Mine, just because it was a silly looking thing (combat wise, it was a peice of junk), it the Russian T-35. This is the one that had two secondary turrets with 45mm guns and one main turret with 76mm gun.

well....the only WWII tank I have experience with is a Hetzer, and I hated that thing, so none.

Without a doubt, the Sherman Flame Tank as used in the Pacific Theater:

Hello...

On TV, once saw an M-5 Light Tank (Stuart), try to jump 17 automobiles. The driver gunned it, it zipped along at a goodly clip, hit the ramp, flew off and nose dove directly into the first car. Kind of funny. Made it over all 17 cars, though. Flattened them all.

I like the American M-3, M-5 Light Tank.

Bye...

While not technically a tank, I love the JagdPanther. Beautiful vehicle.

For tanks, it would have to be a T-34/Panther tie.

Since the question was not about the "best", but rather our favorite, like Jess Housley, I favor the basic M4.............[8D]

Big B -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/7/2007 3:26:10 AM)

Oh beyond doubt the Medium M-3 lee

Fav is PzIIIJ. Probably the most underrated tank of WWII.

King Tiger

Too heavy, too slow, to unreliable. But a good looking tank [:D]

My take is on the "Sherman Firefly"

This is in the UK OOB. I didn't even know it existed. A Sherman with a 17 pdr gun? And I thought that only the Germans made so many different mods to vehicle chassis. From what I can tell, the Sherman chassis was used for a bewildering number of vehicles.

Sounds like the basis for a trivia question -- what single vehicle chassis in WWII was most used to create new vehicles?

KG Erwin -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/8/2007 1:31:45 AM)

I did some checking, and it seems that maybe the German Pz IV chassis was most used as the basis for other vehicles. Production figures are below:

Panzer IV Pre-war: 211.

1939 1940 1941 1942 1943 1944 1945 Total
Pz IV A-F/1 45 268 467 124 - - - 904
Pz IV F/2-J - - - 870 3,013 3,126 385 7,394
StuG IV - - - - 30 1,006 105 1,141
Jagdpanzer IV - - - - - 769 - 769
Jagdpanzer IV/70 - - - - - 767 441 1,208
Sturmpanzer IV - - - - 66 215 17 298
Hornisse - - - - 345 133 16 494
Hummel - - - - 368 289 57 714
Möbelwagen - - - - - 205 35 240
Wirbelwind - - - - - 100 6 106
Ostwind - - - - - 15 28 43

I can't find any comparable figures for the use of the Sherman chassis, but I believe that for the Allies, it was the most used to create other vehicles.

None of this is surprising, and it perhaps confirms what were considered "the workhorses" for the Allies and the Germans. The Sherman and the Pz IV.

morvwilson -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/8/2007 1:42:31 AM)

you may also want to check into the Kristie tank chasis. This was the starting point for both the
Russian BT series and T-34

Aren't you just thinking about the "Christie" suspension? There was no Kristie chassis AFAIK. But I don't know much.

The M18 Hellcat is my favorite tank. I guess the speed and firepower combined with the sheer insanity of the design always piqued my interest. I bet it could have made it over a car or two!

freeboy -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/8/2007 2:36:53 AM)

I really like the "ugly beast" the origonal Tiger.. and the t34-85.. two very influential members of history

JudgeDredd -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/8/2007 3:55:01 PM)

My favourite, by far, is the Tiger.

I never really liked the KonigsTiger, but the original, contrary to the above posters thoughts, was beautiful...always has been and always will be my fav.

Has to be the Goliath remote controlled demolition tank.
Somehow the project never got cancelled in the pre production stage.

hank -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/9/2007 8:30:56 PM)

I have to second the Jagdepanther ... and I also second the Tiger Ie.  The Tiger I was ugly but gosh was it the baddest beast on the field for a good part of the war.

There was another thread (here I think) about what "gun" would you most like to fire from WWII.  My choice was the 88 dual purpose flak.  That was such an awesome weapon ... and well advanced for its time.

anarchyintheuk -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/9/2007 10:28:39 PM)

My two cents. Panther = sexy.

undercovergeek -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/10/2007 1:38:59 AM)

ill go with dredd - Tiger. Great big ass looking man-tank, looks almost indestructable, and was so strong - my fave tank in any game

A list of US variants on the Sherman. There were obviously other Allied variants.

I believe the M4 would probably be your answer to that trivia question.

Marauders -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/14/2007 10:16:46 AM)

My favorite?  The Panther.

The Sherman Firefly with 17pdr gun was a good allied tank, but I often wondered why the United States could not build a better tank in 1944 and 1945. That cost many tank crews their lives.

The overall best? The T34-85

I wonder how well the Daimler-Benz VK 3002 (Panther contender) would have done. It had advantages of the Panther and T34.

gunny -> RE: What is your favorite WWII tank? (1/14/2007 11:12:01 AM)

The M24 Chaffee -- arguably the best light tank of World War II -- was a fast light armoured vehicle with the ability to deliver relatively large caliber direct fire with the excellent 75 mm M6 gun. More than 4.000 produced by Cadillac and Massey-Harris during 1943-45.
