spence -> Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 1:31:40 AM)

Just another obscure ship that served in the Pacific. Anybody got a name?

The Coast Guard Cutter Haida, WPG-45.

You probably should've renamed the picture...

Bah - you discovered my secret. I was trying to impress everyone with my esoteric nautical knowledge... [;)][:'(]

Cool pics, Spence. [:)]

USS Owasco...

Ursa MAior -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 2:01:50 AM)

Dont tell me!

Did you also download he picture?[;)][:D]

spence -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 3:23:28 AM)

It was never the USS OWASCO. It was always the USCGC OWASCO. Beaucoup guns for a CG Cutter (4 x 5"/38, 8 x 40mm, 8 20mm, 4 Y-guns, 2 DC racks). The class never quite made it into the War coming on line in the latter half of 1945. Shortly after the war most of the armament was removed.

ctangus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 3:32:38 AM)

Here's a nice, higher-res, photo of her:

ctangus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 3:33:33 AM)

Slightly off-topic, since she didn't see service in the Pacific, but here's another Coast Guard Cutter that saw service in WWII. Can anyone name her?

Edit: extra-special bonus points if you can name where the photo was taken.

spence -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 3:55:11 AM)

165 ft class...CGC Escanaba, Tahoma, Algonquin, or Comanche maybe. Not the Onondaga cause that one did serve in the Pacific in WWII (pictured below)

ctangus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 4:12:57 AM)

I'm impressed. Yep - USCGC Escanaba.

rtrapasso -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 4:17:15 AM)

ok - now where was it taken?

The pic looks overexposed - but is that snow on the hills and dock? i'll hazard a guess that this is the Aleutians.

EDIT: Whoops - you said NOT in the Pacific (D'OH!) Let's change the guess to Newfoundland (and if pressed further - let's say St. John's)

ctangus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 4:20:14 AM)

Aleutians - no.

Aleutians - no.

Whoops - see correction above - let's try Newfoundland...

ctangus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 4:34:13 AM)

Nope - not Newfoundland, though that's a little bit closer.

I have to say that the location of the pic is quite obscure, and frankly doesn't have much to do with WWII. I mentioned it only due to personal interest - I have family from the area & lost a 2nd cousin-thriced removed (or something like that) on the Escanaba.

spence -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 5:26:56 AM)

Maine coast then...Bar Harbor perhaps...picture is taken before WWII cause Escanaba got mined or torpedoed.

Michigan?

Johnny Sheff -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 2:13:20 PM)

Iceland? Greenland?

ctangus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 2:33:12 PM)

Extra special bonus points for Robert!

That's Escanaba at her home - the great war-time port of Grand Haven, Michigan. She was lost in the Atlantic '43 with only two survivors and it was fairly devastating to the town - annual memorial services are still held for her there.

Spence's pics reminded me of her.

spence -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 6:17:24 PM)

What brought these ships in my mind was they (the Haida and Onandaga) were both included in CHS but as Taney Class (Secretary Class really). I knew they weren't that so I went looking and found out what type they really were. The Haida had some serious anti-sub armament it appears. CGC Onandaga was not so impressive. Incidentally the photo of Haida is labelled as being from 1945 but it's not. By then the 5"/51s were gone and it had 3"/50 AA guns in their place.

jwxspoon -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 7:58:39 PM)

Seems like I recall in CHS the Haida has some ungodly amount of armor, like 500 rating or something.

500! that'd be better than the Iowa! No not quite that high, but very impressive : 50 deck, 90 belt and 100 tower. So about the same as an Atlanta class CLAA.

Terminus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/14/2006 11:43:20 PM)

Its armour ratings are correct in scenario 155 at least...

spence -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/15/2006 12:25:18 AM)

The Secretary Class cutters were built with 3/4 inch shell plating (double than your typical DDs shell plating), shipboard legend having it that this was a Rooseveltian effort to promote the US steel industry.  I know that the ones I served on had an easier time in sea ice because of the extra steel but I can say for sure that it was all mild steel and there was not one mm of armor anywhere on the ship except in the old flak jackets we had for some of the .50 cal crew.

As far as I could find, the Owasco commissioned in May, 1945. Hmmm... If only I could find some more complete data... and a ship side...

spence -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/15/2006 2:21:31 AM)

Try this...info on every CG cutter ever at CG Historian site. I suppose Owasco and her sisters would have been available had Japan held out a couple of months more.

Terminus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/15/2006 2:43:37 AM)

Thanks... I think I'll include her, just for kicks. Doesn't say anything about armour here, so can we assume that it didn't have any?

spence -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/15/2006 2:49:12 AM)

No armor I'm sure...doubt it even had the double thick shell plating of other purpose-built CG cutters but I'm not absolutely positive about that.

Terminus -> RE: Another obscure ship (12/15/2006 2:50:40 AM)

Hmm, didn't it say it was designed for ice ops? Oh well, that probably doesn't qualify as armour. It'll be 0/0/0.
