1 in the commanders file it says start date with then numbers underneath what do thos e numbers represent

2 how come they are not already assigned to there armies

3 is there an ability to get rid of a general that you dont want or need

hotdog433 -> RE: commanders (1/3/2007 12:47:17 AM)

for example grant start date 51      51 what?[&:]

jimwinsor -> RE: commanders (1/3/2007 1:32:43 AM)

Start Date is the turn number, with Jan I 1861 = 0, Jan II 1861 = 1, Feb I 1861 = 2, etc...

So, for example, the Start Date of the Standard scenario is 20 (Nov I 1861).

BTW, Grant's current start date is historically off.  He should be comin' in much sooner in the forthcoming patch.

You can demote a leader.  There's an icon at the bottom of the screen if you want to demote him.  As far as getting rid of as in dismissing, I don't think that's possible.  You could either attach him to a brigade and charge like mad hoping he dies, or do what I do and stick him in a fort.  I believe any commander gives you a defensive bonus in a siege so I stick the bad ones in forts (or cities).
