Big B -> Major oversight? (1/1/2007 6:02:07 PM)

This may well be a very OLD question, but I wanted to ask it..

In doing the final revision for my mod, I noticed that "Float Fighters" not only have extremely limited mission choices - they cannot even appearantly drop the bombs they carry (no airfield attack, no land attack, no naval attack ...etc).

The fact is that they do not get the mission choices that any regular fighter or fighter-bomber gets.

Does anyone know why this is - or why it should be so?

I think it should be addressed in the next patch - unless there is some unfathomable answer as to why they alone are so limited.

While we were discussing possible changes for Big B's mod. I suggested that he make the PETE a Float Fighter instead of a generic Float Plane due to it's history of being used for limited CAP. However by changing it to a float fighter it loses all abiltiy to conduct any strike or asw missions. The Pete is not going to be a war winner by any stretch of the imagination by it would add a little incentive to keep it around instead of swapping it out for Alfs or Daves etc. The Rufe should have same mission capability as other fighters, not the limited choice offered. Looking forward to the new mod Big B. See you at Clark.

If you changed the Seagulls to FFs as well...

That would be amusing, little CAP battles between Petes and Seagulls...

Never heard of a Seagull flying CAP.  Now, it would be interesting to allow Dauntlesses to fly CAP.  That did happen, at least early in the war.....

Oh yeah, the SBD was a su-poib fighter... Just check Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault![:D][:D][:D]

Well, the real question I am raising is - the games current only Float Fighter is the RUFE.

And as far as I know - it(or any other FF) is incapable of using the ordinance the game gives it ... unless fighters automatically drop their bombs when they strafe at 100 feet - and if they do, I was unaware of that.

Don't think they do. The same thing applies to jet fighters; they can't do it either...

Makes not much sense either (unless the jets were not ever used in a role other than air superiority...at that time - could be).

But I would think Rufe's were used as (substitute) regular fighters...

Yes, they were. There are references (by the Allies) to planes that looked like Zeros with floats used as fighters. They weren't very successful, but then, the only pilots that talked about it were the ones that survived. [:D]

Nikademus -> RE: Major oversight? (1/2/2007 6:46:03 PM)

The Japanese regularly used Petes as makeshift CAP fighters but like you said, it was increasingly hazzardous as the war aged....but in the early days they actually didn't do half bad. Later in the war a Pete pilot in the Solomons actually managed to down a Wildcat (though the fighter boys still won the overall exchange)

Yep, from what I have been seeing PETEs were frequently used as Float Fighters (espescially earlier in the war) - and at their limited range you will never miss them as recons'.

I just see no logical reason why FF's should not have regular Fighter Mission choices...

Me neither... Same for jets...

...By all accounts, it doesn't make sense.
