me and does grab one of three victory hexes it needs. But I rally my troops and make a stand at the second hex, Woodville. And this time I actually do have one unit of arty. To bring their full 600 damage to bear, I guess they have to be right next to the enemy, which puts them at risk, as they are in this screenshot. But wow, when they hit their target, they hit hard -- in one case, causing 600 casualties to the Magnolia Brigade.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:37:56 PM)

And finally, in the late summer of 1862, I win my first major land battle of the Civil War, holding 2 of the 3 victory hexes and routing the enemy. In fact, the enemy has disappeared from the main map, just as my Army of Arkansas did. Is this by design?

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:39:03 PM)

I win but I take more casualties than the enemy. Of course, that has been known to happen in real warfare.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:40:25 PM)

Another neat thing about FoF is its fluid Victory Point system. Your VPs go up and down depending on whether you've won major battles recently, modeling the political ebb and flow of national will to fight. I had been down 12 points before the Battle of Brooklyn. Not so now!

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:42:23 PM)

At last I have a little breathing room, so I turn my attention to governors' requests for improvements, which have been piling up while I've been pumping out military units to fend off the invaders. I have a backlog of about a dozen requests. Here are a few of the items I start to build.

[image]local://upfiles/7808/8DE7F69712E842AD9A14DC6647A946D7.jpg[/image]

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:43:55 PM)

The most mysterious governor's request is Iowa's request for a Naval Shipyard. Hmm, do they need ironclads to patrol the cornfields out there? [:'(] But maybe the shipyard is for making gunboats to patrol the river. I decide to hold off on it.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:45:57 PM)

So it's now late September 1862, and the next big event on the horizon is the election in November. I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out.

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:46:55 PM)

LOL

you got a interesting war going on, man never seen both sides in the minus either :)

I may of missed but how did the troops get to brooklen ? by sea ??

if they sea landed, they not really got a chance to retreat, so yea, right now that is how it is designed

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 10:48:39 PM)

Yup, they sea landed, and that's what I figured -- they were cut off and had nowhere to run.

Hard Sarge -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/9/2006 11:13:37 PM)

Roger

sea landings right now are seen as a do or die

genie144 -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/12/2006 12:43:37 AM)

Well???  Come on, you can't start it without finishing.  I like the oves you have made towards the end.  While I can't condone your move towards Arkansas, I do appreciate reading the campaign.  I think it is more interesting now that you have a challenge on your hands  :)

Sam

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/14/2006 7:11:40 AM)

Have no fear, I'm still playing. :) I hope to post another installment tomorrow.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:27:38 AM)

As October 1862 opens, my Union forces are still struggling to put down this rebellion. I did succeed in repelling the invaders (British and CSA) from New York, but my own offensive in Arkansas died an ugly death. Now I'm besieging Fort Henry and, apart from that, trying to grow an army in more orderly fashion. I'm also focused on keeping my gubernatorial allies in power come November.

Those governors are important not least because a number of them now support my research efforts. As autumn leaves fall in the nation's capitol, I get word that we've researched the crucial Balloon technology. I'm not quite sure what balloons will do for me, but they sound more fun than they other options, so I go for 'em. [:'(]

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:31:47 AM)

In late October, the Brits again descend on Rochester. They have attacked New York, Rochester, Buffalo -- but never Massachusetts. My theory is that they're Red Sox fans. So maybe they're not all bad. That doesn't stop me from sending many men to shoot them.

By contrast, the CSA has just landed a new force in Massachusetts, earning my never-ending wrath. Shepley's Corps is dispatched to deal with them.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:34:27 AM)

Hard Sarge was interested to learn that I've managed to bring both the French and the Brits into the war against me. I thought I'd record for posterity what the mighty French army looks like (so far, at least). I see...one lonely brigade in Arkansas. The Foreign Legion, peut-etre? I'm thinking I need to restaff my Army of Arkansas and kick some Parisian patootie.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:37:39 AM)

I've actually started *gasp* upgrading my weapons! Real FoF players no doubt do this at, say, the beginning of the war. Me, I wait til November 1862 to do any serious upgrading.

In defense of my incompetence, I should point out that I never reload save games. I figure that's one feature the AI never gets to use, so I play by the same rules it does. Besides, it's more fun to play when you know that disaster really will hurt. :P Anyway, here's a look at a sample upgrade:

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:39:31 AM)

Mwuhaha, I'm starting to get good at this. Not only do I crush the British incursion in Rochester (in the Second Battle of Rochester), but I even get three brigades to surrender.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:42:54 AM)

What's more, it's early November '62, and that means it's election time! I put on my stovepipe hat and give lots of speeches. Despite (or perhaps because of) this, some of my friends lose their bids for re-election, but I'm still pleased with the outcomes. The Democrats who are elected are generally friendly to me. And, best of all, the one guy who really gave me a hard time, nasty Thomas Hicks of Maryland, has been summarily ousted by a much friendlier Democrat. Yay!

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:46:27 AM)

Here's a look at the new political landscape. Darker plaques indicate a governor who's not happy with his President. Unfortunately, I forgot to photograph the big kahuna in Texas, but suffice to say his plaque is verrrry dark. He doesn't seem too pleased with Mr. Davis. (Texas stood down from the war once the South emancipated.) My guess is that all those French foreign legionnaires are annoying the Texans.

Incidentally, I'm a tad annoyed that the Governor Berry of New Hampshire isn't more pleased with me. I built him all sorts of stuff. Ingrate.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 2:49:36 AM)

A gentle snow falls across New England as December arrives. Shepley slowly moves to confront the latest CSA invasion force. I'm hoping to give the Confederates a rather nasty New Year's present in Boston.

Erik Rutins -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 4:01:28 AM)

Brilliant AAR, Grotius, great to see such an "au naturale" rendition of play. I've played many game (including FoF) this way when I've just opened the box and wanted to get started. Keep up the great work, I'm sure everyone's interested to see how you'll get out of this pickle.

jonreb31 -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 5:44:29 AM)

Keep it up, I can't believe I'm interested in what is going to happen. [:D]

genie144 -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/15/2006 6:44:11 PM)

Yeah come on - am curious if your designs on arkansas are going to be put on a shelf or if you will continue.  Personally I think you should glass the place over, but hey thats just me :)

Sam

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/16/2006 1:22:18 AM)

Oh, I'm determined to make Arkansas MINE MINE MINE. I may lose the danged war, but I want Little Rock. I'm building Siege Artillery so I can, you know, besiege it. :)

marecone -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/16/2006 3:21:24 AM)

Great stuff. [sm=00000613.gif]

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/19/2006 6:15:02 AM)

A New Year arrives, and with it new hope that I will get my act together and quell this annoying insurrection. But I fear the AAR's title is all too apt.

Anyway, the French ring in the New Year by sending more troops to Texas. Joy.

Grotius -> RE: AAR of Incompetence! (12/19/2006 6:17:10 AM)

To counter that, I think I need a good leader in the West. A new general has just emerged, some guy named Sherman. He keeps pointing out that Tennessee is the only thing between our western forces and Atlanta. I keep pointing out that the CSA's Kentucky Army is also standing between our forces and Atlanta.

Anyway, I send Sherman west to get him out of my hair. Maybe he'll make a name for himself.
