bostonrpgmania -> Why not Wii matrix? (12/29/2006 8:42:03 AM)

I purchased wii ..impulse buy
I was at the Toyrus yesterday and found that they received 15 that day and only 3 left
While I was asking my wife about buying it (less than one minute) two were gone
I thought that I had to buy it (dunno why)
I joined the line and bought the last one and the last copy of zelda

I am impressed by wii sports
I was not impressed by zelda's graphic (it is basically the same as game cube)
but I am IMPRESSED by its game play

Wii is all about controller innovation. I am thinking about lego starwars on Wii
Sweet

Also I think now is the time for Matrix seriously thinking about entering console market. Not 360 nor ps3 but Wii

Thinking about playing korsun pocket or battels in normandy on Wii with that remote. I will be feeling like a real general in situation room
with optical..pointer...oh seet

AFAIK, it's basically the sam hardware inside. So no big graphic improvements should be seen.
Biggest advantage : Wii is 100% compatible with the game cube even with the controllers.

I've seen video of people controlling their computer mouse with a Wii. It does not seem so easy.
But I'd like to give it a try.

OTOH, the Nintendo DS, with its two screens (one tactile) would be a nice target as well.
Going mobile might be a good differentiation factor.

Cheers,

JeF.

Matrix Games already has one hand held title to their credit, why not become the company that finally banishes the old complaint that consoles don't like our wargames much.

I'm getting Panzer Tactics when it comes out on the DS. Wargames CAN be done, it's just we need a publisher that WANTS it to be done.

It's not impossible, just requires the interest.

As for Zelda, anyone that is really interested can find out that the Zelda title actually was made with GC in mind, they merely held it back so they could offer it on the Wii.
Lame graphics, only if you think Nintendo was ever interested in competing with Sony and MS. They aren't. They make graphics to suit THEIR requirements.
And it appears they are doing fine meeting the needs of THEIR customers.

ROFL...that'll be the day...Decisive Battles Series on the Wii[&o]. I could break out laughing just reading the manual: a) Rotate arm a full 360 degrees firmly for an overrun attack. b) For Travel mode swing arm wildly from left to right[X(]. c) To entrench grab your crotch and go Ah-Hee-Hee[8|].
Sick...

ravinhood -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 3:36:11 AM)

I really don't see why a paddle/gamepad wouldn't work just as well as a mouse for playing wargames on a console. Same basic principles left right up down and the inbetweens. Hotkeys could be set to the gamepad as well like next unit or previous unit. Everything right there at your fingertips instead of having to be a typist and knowing every key on a keyboard. Shift + button could be as simple as holding down one of the gamepad buttons on the frontend with one hand (left hand preferred) and then pressing any one of the other 7 buttons. Gamepads could also be enhanced to have 8 buttons instead of 4 on the main face for added hotkey value. I'd switch in a NY minute cause I'm just tired of all the new this and new that required to play new this on a PC. Upgrade upgrade upgrade for the PC, it's always time to upgrade. Five minutes after a new hardware piece is released for the pc it's time to upgrade...lol Not to mention then Matrixgames would have to go retail again since we all know you can't direct download console games....or can you? lol

TheHellPatrol -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 4:39:29 AM)

[:D]I agree with you there...PC Upgrading! You know how many PC's i have in the garage, closet etc...?[:@] I AM sick of it, and my latest Uber-Laptop with(at this very moment[8|]) all the latest stuff will most likely be my next to last PC purchase. But the Wii? Swinging your arms around etc... What would the neighbors think?[X(]. I'm only 44 but i'm too old for this new crud...IPOD, MP3, Damn my friggin' cell phone takes pictures, has TV, radio and Paris Hiltons phone # all included. I had to read a "book" to use it the first day just to call my Wife to say my phone broke and i'll be home an hour later as i need to go to the mall and exchange/upgrade[&o].

Jakerson -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 5:00:18 AM)

What comes to remake of old game there is deep danger of losing money (for license fees) if you use idea from old game too directly. If you make a borderline remake that is not licensed you could face court suit witch in wordiest case bankrupt of you small developing team. Fact is that poor developers can't afford paying license fees so it is financially and to avoid legal risks better to make totally independent new game and never refer other company trademarks or games.

ravinhood -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 5:25:43 AM)

Heh you want to compare Hell? I have 4 c64's 4 floppy drives for them, two monitors, two amiga 500's with a state of the art 40mb hard-drive ;) lol, a 486sx25, a P166, gave a PII away or rather ex-wife gave it away, two Amd 450's, Amd 1ghz, 1 Intel 2400 and 1 Amd 3200 (latest), video cards? Gah just start from the 16 bit tnt and work your way up I probably have it. Sound cards has been a little better. Just a few Creative 8bit/16bit sound blasters (been using that Plat Gamer 5.1 Live for a long time now) and 1 recent Audigy 64 or is it 32 hell I don't know I don't even have it installed. lol OS's? Well of course all the way from 3.1 to Windows XP, even tried that one inbetween Win98se and XP...I don't recall it's name atm, it was such short lived. I wonder what all that adds up to over the years?

I think console gaming would have been cheaper. lol Considering a 5 year lifespan of one console and being able to rent and/or get games bargain bin a lot sooner. Problem is no real decent wargames. It's like I said though, if the wargaming industry moved to console I would be much happier. I'm 50 btw and I guess I just take to technology much faster than most my age or heh even your age. I'm a piddlier, I'll piddle with something until I figure out how to use it. I don't think I ever read an instruction manual for vcr's, dvd's, cdroms, stereos, etc. etc. I just piddle with them and they always seem to work, though I might not know all the advantages they actually have. One time though I was piddling with these buttons at the top of my phone thinking they were quick dial buttons and oh about 10 minutes after piddling with one button about 5 police cars were outside my house. Heh, turns out it was a direct 911 button. ;)

TheHellPatrol -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 6:07:14 AM)

[:D]ROFL...Come out with your hands up! We got 'em Chief...the infamous Piddler[:D]. I've donated a few dinosaurs over the years Packard Bell w/32MG card...Wow[8|]...i couldn't get Panzer General running lol. My sons' XBOX360? Now that i could live with: Comfy chair, pipe/cigar, wireless remote and Wargame of choice on a HUGE Plasma TV (screw reading glasses). Ahhh, to sleep...perchance to dream. Aye, there's the rub[;)].

ravinhood -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 6:11:37 AM)

I bet we could read the FONT on a HUGH Plasma TV screen also, and pdf manuals wouldn't be so bad then. lol My eye doctor asked me which I preferred for my next pair of glasses....Pepsi or Coke! haha

Lol you also gave me a vision of a Juke Box console system. Where you could put many console games into the case and then use your remote to select which one you wanted to play.

My thoughts exactly! My eye doctor told me, after 10+ years of PC-ing, "didn't you know PC monitors damage the cornea and you need a special filtered lens for "PC reading" glasses"?[X(]. Should have changed Doctors sooner eh? Of course, drinking a fifth of Jack Daniels at the Pub every day damages the Liver and Pancreas...that i learned[8|]. Switching habits doesn't always pay off[sm=00000007.gif].

ravinhood -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 6:47:39 AM)

I've been computer gaming since 1982 and probably sit closer to the monitors than should be allowed. It's really not my closeup vision that is impaired. I just can't see a damn thing more than 2ft in front of me very good without glasses. And these new 4 font manuals and pdf files lol are starting to mess with my closeup vision. My gawd I don't think a rabbit could read some of this print. I'll tell yah what works just as good as glasses though and my whole family laughs at them, but, I got me a pair of these FLY-EYE glasses. The ones with many small holes in them and I can see better with these things on than most eyeglasses. You can actually simulate the effect by just making a very tiny hole when you close your index finger and look thru it....try it I bet you can read anything and at distance or close up. ;) To focus you allow the hole to get bigger or smaller...it's sounds rediculous but it does work.

TheHellPatrol -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 7:11:38 AM)

[X(]Hmmm, that's a bummer. Only my ability to read print has been affected, and every two to three years i'm told i'll need a bump on my precription glasses. On the other hand, my doc was amazed at my distance vision and stated i was "well above average"[&o]<knocks wood>. I guess i inherited that from my Mother (God rest her soul) who at 80, before finally losing her 5 year battle with Chemo<cough> err...Cancer, could read without glasses and see a bluejay etc. from a mile away. The joys of aging never cease to amaze me[sm=Crazy-1271.gif].

Charles2222 -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/30/2006 7:56:31 AM)

Oh come on your console communists, you know good and well that none of these wargames come out in very good shape out of the chute, so just how satisfied will you be with a buggy console game? Or if not that, with one that has horrid inaccuracies? Consoles don't even come close. Maybe in the days when software was less buggy it might had been feasible, but in this day these companies have got sucked in the beta midset as far as releases go.

Oh sorry, I didn't realize consoles had any sort of internet hookup these days. I abhor consoles so much I tend to forget that the newer ones may well be able to do that. How would you modify the core game though? Would you have to have a new executable or would you already have an original executable on disc and then edit it with the patch?

I was talking about the possibility. For example, using Wii internet, you can purchase old nintendo game by downloading it.
It may be technically possible to implement patch which may reside on ram or system (it has hard drive inside. So technically it may be possible to save some files there) to correct for several minor bugs
or maybe they can add few more maps
HOwwever you maybe right that there cannot major that could affect core gameplay but same is true for PC I think

[X(]You been hiding under a rock?[;)] Seriously, i didn't know either until i bought my son an XBOX360...you can download games, patches and even upgrades to make XBOX games compatible![X(] If you don't want to pay for the extra service(dsl) you can go to the Microsoft XBOX360 site and burn or order an upgrade disc.

Charles2222 -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/31/2006 8:54:00 AM)

No hiding under a rock here, rather learning quite a few years back that consoles weren't condusive to anything resembling serious thought; such as wargames, so why keep up with them. I found over time that I would rather think than react. I don't happen to have any kids, so to get one would be purely for me and since I don't see a point, it's useless. I understand somebody could be like me, and then buy one for the kids and succumb disgracefully to it's call to some degree, where even more shamefully in the years to follow that same person might buy a console for yourself with the excuse that they were buying it for the kids, and therefore become a console junkie almost without their consent.

Oh yeah, that's what is known as upgrading in the console world, that the PS has numbers at the end of them now because of upgrades. I suppose the last console I had was the first Sega which had the Sonic game with it.

ravinhood -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/31/2006 11:58:18 AM)

It's not so much the upgrading, it's the AMOUNT of upgrading. Just imagine if the PC only upgraded every four to five years vs every year or every other year because they made something just a wee bit faster or a wee bit better looking. I'd certainly be happier if PC's only required upgrading every 4-5 years. Also, several of the consoles are going to be "backwards" compatible at least with their last entry. Then look at how many of us have to search for emulators, Dosboxes, run dual boot systems, etc. etc. to get an older game on a PC (some only a few years old) to work correctly. I wanna play "Magic the Gathering: Duel of the Planeswalker" on my pc I use now. But, it won't work with modern day video cards. So, to play it I have to uninstall the new card and reinstall an old card, then uninstall it and reinstall the new card to play the more recent games. It's just totally rediculous. And that's not the only game that has issues with video cards. I even had one game tell me it wasn't compatible with my mother board processor. lol Just rediculous.

Ah, the Sega Megadrive. That was a really good console by its time. I played Sonic to death [:D]

Charles2222 -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/31/2006 2:28:33 PM)

OTOH, I have a pc that is between 2-3 years old and haven't needed a single anything other than 1GB additional RAM for one game and everything works on it. Even Star Wars Empire at War plays like a champ. I'm not caught up in what I regard as the idiocy of always thinking I have to have the latest this or that, afterall, if some super-duper game comes out that still satisfies me with the way my computer plays it, there's no reason to upgrade. In my system I have to see at least two games that are suffering badly from not having a new hardware device before I buy it. I don't think extra RAM really fits into that category, because you're not replacing something, you're adding to it.

Yes, you say that about backwards compatibility, but you also acknowledge that's largely a new mindset, which, btw, could be dropped just as easily as it's started. If the current Wii, or what have you, is today backwards comp. and then tomorrow's isn't, it sure will make that newest one look a bit of a let down wouldn't it? I sure wouldn't count on it being a console staple, for one thing because it seems to me, just out of vague recollection mind you, that there were some pc's who made the same boast before.

Charles2222 -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (12/31/2006 2:31:11 PM)

I have the feeling that the first Sega wasn't called a megadrive. Sonic was a pretty interesting game, if for no other reason that your guy pretty much kept on living as long as he had a coin.

I think it was called "Sega Genesis" in the USA. Unless you speak of the 1985 "Sega Master System" [;)]

Yes, Genesis was the one.

Charles2222 -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (1/1/2007 12:07:21 PM)

I never played all-nighters of anything, unless it was when I was playing the AI. I have had some all-dayers quite a few years back with one friend I had when we played more than one full campaign of Panzer Strike. I think the tendency is that the more people you have around you, the more likely it will be that the game isn't serious, especially if there's more than one of them actually playing it with you. By serious I mean that there's no play that is unstoppable or that at least one of the teams can't easily run up 100 pts.

gadfly71 -> RE: Why not Wii matrix? (1/2/2007 7:17:56 AM)

I just got my new Wii and we've had a blast with the sports.
Like you said though Zelda aint so great but fun anyway.
I hope and I bet that the controllers will get better and better.
