marky -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 3:48:09 PM)

however wat would be more on topic is Silent Hunter 4, which allows u to face...

YEP!

the IJN!

[:D]

which will also of course force u to deal with the nefarious mk 14 in its early war dayz[:(]

Terminus -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 3:50:21 PM)

Seeing as how the thing is infected with StarForce, I'd say it's probably safe to assume that not a lot of people around here play it...[8|]

marky -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 3:58:34 PM)

starforce?

Speedysteve -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 4:09:52 PM)

I had it but haven't played it.

T - remind me again of SF?

Is SH4 going to have it?

Terminus -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 4:14:53 PM)

StarForce is a much-maligned copy protection program that installs itself on your PC without asking for permission or even given notification about itself. It has been known to cause severe damage to peoples' computers, including making it impossible to burn CD's and DVD's, and it's exceptionally difficult to get rid of, because it buries itself really deeply into your system. Even if you uninstall a StarForce "protected" game, this trojan (that is what it is) stays on your computer.

huggarn -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 4:33:46 PM)

It will even stop some games from running etc. Its a real p in the proverbial a!

marky -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 4:42:07 PM)

Terminus -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 4:45:03 PM)

No. That's the whole point.

btaft -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 6:38:37 PM)

I played it when it first came out and was pretty happy with it.  I stopped when it seemed to get monotonous and when the air cover became too cumbersome and accurate.  It basically became a conflict between having long transit distances to arrive at the patrol zone and not being able to effectively time compress due to the intense air umbrella.  This might be realistic but it makes for a lot of boring times staring at the map :-(

Aside from that when a convoy has been encountered then it is worth it's weight in gold.  I understand that SH4 is hoping to correct alot of this by having several small op areas as opposed to the whole atlantic and enhancing the dynamic campaign with non-patrol oriented orders such as picking up down flyers etc.

No -- hopefully. Ubi has dropped Starforce from their more recent games.

Redan -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 9:16:30 PM)

I played SH years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It was fun. It was actually more fun to try to save a badly damaged boat and get her back to Pearl, than it was to sink Kongo. Original Silent Hunter was one of the great games-- just a notch below PacWar....

Terminus -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 9:19:17 PM)

Speaking of dinosaur submarine games, I played Silent Service II back in the day. That was a very cool game; aaaah, Microprose...

Speedysteve -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 9:48:52 PM)

T. I was just thinking of this. I loved that game.............

Terminus -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 9:52:31 PM)

It was superb. [8D]

Speedysteve -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 9:56:42 PM)

I clearly remembering receivigg this game on Christmas day all those many years ago and reading the instruction manual as we were on the way to my Step-Uncles house...........

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/15/2006 10:59:29 PM)

There is a new version of the excellent Grey Wolves Supermod ready to see the light. Check out the 'Grey Wolves' and 'GWX' threads at http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=195

According to Wikipedia, Ubisoft dropped Starforce when customers complained.

tocaff -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/16/2006 2:41:46 AM)

The old SSI, SSG, Microprose and others were loads of fun.  I used to love playing "Battle of Britain" on my C64 in the age of dinos.

Terminus -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/16/2006 2:48:38 AM)

Microprose had soooooo many classics. It was probably the finest games company of its day...

Pirates, Railroad Tycoon, Gunship, F-15, F-19, Civilization, Master of Orion, Master of Magic, Darklands, Silent Service... Where's my DOS emulator...?[:D]

multiplayer for SH3 is MUCH better than the campaign, u can go up against anything u want, and its always different in 1 way or another

I remember playing Darklands and one other, the title I can't remember, a secret service/spy type game. [:'(][:'(]

Terminus -> RE: slightly OT - Silent Hunter 3 (12/16/2006 3:59:40 AM)

Covert Action... Forgot to mention that one. It had a place wiretap/defuse bomb section where you had to assemble a circuit "puzzle" to succeed. Inspired. Loved it...

Thanks for this info. I was unaware of Starforce. My SO's computer has been messed up for over a year and I knew it had something to do with a game she had played. We found and ran the Starforce removal utility and her machine now works much better.

This is the first forum for a game I've ever been on, so I wasn't aware of Starforce.

Bill
